About Samford University

Samford University originated in 1841 when the Alabama Baptist State Convention welcomed an inaugural class of 31 men to Rev. James DeVotie’s donated land for Howard College. Destroyed by fire in 1854, Howard College was rebuilt and turned into a Confederate hospital by 1863. After the Civil War ended in 1865, Howard moved from Marion to East Lake in 1887. In 1896, Anna Judge made history as Howard College’s first female student. Fully coeducational since 1913, Howard College developed the Southeast’s earliest Department of Pharmacy in 1927. On July 1, 1943, Howard was chosen for the V-12 Navy College Training Program. Fourteen years later, Howard College relocated again to Birmingham. Samford University Accreditation Details

On December 13, 2017, Samford University announced that the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) Board of Trustees voted to reaffirm the Level VI accreditation through the next 2026-27 evaluation under President Andrew Westmoreland, PhD, who earned the Birmingham Business Journal CEO Award. Located 156 miles east via Interstate 20 in Decatur, Georgia, this elite 11-state Southeast Region accreditor is authorized by the U.S. Education Department to review Samford’s 75+ degrees. Further, the Ida Moffett School was accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) on November 3, 2014. The Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) approved Samford in April 2019.

Samford University Application Requirements

Admission to Samford University is classified as “moderately difficult” by Peterson’s because 3,188 of the 3,884 Fall 2018 applicants were triumphant for 82 percent acceptance. First-year Bulldogs seeking the B.S. in Healthcare Administration must finish a college-prep high school curriculum or GED. The Class of 2022 achieved an average GPA of 3.64. Mid-range admitted SAT scores were 1080-1280. The middle 50th percentile had ACT scores of 23-29. The Ida Moffett School of Nursing requires a minimum 3.0 GPA and 1000 SAT score for the B.S.N. Transfers must culminate 24+ semester credits with cumulative GPAs above 2.5. The College of Health Sciences admits post-grads after regionally accredited bachelor’s completion at 3.0 or better GPAs. Minimum GRE scores of 144 Quantitative, 153 Verbal, and 4.0 Analytical are mandated. Similar testing standards are 402 for the MAT or 480 for the GMAT. Three years of experience qualify for a GRE/GMAT waiver. The M.S. in Physician Assistant Studies also lists 12 prerequisite courses, including Microbiology and Statistics.
