Health Care Management Programs at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley

University of Texas Rio Grande Valley appears in our ranking of the Top 10 Online Physician Assistant Certification Programs.

At the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, students can choose from several graduate programs in health care management. The first of those is a Master of Business Administration (MBA) with a concentration in health care administration. This online MBA program takes 12 months to complete. It includes seven-week classes and 30 credits. The health care administration core includes Health Care Accounting, Health Computer Information Systems, Human Resource Management in Health Care and Competing Through Service. Students will earn their remaining credits through the MBA core courses.

The university’s Master of Health Sciences can appeal to students too because this program offers a concentration in health care administration. Designed for those who want to work as managers and administrators, it includes courses in biology and other health sciences. Students take two sets of classes in both the fall, spring and summer semesters to graduate within 12 months of starting the program. They typically two classes during each session. Their courses include Professional Proposal Writing, Organizational Leadership and Change, Human Resource Management in Health Care and Compliance and Risk Management.

To help students who do not have the time to earn a full degree, the university offers a health care administration and leadership certificate program online. It offers seven different classes for students but only asks that they take four courses to complete 12 credit hours of work. Certificate students can take courses from some of the other programs, including Health Economics, Health Care Accounting, Health Care Policy, Organization and Financing, and Language Access and Planning in Health Care.

Also available is a Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN to BSN) program. It includes the same short classes and allows students to complete a BSN in one year because they can use the credits they earned from other schools. They’ll take core nursing classes that include Professional Mobility, Leadership in Nursing, Research, Issues in Nursing and Clinical Assessment.

Future physician assistants can choose from two programs at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. The first is a Master in Physician Assistant Studies. Students take two semesters with a full course load and do three sessions in the summer, including a clerkship. Their courses include Studies in the PA Profession, Clinical Medicine I and II, Patient Encounter and Health Policy and Health Management. The university offers this major as a bridge program too.

About the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley is a public university that belongs to the University of Texas System and operates several campuses across the region. It was established in 2012 after the University of Texas decided to close two older campuses and create a new university for local students. Before the university opened, it adopted the nickname UTRGV. There are now UTRGV campuses in Brownsville, McAllen, Rio Grande City, Edinburg, and Harlingen as well as one on South Padre Island. Nearly 90 percent of the more than 27,000 enrolled students at the university are Hispanic, which makes it one of the colleges with the largest Hispanic population in the country.

University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Accreditation Details

UTRGV students can complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) when it goes live in October or later in the year because this university has the regional accreditation that lets students use the form. That accreditation comes from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). This Texas university also has accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) for the RN to BSN program.

University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Application Requirements

The online MBA program in health care at UTRGV asks that students complete the online application and submit their electronic transcripts. Students do not need to submit their transcripts if they earned a degree from the university. Students need a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and an undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The university may accept those with a lower GPA after a review of their applications. They also need to submit a GMAT score of 400 or higher or a minimum GRE score of 146 on both sections of the exam. UTRGV will waive the test score for students who have a graduate degree and a GPA of 3.25 or higher. Students will also write essays of 250 words in response to several questions on the application.

Students applying to the health administration version of the health sciences program must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and a bachelor’s degree. The university requires an official transcript that shows the applicant has this degree and GPA. They will also submit a letter of intent that shows they will attend UTRGV if accepted and two letters of recommendation. The health care administration and leadership certificate program requires an application, official transcript and resume. UTRGV encourages students to apply at least two months before any of these programs start.

RN to BSN students need a GPA of 2.5 or higher and a transcript that shows they took all prerequisite nursing classes in college. They either need to have a nursing license or a temporary work permit. UTRGV requires that nursing students submit proof of their vaccinations too. UTRGV asks for a document that lists the student’s volunteer and professional work, transcripts, an application, personal statement and GRE score from those applying to a physician assistant program.

Tuition and Financial Aid

UTRGV charges online graduate students $472.22 per credit hour, which comes to $1,416.66 for each class they take because every course is worth three credits. The total cost of finishing the health care MBA through the university is $17,000. In the RN to BSN program, students pay $277.77 per credit or $833.31 per class, which comes to $7,500 to complete the entire program.

To help students with some of their costs, UTRVG offers a scholarship for each incoming graduate student and lets them apply to more than 200 scholarship programs. They can also get financial aid through the FAFSA. Their aid packages will vary based on the programs they select and how many credits they take.
