The University of Washington offers several healthcare management programs that prepare individuals for careers in this growing industry.
The Bachelor of Science in Health Informatics and Health Information Management provides students with an understanding of information management as it relates to healthcare. Students develop knowledge in healthcare and patient data systems, computer systems used in healthcare settings, protection of health records, systems analysis, quality assurance and more. The program prepares students for the Registered Health Information Administrator certification examination. Courses are offered on campus in the evenings to provide flexibility for working adults. Courses required may include Healthcare Language, Management Concepts with HIM Applications, ICD, Clinical Documentation & Revenue Management as well as Health Data Analytics.
The Master of Health Administration prepares students for careers in management, policy analysis and other leadership careers in healthcare. The program is considered one of the best in the country by US News & World Report. Students gain leadership skills and are able to gain hands-on experience through a full-time summer internship. They gain an understanding of accounting in a healthcare setting as well as the economics of healthcare. Students are provided instruction in group dynamics, management of healthcare organizations and project management. Courses required for the program may include Quantitative Methods, Organizational Behavior & Human Resource Management, Epidemiology/Critical Evidence Appraisal as well as Health Policy Development. The program ends with a capstone project with students working in teams of three or four to tackle projects submitted to the University by actual healthcare provider organizations in the Seattle area.
The Master of Health Informatics & Health Information Management provides students with an understanding of the clinical care, health services and the health of a population that is critical for developing health information. Health informatics is used in the provision, financing, and evaluation of healthcare services as well as in healthcare research. Students gain an understanding of contemporary regulatory and compliance framework, managing the collection, storage, retrieval and analysis of health information for varied purposes as well as how to manage information access in order to improve care. Courses required may include Health Information Systems & Leadership, Enterprise Systems & Electronic Health Records as well as Confidentiality, Privacy & Security of Health Information in an e-Environment. The program is available on campus.
UW also offers an Extended Master of Clinical Health Services (EMCHS) degree program for physician assistants. Most courses are taken online.
About the University of Washington
The University of Washington was founded just a few years after the Seattle and Oregon Territories separated, officially opening in 1861. Originally, it was known as the Territorial University of Washington and it struggled financially when it first opened due to low enrollment and lack of state funding.
The first graduate of the school was a woman, Clara Antoineter McCarty Witt who earned her bachelor’s degree in science. Military troops were housed on the campus during both World Wars and the funds provided from the federal government allowed the school to add both liberal arts and medical studies.

University of Washington Application Requirements
In order to apply to the Bachelor of Science in Health Informatics and Health Information Management, current University of Washington students must have completed 90 quarter credits and earned a cumulative GPA or higher in all courses taken as well as a 2.0 GPA in each prerequisite course. Prerequisite courses include statistics, human anatomy and physiology, as well as medical terminology. They must provide official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended, a statement of purpose and a current resume. Transfers from other colleges and universities must meet the same requirements.
Applicants to the Master of Health Administration must hold a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university. They must provide official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended as well as official GRE scores. They must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 as well as GRE scores of 4.0 Quantitative, 155 Verbal and 155 Analytical. One year full-time professional work in health services is preferred but not required. Applicants must submit a resume, written statements and three letters of recommendation.
In order to apply to the Master of Health Informatics & Health Information Management program, applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university, preferably in business, information technology, health informatics, health information management or another health field. They must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA and must provide official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. They must provide a current resume, written statements, and three recommendations.
The University of Washington Tuition and Financial Aid
Tuition for the Bachelor of Science in Health Informatics and Health Information Management is $418 per credit hour. Tuition for the Master of Health Administration is $821 per credit hour and for the Master of Health Informatics & Health Information Management it is $895 per credit hour.
In order to qualify for financial aid, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the form must be renewed on an annual basis. Undergraduate students may be offered grants, loans or scholarships while those that attend on campus may also be offered work-study programs. Graduate students are offered loans, assistantships or fellowships, although they may seek grants or scholarships from outside organizations.
