The Graduate School of Public Health

Bowling Green State University (BGSU) and the University of Toledo (UT) collectively support the Northwest Ohio Consortium Master of Public Health (MPH) degree program. Neither university is authorized to offer the degree independently, however, students are admitted to both universities. Students must apply, register, and pay for classes through the University of Toledo and they share the information with Bowling Green University. Students must attend classes at both universities and MPH graduates receive diplomas listing Bowling Green University and the University of Toledo as they are signed and conferred by both university Presidents. Classes are held at:

  • The University of Toledo’s Health Science and Main Campus
  • Bowling Green State at Levis Commons and Main Campus
  • Many of the MPH courses for the program are offered online to provide additional flexibility to students.

Classes are offered in the evenings and on weekends to accommodate busy professional who needs a flexible schedule. The 45-credit MPH program can be completed in four semesters as a full-time program (four semesters).

The Master of Public Health in Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety Science

The Master of Public Health (MPH) in Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety Science (ENVH) program focuses on the scientific, regulatory and technical aspects of public health relating to the assessment and control of hazards such as physical, chemical and biological agents in non-occupational and occupational environments. The focus for the curriculum is on recognizing, evaluating and controlling human exposure that can result from contaminated air, water, soil, and food.   • Assess chemical, biological, and physical agents classified as hazardous to human health (including agents used in terrorism events)
  • Analyze and interpret statistical, epidemiological, toxicological and communicable disease information for prevention and remediation program development and implementation
  • Conduct sample collection of mediums affected or contaminated by chemical, biological, and physical agents
  • Collection and evaluation of information necessary to perform risk assessments and conduct disaster preparation/planning
  • Make decisions on the basis of recommended measures to reduce or eliminate environmental and occupational health hazards
  • Demonstration of administrative, scientific, technical, and regulatory knowledge and skills relating to their public health administration roles
  • Develop and present administrative, scientific, technical and regulatory reports

Graduates of the program are prepared to enter careers in government agencies including the Environment Protection Agency (EPA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and other Health Departments, industries, consulting firms, union organizations, and healthcare organizations.

Master of Public Health in Health Promotion and Education

The Master of Public Health in Health Promotion and Education (HPRO) curriculum arm students with the skills required to plan, implement and evaluate educational and behavioral changes and specific programs that will improve health. Competencies for graduates of the program include the ability to:

  • Implement and evaluate current health promotion and education programs
  • Show mastery of knowledge critical to roles in health promotion and education
  • Coordinate the delivery of health promotional and educational services

Study includes the factors affecting disease and disability in populations to understand the determinants of health problems by describing and analyzing the biological, environmental, social and behavioural factors affecting health, illness and premature death.   • Describe the measures of disease frequency and the association between risk factors and disease
  • Show epidemiologic research study designs and their advantages and limitations
  • Describe the major sources of bias in epidemiologic research and how to evaluate and reduce bias

Master of Public Health in Public Health Nutrition

The Master of Public Health (MPH) in Public Health Nutrition (PHN) curriculum trains students in nutrition disease prevention and health promotion to allow proficiency in planning, managing, delivering, and evaluating nutrition services and programs. Graduate of the program gain the following core competencies:

  • Identification and assessment of diet-related health problems of poor nutrition and over-nutrition in diverse populations

Medical Doctor and Master of Public Health

With an increasing need for highly skilled physicians with a comprehensive understanding and appreciation of public health issues, the dual Medical Doctor and Master of Public Health (MD/MPH) provides students and health professionals with the opportunity for formal training in public health. Curriculum for the dual program combines traditional MD preparation with a study in public health to allow a better understanding of the relationship between medicine and population-focused public health disciplines. Graduates of the program earn an MD and MPH and are prepared to enter careers as physicians in the public health field to diagnose health problems and risk factors of individuals and communities. Medical Residents and Medical Fellows have special admission requirements that take advantage of the extensive admission process to medical school.

Juris Doctor and Master of Public Health

The Juris Doctor/Master of Public Health (JD/MPH) degree program combines a law degree with a Master of Public Health to give students a comprehensive and systematic understanding of the overlapping fields of health care and public health. Coursework for the dual program allows students to utilize relevant literature, navigate within complex systems, and identify how law should apply in practice. Graduates have a JD and an MPH. The College of Law at the University of Toledo will work closely with students to accommodate interdisciplinary studies.

The Master of Business Administration and a Master of Public Health (MBA/MPH) dual degree program prepares students the ability to integrate the philosophy, function and competencies in the field of public health and business to address cost-effective health care and public health approaches. Ohio Dominican University

The Graduate School

Ohio Dominican University was founded in 1911 as the College of St. Mary of the Springs, an all women’s school. It became coeducational in 1964 and in 1968 changed its name to Ohio Dominican College. The main campus is situated on 75 acres in Columbus and current enrollment is just over 3,000 students.
