About University of Missouri

The University of Missouri was the first public university west of the Mississippi and the first to be built in Thomas Jefferson’s Louisiana Purchase in 1839. From the beginning, the school had strong community support as the school was founded when citizens of Boone County pledged cash and land to create the university in Columbia, Missouri.

In 1867, The Normal College, which later became the School of Education, was added to the school in order to educate teachers and the school was awarded land-grant status in 1870. At that time, the name of the school became the College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts but soon became the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources. In 1888, the Missouri Agricultural Experiment Station opened. Unlike other land-grant institutions, the school combined research and land-grant efforts into one university rather than creating separate divisions. The belief was that professors would be able to conduct research and share what they learned directly with students.

Enrollment exploded after World War II as soldiers returned from the war to take advantage of the G.I. Bill. The first African-American students entered the school in 1950. Today, there are more than 35,000 students enrolled at the University of Missouri. US News & World Report ranks the University of Missouri in the top 150 of National Universities, the top 100 of Best Colleges for Veterans as well as the Best Value Schools. Forbes ranks the University in the top 200 of America’s Best Value Colleges, the top 100 of Public Colleges, top 100 of Research Universities and the top 30 of colleges in the Midwest.
