Columbia Business School

Founded in 1916, the Columbia Business School (CBS) was established to provide business training and professional preparation for undergraduate and graduate Columbia University students. It is one of six Ivy League business schools, and its admission process is among the most selective of top business schools. The Columbia Business School supports the following departments and concentrations: accounting, consulting, economics, entrepreneurship, finance, general management, health care administration, human resources management, international business, leadership, marketing, not-for-profit management, production/operations management, portfolio management, real estate, and quantitative analysis/statistics and operations research. Upon graduation, 75.7 percent of graduates (from the full-time program) become employed immediately. At the Business School students can pursue a full-time MBA, executive MBA, Ph.D. and Master of Science in marketing, financial economics or leadership. Students have the opportunity to participate in more than 100 graduate organizations. Columbia Business School was ranked as the 7th Best Business School in the country by Forbes.

Master of Business Administration in Healthcare and Pharmaceutical Management

The Master of Business Administration (MBA) program uses a cohort system where groups of about 65 students complete all first-year classes together. This design us meant to foster a sense of community among the students. Students in this program come from 61 countries and speak more than 50 languages. The core curriculum represents about 40 percent of the degree requirements with program specific courses consisting of 2 full courses and 12 half-term courses including corporate finance, financial accounting, managerial statistics, managerial economics, leadership, operations management and marketing strategy. Students complete the core curriculum during the first year and the second year provides students with the opportunity to choose from the more than 130 elective courses available at the School. Students can also supplement their education with more than 4,000 graduate-level classes from the University’s other graduate and professional schools. Many students in this program choose to focus on a particular area in order to gain deeper knowledge in a specific discipline. For example, Healthcare and Pharmaceutical Management Courses in the Healthcare and Pharmaceutical Management Program (housed within the Columbia Business School) are taught by faculty experts and seasoned practitioners from the healthcare industry, and include classes such as Strategy and Competition in Pharmaceuticals and Biotechnology, Healthcare Industry in the 21st Century, and Healthcare Investment and Deal making.

The College of Dental Medicine

Established in 1916, Columbia University’s College of Dental Medicine has been known for most of its existence as the School of Dental and Oral Surgery. The College of Dental Medicine is located on the campus of the Columbia University Medical Center/New York Presbyterian Hospital. Students pursuing degrees at this college have the opportunity to participate in dual degree programs including: Dual DDS-PhD program in Bioinformatics, a DDS/MPH program in conjunction with the Mailman School of Public Health, a DDS/MBA program affiliated with the Graduate School of Business, and a DDS/MA or MEd program in conjunction with Teachers College. The mission, as stated by the College of Dental Medicine, is a “commitment to education, patient care, and research to train general dentists, dental specialists, and future dental faculty in a setting emphasizing a close link to medical sciences and comprehensive dental care delivery in an environment stimulating professional growth.”

Doctor of Dental Surgery and Master of Public Health Dual Degree

Columbia University offers students the ability to earn a dual Doctor of Dental Surgery and Master of Public Health (DDS/MPH) degree. The goal of the DDS/MPH program is to combine curriculum in the practice of dentistry and public health to identify and solve community health problems in oral health. The College of Dental Medicine and the School of Public Health jointly offer the program and both degrees can be completed in five years. DDS/MPH degree candidates may choose among a number of public health concentrations including: epidemiology, biostatistics, health administration, and the socio-medical sciences. For admission to the program, students must submit an application to the College of Dental Medicine (CDM), then must apply and gain acceptance to the Mailman School of Public Health. Students may enter the program during the first 2 years of dental school and have up to two years after graduation from CDM to complete the requirements for the 39-credit MPH degree. Students graduating from the DDS/MPH program are prepared for careers in leadership roles at the crossroads of dentistry, medicine, and the health care system. Career options include careers in administrative posts, public health service, general practice residencies, specialty residencies, and private practice.

The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at the College of Physicians and Surgeons

The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences is one of the oldest and most distinguished graduate schools in the country. In 1979, the Faculties of Political Science, Philosophy, and Pure Science officially merged as the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS). The graduate school trains students in the humanities, natural sciences, social sciences, and grants doctoral degrees for all divisions of Columbia University. GSAS partners with some of New York’s esteemed research and cultural institutions to enhance educational programs. By using industries centered in the city, students are provided with many opportunities to develop academically and professionally. Master of Biomedical Informatics

The goals set forth by this program (as stated by the University) are:

  • Teaching fundamentals of biomedical informatics via course work to enable students to gain proficiency in defined areas including physiology, computer science, biostatistics, experimental design, and evaluation methodology related to medical informatics
  • Providing a structured research experience including developing a research proposal, execution of the research project, evaluation of the outcome of the project, and the preparation of written documents describing the project’s accomplishments
  • Provide students ability to learn necessary domain knowledge and communication skills to conduct collaborative research with faculty in clinical and basic medical science departments
  • Assist students in implementing innovative solutions to real-world problems, by testing explicit hypotheses about the effectiveness and utility of information systems in medical care, research, or teaching.

The master’s program provides students the skills and knowledge to enter academic careers as researchers and teachers or professional careers in biomedical research and health-care information processing. The curriculum underlying the program combines coursework in public health, computer science and biostatistics, as well as core courses in biomedical informatics allowing an integrated approach to allow practical application. The Master of Biomedical Informatics program can be completed in two to four years, depending on whether it is on a full or part-time basis.
