About Touro College

During his tour of the country in 1790, President George Washington visited the Touro Synagogue in Rhode Island. As part of his speech, he talked about equal opportunities in the new country. His words encouraged Isaac and Judah Touro, Jewish leaders in Colonial America, to endow many universities as well as the first free public library in North America in an effort to enrich the lives of others. The two men focused on supporting Israeli communities.

Bernard Lander, Ph.D., L.H.D. founded Touro College in 1970, naming it for the two brothers who had enriched the lives of so many. Initially, the school was designed to provide higher education for the Jewish community but students of all faiths were welcomed. The school taught courses in the Judaic tradition in a broad range of disciplines, including law, social work, and business.

Touro University International was established in 1998, founded by Dr. Yoram Neumann and Dr. Edith Neumann. The school was the first to offer an online accredited doctorate program without residency requirements. It was sold to a private group in 2007 and Dr. Luskin founded Touro University Worldwide in 2008 in order to fill the void created when Touro University International was sold.

Today, more than 19,000 students attend Touro University Worldwide around the globe. The university has a long track record of offering high-quality undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
