About George Washington University

Even before this country was founded, President George Washington knew the value of higher education. He presented many letters to Congress suggesting that an institute of higher learning should be established in Washington DC and even made reference to the school in his will. His dream did not come to fruition, however, until Baptist missionary Luther Rice raised funds to build a college designed to educate young people throughout the country. A building was constructed on what was then known as College Hill but has since been renamed Meridian Hill. In 1821, President James Monroe approved a charter that created Columbian College.

The first commencement, attended by President Monroe, John C. Calhoun, Henry Clay, and the Marquis de Lafayette was an important event for the young capital city. The new school was heavily influenced by the Freemasons and those symbols continue to be prominently displayed on campus. The Bible used to swear in each president of the school was the Bible of Freemason George Washington.

During the Civil War, the school closed as many of the students left to join the Confederate Army. During the war, the buildings were used as a hospital and barracks. In 1873, the school reopened as Columbian University but moved to a downtown location at 15th and H Streets.

In 1904, the school agreed to change its name to The George Washington University in partnership with the George Washington Memorial Association. The plan was to build a campus building in honor of the First President near National Mall but funding was an issue. The school kept the name and used what funds were raised to build the Lisner Auditorium and the school moved to its present location in Foggy Bottom in 1912.

In 1996, the school purchased the Mount Vernon College for Women. Today, there are more than 26,000 enrolled at The George Washington University. The school hosts classes at the US Capitol, the Newseum, and George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate. Students are provided research opportunities at almost every federal agency in the country as well as throughout the world. Alumni include former Secretary of State Colin Powell, former Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid, former FBI Director, J. Edgar Hoover, and former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.
