Maryhurst University is a private, coed liberal arts college located in Marylhurst Oregon. The school is affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church and is located nine miles south of Portland. The Department of Public Health and Preventative Medicine – School of Public Health
Oregon Health and Science University is a public coed university with its main campus and two hospitals located in Portland Oregon. With its beginning in 1974 as the Health Sciences Center of the University of Oregon, it combined the dentistry, medicine, and nursing into one center. It was renamed Oregon Health Sciences University in 1981 as part of a merger with the Oregon Graduate Institute of Science and Technology. The university maintains partnership programs including a joint PharmD program with Oregon State in Corvallis. Master of Public Health in Epidemiology
The Master of Public Health in Epidemiology track provides students with a population perspective toward health care and disease prevention. The Biostatistics MPH focuses on developing competencies in population-based study design, analytic methods, data interpretation, and communication. Dual Medical Doctor – Master of Public Health
The Medical Doctor / Master of Public Health (MD/MPH) dual degree program is designed specifically for those students with a deep commitment to a career in a population-based clinical practice with a public health degree enhancing their career productivity in research, policy, or programs. Students in the MD/MPH program are admitted to the Epidemiology track providing them critical core concepts and methods required for careers in medicine and public health. Students are provided with ample opportunity to explore and gain expertise in public health research and through elective coursework, required field experience and the CPH Exam. Students will begin MPH studies in an intensive three-week introductory Epidemiology course before beginning medical school coursework. An MD/MPH seminar is provided in the fall of the student’s first year and with ongoing mentoring during the five years of study. Students earn 10-12 credits taking selected MPH courses during their first two years, and they have the opportunity to pursue a summer field experience in public health research or practice between the first and second years of study. This allows students in the program to become engaged with public health issues and perspectives while studying clinical medicine in order to become familiar with the faculty and research in the school. Students spend a year dedicated to graduate studies for the MPH degree after the third year, in which they complete core course requirements and most of the required field experience coursework. Summer internship projects in the past have included working with the Oregon Health Division, the Northwest Portland Indian Health Board, the CDC, and independent researchers. Several students have developed, funded, and carried out international health projects in Africa and South America.
Master of Science in Biostatistics
The Master of Science (MS) in Biostatistics program provides students with graduate training in the application and theory of biostatistics. The program is designed for students who want to pursue careers as intermediate level biostatisticians or enter doctoral programs in biostatistics and is also appropriate for students who have earned a Graduate Certificate in Biostatistics to pursue further training. Future careers include collaborative biostatistics in basic, clinical, translational or population sciences, as well as some clinical and translational researchers.
Competencies for graduates of the program include the following abilities:
- Applying bio-statistical theory and techniques in the design, planning, and management of data collection to conduct analysis for own research projects or support collaborative research
- Define broad research goals into specifications and procedures for statistical analysis and interpretation of results in basic, clinical, translational and public health research study
- Choose appropriate statistical analysis software for assessment, decision-making and information sharing
- Communicate statistical methods and findings to specialists and non-specialist audiences.
- Students are required completion of 48 credits to earn the MS degree.
Graduate Certificate in Biostatistics
The Graduate Certificate in Biostatistics program provides students with graduate-level training in biostatistics in the health sciences. The program is designed for researchers, students in other programs, and working professionals to become more skilled in applied biostatistics methods and theory. Students who are seeking acceptance into the program should have a strong aptitude for mathematics. The 30 credits Certification in Biostatistics program includes 18 credits in core coursework and 12 electives. The program is available on a part-time or full-time basis. including formal classroom sessions and hands-on statistical computing. Additionally, students have opportunities to engage in mentored collaborative health science research experiences involving ongoing projects. Competencies for the program include the following abilities:
- Perform a broad range of applied statistical procedures in basic, clinical, population and translational sciences
- Interpret and summarize analysis results in research and to communicate them to individuals with different degrees of statistical background
- Apply principles of research design in addressing problems in basic, clinical, and population sciences
