Healthcare Administration and Management Degrees at Saint Louis University

At Saint Louis University, undergrads can major in health management and earn a Bachelor of Science degree before working in the field or making the transition to one of the university’s graduate programs. The undergraduate program includes a pre-med track for students who will go to medical school and offers classes for both honors and scholars students. Some of the courses that all health management student will take include Applied Biostatistics, Health Operations Management, Health Care Human Resources Management, Health Care Financial Management and Introduction to Global Health.
The university offers both a Master of Health Administration (MHA) and an Executive Master of Health Administration (MHA). U.S. News and World Report ranks the standard program as one of the top 10 health management graduate programs in the nation. It includes both electives and required classes such as Analytical Methods for Health Management, Financial Aspects of Health Care, Health Management and Policy Rounds and Ethical Leadership in Health Management and Policy. Saint Louis University requires that students do an internship too. Executives in the separate MHA program must already have some practical experience, which lets them skip that requirement.
Two health administration dual degree programs are also available from Saint Louis University. The first combines the MHA and the Master of Business Administration (MBA) programs. It asks students to take one year of business classes to complete the MBA and to take one to two years of healthcare classes to complete the MHA. Another option combines the MHA program with a law school program. Students will work on the MHA first and then take law school classes. They can do their internships for a health administration degree in their first years of law school too.
About Saint Louis University
Saint Louis University is a private university affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church and the Society of Jesus, better known as the Jesuits. Established in 1818 as the Saint Louis Academy, it would become Saint Louis College just two years later. The academy separated from the college and is still open today as a private high school. It moved to a new spot in the city after the Civil War ended, which is the site of the university today. Since becoming Saint Louis University, the school became one of the top private colleges in the Midwest. Now called SLU for short, the university accepts students from denominations outside of Catholicism.
SLU encourages freshmen to live on its campus as a way to experience college life. Those students can choose from several residence halls that charge different rates. Students can continue to live on the campus in their later years, though many opt to live on their own. Both ARWU and U.S. News and World Report rank SLU in terms of the country’s and the world’s best colleges, ranking within the top 100 on both lists of the top American colleges. SLU now has an enrollment of more than 12,000 students.
Saint Louis University Accreditation Details
Both the standard and executive MHA programs offered by the university have accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME). Students in the combined MBA/MHA program will find that their business classes have accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). SLU also has full accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), which acts as both regional and institutional accreditation.
Saint Louis University Application Requirements
SLU considers applications for its health management bachelor’s program based on features such as standardized test scores and transcripts. Higher scores and grades show that the students will do better in college. It requires that all incoming freshmen have either a high school diploma or GED. They will submit an application online and pay the application fee at the same time. The university then asks that they submit their test scores and transcripts, including transcripts that show they took college courses or earned credits in high school. SLU encourages students to submit some optional documents too, including a secondary school report, resume and/or letter of recommendation. Prospective undergrads can interview with an admissions counselor too.
Students applying to the traditional MHA program must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher in a college program and a bachelor’s degree. Though SLU requires a standardized test score, it does not have a minimum score that it requires. It does recommend that students score in the 50th percentile though. They can submit a GRE, GMAT, LSAT or MCAT score. The university asks for three letters of recommendation, a resume and a professional goals statement too. All prospective MHA students must interview with the university for a spot in the program. The executive MHA program has the same requirements and also asks that students have at least three years of professional healthcare experience. Students applying to a dual degree program must meet the requirements for MHA majors and the requirements of the second program.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Part-time undergrads attending SLU pay $770 per credit hour. Most of its undergrads are full-time students who pay a rate of $44,700 a year. This allows them to take 12 or more credits during both the fall and spring semesters. Students using the GI Bill and those currently enlisted in a military branch pay $410 per credit hour. Undergrads also pay an average of $724 in fees each year. Graduate students pay $1,160 per credit hour for all of their courses. The university reduces this rate to $1,100 per credit hour for those taking MBA classes part-time.
Some of the scholarships available from SLU go to students who graduated from a Jesuit high school. Students should submit an application by the first of December, which will automatically qualify them for most of the university’s scholarships. Other scholarships have a separate application that students need to submit. Students can get up to $23,000 a year and have the option of renewing their scholarships as long as they maintain a GPA of 2.0 to 3.2 based on the award. Grants and loans are also available for students, and some may qualify for work study. They will only get those forms of financial aid if they complete the FAFSA.
