Mailman School of Public Health – Department of Socio-medical Sciences

Master of Business Administration/Master of Public Health Dual Degree

The Mailman School of Public Health Department of Socio-medical Sciences offers dual degree options co-supported by ten schools throughout Columbia University, all designed to foster a multidisciplinary approach to public health. The Master of Business Administration/Master of Public Health Dual Degree (MBA/MPH) dual degree provides students in the accelerated MPH program with an opportunity to gain knowledge, skills, and perspectives in fields outside of public health. Once accepted into the programs, dual-degree students can begin their coursework, however it is recommended that students begin at the partner school. Dual-degree students are required to take 39 public health credits. Most of these students will complete the majority of their program in their first year of residence at the Mailman School and complete some requirements in their second year (when students are in residence at the business school). Coursework for the MBA includes management, finance, accounting, marketing, strategic planning and international business with the skills to enter leadership careers in public health setting. Graduates of the program are prepared to deal with the complex challenges in healthcare from a business perspective to provide solutions to benefit individuals and communities.

Master of International Affairs and Master of Public Health

The joint Master of International Affairs and Master of Public Health (MIA/MPH) at Columbia offers students the opportunity to prepare for careers as public affairs professionals. Students learn to handle the complex issues influencing local and national level policies and projects with the analytical and managerial skill required to apply their knowledge to real world scenarios. Faculty and students of the MPA program come from around the world and international students make up more than 50 percent of the student population. To meet the MPA student’s career interests, curriculum relies on the international resources of Columbia and the Global Public Policy Network to address a wide variety of local and national level policy issues. Dual-degree students are required to take 39 public health credits and will complete the majority of their program in their first year of residence at the Mailman School.

Master of Public Administration/Master of Public Health

The Master of Public Administration/Master of Public Health (MPA/MPH) is offered in conjunction with the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) and the Mailman School of Public Health. The MPA curriculum develops professionals who fully understand the complex trans-national issues of how to manage within organizations. The 75-credit program includes 36 credits at SIPA and 39 Public Health credits (32 of which must be completed while in residence at Public Health). Curriculum for the MPA program provides students with analytical and management skills required to become a leader in public affairs. The curriculum includes organizational leadership and management, health policy, and public health and health systems. It provides students with the management skills of a business school education, but does so in a context that emphasizes the unique nature of the healthcare system.

Juris Doctor/Master of Public Health

Columbia fosters a multi-faceted approach to public health through dual-degree masters programs, offered with other Columbia graduate schools. The Juris Doctor/Master of Public Health (JD/MPH) program provides Columbia students with an opportunity to gain the knowledge, skill, and perspective in fields outside of public health. Students in the JD/MPH program learn to advocate and create public health program and policies while developing an expertise in public health related legal issues. The dual degree program in law and public health prepares students in the overlapping fields of law, public health, policy, and ethics. The JD/MPH program prepares students as advocates for public health departments, organizations, individuals, and communities. Because law and public health are broad disciplines, graduates have the opportunity to pursue a diversity of career paths. Master of Science in Nursing/Master of Public Health

The Master of Science in Nursing /Master of Public Health (MS/MPH) dual degree program combines a master’s level nurses education with public health training to prepare nurses for a diverse range of careers in nursing and public health. An RN with an MS and an MPH degree can work as a public health nurse or senior-level administrator of a community health or public health organization. Students earn both degrees in less time and at less cost than if you pursued each degree separately. The MS/MPH degree allows nurses to advances their competence by extending and deepening knowledge within the field of public health to manage and negotiate healthcare delivery systems, provide culturally sensitive care, cultivate the nurse/patient relationship.

Master of Science in Social Work/Master of Public Health

Student at Columbia can earn a dual Master of Science in Social Work and the Master of Public Health at the Mailman School of Public Health. By completing 84-90 credit hours (with at least 45 credits in social work) the student must enroll at each school for three terms. (Mailman students generally complete a practicum in summer the semester.) Students can additionally choose a public health concentration that is compatible with their specific career goals. Concentrations include general public health, epidemiology, health policy and management, population and family health, and socio-medical sciences. All students are required to take all required public health core courses. Graduates of the program are prepared for careers in the nonprofit, government and corporate sectors. Other graduates choose careers as individual and family counseling.

The Masters of Healthcare Administration and Master of Public Health

The Department of Health Policy and Management offers a dual MHA and MPH in conjunction with the Mailman School of Public Health. The goal of this program is to provide students with the management skills of a business school education, but in a context that emphasizes the unique nature of the healthcare system. The dual MHA/MPH provides working healthcare professionals with the skills, networks, and qualifications required for careers in top-level management or policy positions. The curriculum provides expertise in the political, legal, and economic forces shaping current healthcare systems, core principles of public health, and a core understand of the principles and practices of effective management.

The Medical Center

Master of Science in Occupational Therapy/Master of Public Health

The MSOT/MPH program prepares students to:

  • Contribute to health policy
  • Apply specialized knowledge data base management and epidemiological aspects of abnormal development to leadership positions as community program planners, client advocates, and participants in health care decision-making.
  • The dual masters program is designed to provide OT students with the skills to transfer their clinical skills to administrative duties and policy development. Graduates of this program are prepared to work in a variety of settings including schools, corporations, and national, state, and local agencies concerned with health policies and healthcare practice. Students in the dual degree program take courses in occupational therapy and in public health.
