Healthcare Management Degrees Offered at the University of Nebraska Medical Center

The University of Nebraska Medical Center offers several healthcare management degree programs as well as an RN to BSN program. Known as an advanced placement program for current professionals, the RN to BSN program accepts students who have a nursing diploma or an associate’s degree. It includes clinical training for those who lack experience, which is available at more than 100 facilities. Students must take at least six courses to graduate, including Health Assessment Across the Life Course, Patient-Centered Care and Evidence-Based Practice and Leadership in Nursing.
Though the RN to BSN program is open to undergrads, only graduate students can apply to the university’s Master of Health Administration (MHA) program. Students can complete the program in three years or less, with most students finishing their degrees in two years. They take eight credits of electives and 44 credits of required courses. The required courses that make up the MHA core include US Healthcare System, Health Policy, Skills for Leadership, Principles of Collaboration, Accounting and Financial Fundamentals and Health Care Organization Theory and Behavior.
Known for its healthcare degree programs, the University of Nebraska Medical Center offers several online options that might appeal to students with an interest in healthcare management or administration. One is an online degree program in emergency preparedness. It features 36 credits, including Emergency Preparedness: Protection, Introduction to Epidemiology, Applied Research in Public Health and Terrorism. This is also available as an online certificate program.
The University of Nebraska Medical Center also offers a Master of Public Health (MPH) in concentrations such as biostatistics and maternal and childcare. A concentration in health services administration and policy is available online too. It consists of 11 required courses, two electives, and a capstone. Students can either do some type of service project or internship or complete a thesis. Some of the required or foundation courses include Health Services Administration, Epidemiology in Public Health, Health Care Finance, Health Care Policy and Human Resource Management in Health Organizations.
Four online degree advancement options are also offered: Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science (BSMLS) DAO, Bachelor of Science in Medical Imaging and Therapeutic Sciences (BSMITS) DAO, Master of Perfusion Science (MPS) DAO, and Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS) DAO.
About the University of Nebraska Medical Center
The University of Nebraska Medical Center is a center that offers education degree and certificate programs for students in the healthcare and medical fields. Founded in 1880 as a private college of medicine, it became the Omaha Medical Center one year later. The center would become part of the University of Nebraska system near the turn of the century. Though the University of Nebraska had several campuses that offered healthcare programs, it decided to consolidate those campuses in the 1960s. University of Nebraska Medical Center Accreditation Details
UNMC has full accreditation for the degree and certificate programs available for students. That accreditation also covers the internships and fieldwork that students do and comes from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). Returning students and incoming students can use that accreditation when applying for financial aid with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The university’s nursing programs also have accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
University of Nebraska Medical Center Application Requirements
To enroll in the university’s RN to BSN program, students must pick which campus they will attend. The application includes a drop-down menu that includes each branch. A personal statement is required of up to 500 words. Students need to write about what they want to do in the healthcare industry, what type of nursing appeals to them and what makes them want to work as nurses. They also need to submit their official college/high school transcripts and two references. The application asks for the email addresses for two references. UNMC will contact the references with steps on how they can submit their letters of recommendation. All prospective nursing students must submit the NursingCAS application.
Both the online and traditional graduate programs at UNMC require that students have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher and a bachelor’s degree. The university looks at the GPA that a student earned over the last 60 credits of undergraduate classes taken or the last 18 credits of graduate courses attempted. Students should submit their official transcripts and a GRE score. The university will occasionally waive the test score requirement if the student meets other requirements. They also need to provide a personal statement of one full page and a resume that shows a minimum of one year of experience in the healthcare field.
Tuition and Financial Aid
At UNMC, undergrads in the RN to BSN program pay $368 per credit hour as a Nebraska resident and $990 per credit hour as a nonresident. The cost is the same on all campuses. Graduate students in the MPH and other residential programs will pay $342 per credit hour if they are from Nebraska and $951 per credit hour if they are from outside of the state. All of the university’s online graduate programs charge $580 per credit hour no matter where students live.
Students can apply for scholarships from UNMC and get new scholarships as long as they maintain B averages. The UNMC Scholarship Application allows students to apply for all types of available funds in one spot. Students should also complete the FAFSA, which helps them qualify for different types of aid offered by the federal government and the Nebraska state government. They can get grants, loans and work-study through this form. UNMC also has graduate assistantships available for residential graduate students. They can work in positions such as teaching assistants who help professors in the classroom and research assistants who assist with research projects in medicine and healthcare.
