About University of North Dakota
Located in Grand Forks, North Dakota, the University of North Dakota is older than the state of North Dakota itself. The university was founded in 1883, a full six years before North Dakota became one of the United States.
The school, founded by George H. Walsh, was officially opened on September 8, 1884. At that time, the entire university was housed in one building sitting on a few acres of land and was surrounded on all sides by farms. Students at the time who commuted to University of North Dakota had to travel by horse or train to the campus from downtown Grand Forks. The flu epidemic in 1918 ravaged the University of North Dakota, killing more than 1400 people throughout the state of North Dakota. The university offered free housing and leftovers from the cafeteria for students during the Great Depression who were willing to do manual labor around the campus.
