About University of North Florida

The University of North Florida was established in 1969 when 1,000 acres near Jacksonville were set aside for an institute of higher learning. At that time, the only publicly funded institution in the area was Florida Community College in Jacksonville, which is now Florida State College at Jacksonville. The University of North Florida opened its doors in 1972.

The school grew quickly and, in 1980, there was an attempt by the legislature to merge the University with the University of Florida. Then-Governor Bob Graham vetoed the measure. Initially, the school was designed to teach juniors and seniors but freshmen were admitted starting in 1984.

The Princeton Review ranks the school as one of the best in the Southeast and US News & World Report ranks the school one of the best regional universities. Forbes lists the school as one of the best value colleges and the Wall Street Journal considers the school one of the top universities for student success.
