About Stetson University

Stetson University is a private university that owns and operates several campuses in Florida. Established as the DeLand Academy, the school opened in 1883 and was named after its founder, Henry Addison DeLand. Granted a charter from the state a few years later, the school later became DeLand University and then adopted the name Stetson University in 1889. John B. Stetson now only started the famous company of the same name, but he also donated land to the university and worked closely with its founder. Affiliated with the Florida Baptist Convention for several years, this affiliation ended near the turn of the 20th century. That affiliation existed again from 1919 to 1995, but the university is now a separate and unaffiliated school.

The university now features four campuses, all of which are close to I-4, which makes it easy for students to commute to one of them. Both the Wall Street Journal and Forbes rank Stetson as one of the best American colleges. U.S. News and World Report placed Stetson on its list of the best southern colleges at number five. Stetson University also ranks as one of the nation’s best graduate schools, according to Washington Monthly.

The College of Law and all legal programs have accreditation from the American Bar Association (ABA) too.
