Wright State University

The Boonshft School of Medicine

Wright State University is a public coed university located in Fairborn Ohio (near Wright-Patterson Air Force Base). It originated as a branch campus of Ohio State University and Miami University but became independent in 1967. The university is named in honor of the Wright Brothers, aviation pioneers, who were residents in the local area. Currently, there are nearly 17,000 students enrolled on two campuses and the university offers more than 100 undergraduate and 76 masters, doctoral and professional degree programs through eight colleges and three schools, including the Boonshoft School of Medicine.   • Residency training in 13 medical specialties and Fellowship training in 10 subspecialties for about 445 resident physicians and fellows

Master of Public Health

The Master of Public Health program provides a core curriculum in community health/preventive medicine to educate students in the fundamentals of public health. Students in the MPH are required to complete five core courses in the program including Biostatistics for Health Professionals, Public Health Epidemiology, Environmental Health Social and Behavioral Determinants of Health and Health Resource Management and Policy. The MPH program offers four concentration areas of study Emergency Preparedness, Global Health, Health Promotion and Education, and Public Health Management. Students admitted to the program will select one concentration area and complete the specified courses in that area. Each concentration requires a minimum of 18 credit hours of study.

Master of Public Health in Emergency Preparedness

The emergency preparedness concentration highlights the interface between public health and emergency medicine, bioterrorism, politics, and organizational needs to understand and prepare for disasters and associated potential mass casualties. Required courses for the concentration include the following (3 credit) courses: Principles of Emergency Management, Public Health Crisis and Consequence Management Techniques, and Public Health Terrorism Preparedness. Students of the Concentration will have the following competencies:

  • Demonstrate a core understanding of model leadership in emergency conditions
  • Communicate and manage information as it relates to an emergency
  • Show a mastery of use of principles of crisis and risk management
  • Utilize research and evaluation science methods and instruments to collect, analyze and interpret quantitative and qualitative data
  • Employ ethical principles in practicing public health emergency preparedness
  • Show an understanding of the protection of worker health and safety

Master of Public Health in Global Health

The Global Health Concentration allows students to gain the skills required to promote health, safety and well being at local and global levels, while helping to eliminate health and social disparities worldwide. Students enrolled in the concentration are prepared to enter careers in roles as local or global leaders in interdisciplinary settings. Required courses include Global Health and Global Health Systems. Competencies for the Global Health Concentration include the knowledge and skills required to:

  • Identify strategies that will strengthen community capabilities for overcoming barriers to health and well-being
  • Exhibit interpersonal skills demonstrating a willingness to collaborate, trust building abilities, and respect for other perspectives
  • Identify and react with integrity and professionalism to ethical issues in diverse economic, political, and cultural contexts
  • Apply the health equity and social justice framework for the analysis of strategies to address health disparities across different populations
  • Conduct research that is related to global health
  • Enhancement of cultural and political awareness
  • Apply systems thinking in analyzing a diverse range of complex and interrelated factors that shape health at local, national, and international levels

Master of Public Health in Health Promotion and Education

The health promotion and education concentration allows students to develop advanced skills in community needs assessment, program planning, program implementation, program evaluation, and health promotion advocacy. Students will gain depth of knowledge in the determinants of health behavior, theories of social and behavioral change, the interdisciplinary nature of common health issues, and current health promotion and behavioral interventions. Coursework for the health promotion and education concentration are offered in conjunction with The College of Education and Human Services, The Boonshoft School of Medicine, The College of Liberal Arts and The School of Professional Psychology. Competencies for the concentration include the following abilities:

  • Assessing the needs, assets and capacity for health education
  • Planning health education programs
  • Implementing health education
  • Conducting evaluation and research that are related to health education
  • Managing health education program
  • Serving as a health education resource person
  • Communicate and advocate for health and health education

Master of Public Health in Public Health Management Concentration

The concentration in public health management provides a curriculum to understand the issues that will affect management and administration in applied public health and associated work settings. Coursework for the concentration provides competencies in strategy, leadership, personnel, finance, health-related systems and human resources. The Public Health management concentration is offered in conjunction with the Boonshoft School of Medicine, the Raj Soin College of Business and the College of Liberal Arts. Competencies for the concentration includes:

  • Strategy and management principles related to public health and health care setting
  • Apply communication and group dynamic strategies to individual and group interaction
  • Effective communication strategies used by health service organizations
  • Understand of organizational theory to enhance organizational effectiveness

Medical Doctor/Master of Public Health

The Medical Doctor/Master of Public Health (MD/MPH) dual degree program allows students learn medicine from a broader perspective than just a single patient. Focus for the dual program is on how the health of a population affects the health of individuals. Coursework investigates methods to reduce health disparities and increasing health equity through prevention, education and policy. Dual training in clinical medicine and public health offers training in medicine while combining clinical knowledge and skills to take care of individual patients. The public health training has allows students to think more broadly and critically about the population-level of health and disease and its impact at the patient level. The MD/MPH offers students a unique perspective into the intersection between public health and clinical medicine. Students apply to the program during their first year of medical school and applicants are not required to take the GRE.

Master of Business Administration in Healthcare Management

The Master of Business Administration (MBA) curriculum is comprised of the following:

  • Thirteen and a half credits of foundation courses including Survey of Financial Accounting, Survey of Economics, Survey of Finance, Survey of Business Law and Survey of Quantitative Business Analysis
  • Twenty-one credits of Core Business Coursework
  • Nine credits of a concentration
  • Capstone Class

There is no thesis required for the MBA program. For flexibility in learning the program is available in a part time evening, weekend and online formats. The weekend MBA program is available at the Dayton Main Campus, Mason Courseview Campus, and the Celina Lake Campus. Weekend courses are offered every other weekend on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings. The Raj Soin College of Business and the Boonshoft School of Medicine offer MBA students the opportunity to pursue a concentration in Healthcare Management. Concentration coursework studies health-specific advanced business concepts, evaluation techniques and strategic thinking so they can lead effectively, improve quality, increase productivity and better manage organizational costs.

Youngstown University

The Consortium of Eastern Ohio

Founded in 1908, Youngstown State University is a public coed university located in Rootstown Ohio. Current enrollment is 11,348 students located on the 175-acre main campus. Undergraduate students can choose from more than 100 majors and the university offers a wide variety of graduate programs through the Business School, Education School and Department of Nursing and Physical Therapy. In 2016, US News and World Reports ranked Youngstown State University as Tier 2 for best Midwest Regional Universities. There are more than 140 student organizations including fraternities and sororities to choose from. There are strong athletics for both male and female athletes including a NCAA Division 1 Football team, eight men’s and 10’s women’s varsity sports and Four national football championships and 27 other conference titles since 1995. The Consortium of Eastern Ohio Master is a multidisciplinary, interdepartmental program providing opportunities for graduate studies in public health. It is housed in the Bitonte College of Health and Human Services.

Master of Public Health

The Master of Public Health (MPH) program is a consortium program between the University of Akron, Cleveland State University, Northeastern Ohio Medical University, Ohio University, and Youngstown State University. The mission of the Consortium is “providing an accredited public health education designed for the working professional”. This MPH program is nontraditional and specifically geared toward working professionals and students to broaden their role in improving community health in the continually changing health care environment. Curriculum for the program provides a core foundation in public health including analytic skills, research strategies, community assessment methods, program implementation, evaluation and policy development within an ethical and culturally sensitive perspective. Students are required to complete 42 credits for graduation including:

  • Six core courses
  • Two generalist track courses
  • A capstone project
  • Designated electives

Core courses for the program are scheduled on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (alternate scheduling is considered to accommodate students with special circumstances). Students also have the option to pursue core courses at any one of the distance learning sites on the participating campuses. Electives are taken at The University of Akron, Cleveland State University, NEOMED, Ohio University, or Youngstown State University. Degrees for students enrolled at NEOMED are granted by Northeast Ohio Medical University.

Xavier University

The College of Social Sciences, Health and Education

Xavier University is a coed Jesuit Catholic University located in Cincinnati Ohio. Founded in 1831, Xavier is among the oldest Catholic universities in the country. Master of Arts in Health Care Mission Integration

The Master of Arts in Health Care mission combines the study of theology with the study of health services administration. The mission of the program is to “prepare students for careers as Mission Directors and others who lead their colleagues in Catholic and other Christian health services to foster and enhance the spirit of love, compassion, and service within these institutions”. The focus for the graduate program is providing an understanding of Christian tradition within the challenges of institutional, technological and cultural change. Students are provided a course of study with experts in the fields of theology and health care service administration. A required internship provides field experience and professional seminars (non-credit) are also required. The Master of Arts in Health Care Mission Integration requires completion of 36 including:

  • Twenty-one credits of Theology
  • Fifteen credits of Health Services Administration Courses
  • Internship In Health Care Mission
  • Internship of 100 clock hours with a Mission Director in a Catholic or Christian health care facility

Master of Health Service Administration

The Master of Health Service Administration (MSHA) curriculum provides students with a core foundation of management, financial and quantitative skills, enhancing their skills in health care management. Coursework includes epidemiology, clinical management, ethics, health policy analysis, physician relations, managed care and integrated health delivery systems, population-based planning and provider payment strategies. Students gain broad-based skills and knowledge that prepares them for careers in any area of health care management. The required residency enables them to focus on particular areas they would like to explore and develop.
The MSHA program is available in a full or part-time format, as follows:

  • The full-time program includes four semesters on campus followed by an 8-12 month administrative residency under the guidance of senior-level management (presidents, vice presidents, chief executive officers). The annual residency stipend received in 2015 by students was $44,499.
  • The part-time option accommodates the needs of working professionals. The program includes nine consecutive semesters of part-time study on campus and requires an administrative practicum experience. The practicum is generally a guided field experience conducted within your place of work.

The Master of Science in Nursing Administration (MSN) curriculum provides theoretical and practical knowledge for a foundation for advanced nursing education in a variety of roles. Core coursework focuses on critical systematic inquiry, professional and personal development, and management of information and resources in a rapidly changing health care environment. Students have the opportunity to choose a ten credit concentration area in Nursing Administration that provides an in-depth study of nursing leadership principles and practices for improving nursing practice and resolving nursing healthcare issues and problems. Courses for the concentration include the following courses: Nursing Administration in Complex Healthcare Organizations, Financial Management for Nurse Executives and Administrative Informatics. Competencies for the program include the following abilities:

  • Apply concepts of administrative practice to delivery of healthcare services
  • Assess organizational structures, cultures, leadership, and power to understand and manage organizational behaviors
  • Understanding of the complexities of finance in health care delivery

According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2012 the average mean salary for healthcare managers in the US was over $103,680 and those with graduate-level degrees earned significantly more. Most jobs as Healthcare Administrators and Managers require a minimum of a bachelor’s level degree, however, those with master’s level degrees will earn more and have higher-level management jobs.
