Ohio State University

The Graduate School

Ohio State University was founded in 1870 and is a public coed institution located in Columbus Ohio. It is the third-largest campus of any university in the United States. In addition to the main campus, the university also had regional campuses in Lima, Mansfield, Marion, Newark, and Wooster. The current enrollment is 56,000 students with a wide variety of graduate programs through the College of Education and Human Ecology, Max Fisher College of Business, College of Engineering, College of Medicine and College of Law. Master of Science in Epidemiology

Curriculum for the Master of Science in Epidemiology provides core knowledge in the principles of epidemiology with an emphasis on the application of these principles to public health research. Graduates of the MS in Epidemiology program are prepared to assume research-oriented positions in academic settings, government, or private industries. Program competencies include:

  • Ability to develop a scientific hypothesis to design an epidemiologic study assessing the validity and efficiency of the hypothesis
  • Establish competency in a substantial area of epidemiology requiring a proficient understanding of risk factors for the disease, the impact of the disease on populations, and an awareness of methodology specific to that area
  • Analyze epidemiologic data set using at least one computer-aided tool
  • Effectively communicate results of research (both orally and in writing)
  • Critically evaluate (in writing) a published epidemiologic investigation to include: Choice of study population and design, measurement of the exposure, disease, and covariates, the data description and analytic method, and interpretation of the findings of the study

Research in Epidemiology provides the basis for significant public health decisions including those involving tobacco use or HIV/AIDS, well before individual disease mechanisms are understood. Curriculum for the MS in Epidemiology requires a minimum of 48 credits for completion.

Master of Public Health

The MPH program is available in a traditional weekday format in a flexible part-time format. Coursework for the program addresses ways to prevent disease and injury as well as the physical, mental, social, environmental, and global health concerns of communities and populations who are at risk for disease and injury. The MPH curriculum includes the following core courses in the broad disciplines of public health: Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Environmental Health Science, Health Policy and Management, Public Health Practice, and Social and Behavioral Sciences. The MPH consists of a minimum of 45-48 credits and includes coursework in knowledge basic to public health, courses that are required for a concentration. The Culminating Project allows students to apply, integrate, and synthesize knowledge and experience obtained during their studies to problems relevant to public health. Students can choose from one of the following concentrations:

MPH Specialization in Epidemiology

The specialization in Epidemiology provides students with a broad-based training in public health and epidemiology. The curriculum focuses on patterns of disease, disability, and injury and means to control health problems. The coursework prepares students by giving them the skills required to measure the exposure-disease relationship in humans and means to alter risk through intervention. Research in Epidemiology helps provide a basis for significant public health decisions before individual disease mechanisms are understood. The program requires a minimum of 48 credits including the following:

  • 16 Credits of Core Public health coursework
  • 19 to 22 Credits of Concentration courses in Epidemiology
  • 5-8 Credits of Electives
  • 2 Credit Practicum
  • 3 Credit Culminating Project

MPH specialization in Clinical Translational Science

The specialization in Clinical Translational Science is designed for those clinicians desiring an advanced degree in the methods applicable for research in applied clinical settings. The program emphasizes the use of the tools of biostatistics and epidemiology combined with law and ethics. The clinical translational science curriculum provides training in many areas of epidemiology and biostatistics, allowing students to become prepared for the quantitative demands of those fields. The specialization in clinical translational science is limited to students with a clinical related doctorate (e.g., MD, DO, DDS, DVM, PharmD) or those enrolled in a combined degree program for that degree along with the MPH.

MPH Specialization in Biomedical Informatics
Biomedical Informatics studies the use of information and information technology to improve individual health, health care, public health, and biomedical research. An educated workforce of biomedical informatics professionals will be able to address and handle the generation, collection, management, integration, analysis, and dissemination of various types and volumes of data.

MPH Specialization in Biostatistics
The specialization in Biostatistics provides students with the knowledge and skills to plan and evaluate study designs, to implement appropriate statistical methods for data analysis, and to draw conclusions from analytical results. Competencies for graduates of the Biostatistics Specialization include:

  • Ability to analyze data from observational studies, clinical trials, epidemiological studies, medical surveys, and evaluations of healthcare programs through the use of statistical programming software
  • Identify potential sources of bias and confounding in design study, and develop analytic and design strategies minimizing the effects
  • Interpret and communicate results and limitations of statistical analyses of public health data in technical and nontechnical terms

MPH Specialization in Health Behavior and Health Promotion
The goal of Health Behavior and Health Promotion is to empower people to increase control and improve their health. Health promotion attempts to develop the ability of communities, organizations, and individuals to establish conditions where people can be healthy. Graduates of the Health Behavior and Health Promotion program will have the skills and knowledge needed to work with organizations in developing programs, policies, and environments to improve health.

MPH Specialization in Environmental Health Sciences
Curriculum for Environmental Health Sciences Specialization focuses on the chemical, physical, and biological agents in the environment affecting human health. The program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to enter careers as practitioners of public health. Course work for the specialization combines a practicum and culminating experience providing students with the knowledge, experience, and skill to work in a wide range of public and private organizations as environmental health specialists.

MPH Specialization in Health Services Management and Policy
The mission of the Division of Health Services Management and Policy (HSMP) is “conducting high-quality research, education, and service activities to improve the organization, financing, and delivery of Healthcare”. The curriculum in this specialization provides students with a core understanding of the factors that affect health formation of healthcare policy, quality of care, patient safety, financial stability of healthcare systems, the role of health technology, and methods to improve delivery of care. The specialization in Health Service Management and Policy is designed for students seeking careers dealing with healthcare policy and community-based approaches to health care improvement.

MPH Specialization in Veterinary Public Health
There is an increasing societal need for public health professionals to address the increase in infectious diseases that are transmissible from animals to humans, food safety and food security, emergency response and preparedness, as well as animal health and biomedical research. With the collaboration of the Colleges of Public Health and Veterinary Medicine, the specialization in Veterinary Public Health prepares students to pursue a DVM or other professional degree with a broader background and expanded knowledge base in the health sciences prior to entering the DVM, MD or nursing programs.

The College of Nursing

The Ohio State University College of Nursing was founded in 1914 as the Homeopathic Hospital Training Program for Nursing, culminating in a three-year diploma. The school offered the first five-year nursing program in 1930 and a four-year program was established in 1941 leading to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. The School of Nursing became an independent school in 1984 and still upholds the mission (as stated by the school of nursing) to “transform healthcare to promote the wellness in individuals and diverse populations throughout the world through innovative and transformational education, research and evidence-based clinical practice.”

Master of Science in Nursing Essential Skills

The curriculum in the MSN and Health Systems Management degree program prepares graduates for a variety of challenging career opportunities in today’s healthcare workforce within hospitals, clinics, public health departments, and other community-based settings. Coursework, field experience, and research provides the knowledge, values, and skills necessary for certification by the American Nurses’ Credentialing Center (ANCC) in the area of advanced practice Nursing Administration. Master of Public Health in Health Behavior and Health Promotion/Master of Science in Nursing

The increasing complexity of public health and delivery of health services has increased the need for a program that combines a graduate degree in public health with a graduate degree in Nursing. The School of Public Health, in conjunction with the School of Nursing, provides students with the opportunity to pursue a dual Masters Degree in Public health and Nursing. The dual degree program allows students to earn both degrees in a shorter amount of time than they would independently (some required coursework can be shared). Students must be admitted to each program separately.

The Master of Science in Nursing in Health Systems Management

The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) in Health Systems Management nursing prepares students with a curriculum that is evidence-based with a focus on Health System management and administration. Graduates of the MSN in health systems management are prepared to enter careers of leadership in a variety of healthcare settings including hospitals, ambulatory care organizations, and long-term care facilities. Competencies for the MSN in Health Systems Management include the following abilities:

Located in Columbus Ohio, The Moritz College of Law at Ohio State University is a public coed law school and a charter member of the Association of American Law Schools. The Law School has over 10,000 alumni nationally and graduates include justices of the Supreme Court of Ohio, federal appeals and district court judges, U.S. senators, U.S. representatives, governors, managing partners in law firms of all sizes, chief executive officers of Fortune 500 corporations, and professors at law schools across the country, and prominent attorneys. Master of Health Administration/Juris Doctor

Managing public health and health care services is a huge and dynamic force today. Healthcare expenditures account for a high portion of the gross domestic product and it is only expected to continue to grow with the aging population and as new technologies are developed. This industry presents tremendous challenges to management and the law. Ohio State offers a joint-degree program leading to a Juris Doctor and a Master’s Degree in Health Administration (MHA). Graduates of the joint-degree program will be amply prepared to enter careers as lawyers in law firms, employment as counsel to health care organizations, management of health care delivery, and policy-related positions in the public and private sectors. Joint degree candidates pursuing the JD/ MHA are required to complete 76 credits of coursework at the Moritz College of Law and 49 credits of coursework at the College of Public Health. If taken separately, students would be required 88 credits of law course work, and MHA students would require 60 credits at the College of Public Health. Moritz accepts 12 hours of MHA course work and the College of Public Health accepts 10 credits of legal course work, allowing students to complete the JD/MHA dual degree program in four years (instead of five).

Master of Public Health/Juris Doctor

In collaboration with the School of Public Health and the Moritz College of the Law – Ohio State offers a Master of Public Health (MPH) and Juris Doctor (JD) dual degree program. Graduates of the dual degree program are prepared for careers in positions in law firms, counsel to healthcare organizations, management of health care delivery, and policy-related positions in both the public and the private sectors. Dual degree students are required to complete a total of 76 credits of course work at the Moritz College of Law with an additional 38 credits hours of Public Health Courses at the College of Public Health. Moritz accepts 12 hours of MPH courses and the College of Public Health accepts 10 credits of law courses allowing students to complete the dual degree in four years (otherwise would be five years). Dual degree students may complete their first year of study at the law school or the College of Public Health. During the second year of study, students will complete requirements for the other degree-granting program. During the third and fourth years of study, students may take courses from both programs.

Juris Doctor/Master of Arts in Public Policy

The dual degree Juris Doctor (JD) and Master of Arts (MA) in Public Policy program at Ohio State University is offered in conjunction with the Moritz College of Law and the Glenn School of Public Affairs. The curriculum for the JD and MA in Public Policy provides a course of study in public policy and law as well as a core foundation for students aspiring to enter careers in public service. Students will gain the skills and knowledge to analyze complex social and regulatory problems, design effective solutions to these problems, work as advocates in a variety of settings using knowledge of the law in creating, implementing and enforcing government policies. Graduates of the JD/MA enter careers in government agencies, nonprofit organizations, advocacy, and lobbying positions, as well as in the private sector. This is the only joint-degree program that can be completed in three years (including one summer). The dual JD/MA program requires 76 credits of coursework at the Moritz College of Law and 28 credits of courses at the Glenn School. Students enrolled in the dual degree program may apply 12 credits earned at the Glenn School toward their law degree and 8 credits earned at Moritz toward their MA degree. Students must complete their first year at the Moritz College of Law – the second and third years are spent in a combination of classes at the law school and the Glenn School. Joint-degree candidates must take Administrative Law at the Moritz College of Law during their second or third years of law school.
