Master of Public Health
The Master of Public Health Program (MPH Program) is offered in collaboration through eight schools including the School of Medicine (where the program is housed), School of Nursing, School of Arts and Sciences, School of Veterinary Medicine, Wharton School of Business, School of Dental Medicine, and School of Social Policy and Practice. The mission of the MPH program is “providing the resources and environment of a premier research university in preparing the next generation of leaders in public health”. The curriculum for the program provides students with the training and experience to assess the health needs of populations and communities, to plan, implement and evaluate programs to address those needs, and to inform public debate and policymaking to improve conditions for healthy living locally, nationally, and globally. The MPH program prepares graduates to participate in collaborative research that translates research into public health practice. The program is flexible, allowing students to choose full-time or part-time study.
Medical Doctor /Master of Public Health Dual Degree
The Medical Doctor/ Master of Public Health (MD/MPH) dual degree program is specifically designed for Perelman medical students who want to pursue medicine with a specific focus on population or community health. The program provides students with a study of clinical practice, disease prevention, research, health education, health behavior, implementation science, and policymaking. If taken separately, completion of the two degrees takes six years, but the dual MD-MPH can be completed in five years. The curriculum for the MPH consists of 16 credits, including 10 required core courses and 6 electives. Students enroll in the MD program full time for the first three years and the complete MPH course work full time during year 4 and the fall of year 5. The final semester of the program is spent in the MD program.
MSN /Master of Public Health Dual Degree
The dual Master of Science in Nursing/Master of Public Health Dual Degree (MPH/MSN) program is designed for nurses who aspire to enter careers in the field of public health as clinical nurses. The program consists of both Master of Science in Nursing and Master of Public Health core and specialty content. The 12 credits MSN in Health Leadership provides students with an opportunity to focus their study in Health Leadership and includes six required core courses, two leadership courses, two nursing leadership courses and four leadership concentration electives (can be in any graduate program at Penn). The MSN/MPH dual degree prepares nurse leaders to pursue careers in nursing education, global and public health, health policy, and Health Care quality improvement.

Opened in 1886, the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, also known as Penn Nursing, is an undergraduate and graduate institution. Penn Nursing offers students the option to pursue traditional and accelerated programs for bachelor’s in nursing as well as from 18 master’s programs including nurse practitioner, clinical nurse specialist, certified nurse-midwife, and certified registered nurse anesthetist programs. Master of Science in Nursing in Health Care Administration
The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) in Health Care Administration provides a study of the aspects of patient care combining scientific knowledge, best practices, compassion, and advanced technology. The Nursing program at Penn leads the field of nursing and is provides students with high standards of patient care, education and clinical research with a focus on advanced practice nursing and administration. The coursework provides an emphasis on clinical decision-making and management skills, as well as methods of quality evaluation and cost of care. This program is offered in conjunction with the School of Nursing and Wharton School of Business, and the Organizational Dynamics Program at Penn for a study of nursing administration in diverse Health Care settings. Students in the program are required to complete 9.5 course units in core coursework, 4 course units of Elective Courses and a Nursing Administration Practicum.
Master of Science in Nursing in Health Leadership
The School of Nursing offers the Master of Science in Health Leadership, specifically designed for professional nurses with the vision, creativity, and intellect required to make significant changes and contributions in Health Care. Students in the program must choose 6 courses of core courses, 4 courses in theory and 2 elective courses.

Master of Business Administration in Health Care Management
Wharton offers students the option to pursue two paths of study, an MBA for full-time students and an MBA for executives. Additionally, students can pursue double majors or individualized majors. The focus of the MBA in Health Care Management includes a combination of coursework and professional development opportunities. Founded in 1888, the University of Scranton is a private coed Catholic Jesuit University that is located in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Current enrollment is 3,998 students on the 58-acre main campus. Master of Health Care Administration
The curriculum for the Master of Health Care Administration (MHA) trains students with the skills and knowledge required for entrance into management careers in the health care sector. The MHA program is offered in a full time or part-time format and is designed to do the following:
- Prepare graduates of the program for entering Health Care management and leadership positions
- Enhance the performance of individuals currently employed in Health Care management and leadership positions but requiring additional academic training
- Preparing graduates for advancement in a variety of Health Care careers
- Preparing graduates to advance in senior Health Care management positions
The program is available in a campus-based format or an online-only format for flexibility in scheduling. The MHA program requires 44 credits for completion and includes 41 core credits, 3 elective credits, and required fieldwork. An administrative residency (1,000 hours) is generally required for students with no prior applied health care management experience.
Master of Science in Health Informatics
Scranton’s online Master of Science (MS) in Health Informatics is designed for clinicians, information technologists, and business professionals working in health care, as well as those interested in entering the health informatics field to develop and maintain health information systems, software applications and databases for physicians, nurses and other professional users. The MS in Informatics degree program includes courses from the Panuska College of Professional Studies, the Kania School of Management, and the College of Arts and Sciences. Students in this program are required to complete 33 credits, including eleven, three-credit courses, with each course offered online in an eight-week format. Courses are offered in sequence in three core facets: information systems, informatics and information technology. Coursework provides graduates with a core understanding of information science, computer science, and health care with a focus on resources, devices, and methods required for acquisition, storage, retrieval, and use of information in health and biomedicine.
Medical Doctor/Master of Health Administration
The Dual Medical Doctor/Master of Health Administration (MD /MHA) degree program is offered in conjunction with the University of Scranton and the Commonwealth Medical College. Curriculum for the program (the first for the region) combines two traditionally specialized degree programs to train future physicians for careers as health care administrators and leaders in health care services. As health care requirements push organizations to react to dynamic changes in the field, the dual degree program integrates leadership and management roles in the medical and clinical environment filling the demand for delivering efficient and quality health care. The MD degree will be awarded by the Commonwealth Medical College and the MHA degree by the University of Scranton.
