Quinnipiac University has a School of Health Sciences that offers pre-professional and professional degree programs for students. The university offers a Master of Business Administration with a track in health care management, which is a joint program offered by this school and its School of Business. It requires that students take classes from both schools. They learn how business skills and talents can transfer to the health care industry.
This program features a business core that is worth 25 credits. It includes the same courses that students in MBA tracks take, including Managing the Decision Making Process, Organizational Behavior and Leadership for Decision Makers, and Decision Making in a Global Economy. One of the last classes that MBA students take is a Decision Making Capstone. This class allows students to put their skills into practice and see if they can handle making important decisions in the field.
Other courses in the program are part of the health care management core. Those classes are worth 15 credits and include Foundations of Health Care Management, Integrated Health Systems and Managed Care, Financial Management in Health Care Organizations and Quality Management in Health Care Facilities. Legal Aspects of Health Care Delivery is another required course that goes over some of the legal issues of working as a health care manager. Quinnipiac also asks students to take at least one elective and gives them options such as Health Policy and Politics, Epidemiology and Population Health and Corporate Compliance in the Health Care Industry. Students can also do a practicum as an elective.
About Quinnipiac University
Quinnipiac University is a university in Connecticut known for its polling institute. Called the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, it contacts people living in certain states and asks them questions, which it uses to determine the general public opinion. The university itself opened in 1929 and was the effort of work done by Samuel W. Tator and Phillip Troup. While Troup served as the first president of the university, Tator worked as a professor for the school and helped establish its business programs. It opened as the Connecticut College of Commerce after another college in the area shut down and later became the Junior College of Commerce. The college adopted the Quinnipiac name to honor the Native Americans who once lived in the state and later became Quinnipiac University.
The university operates one campus in New Haven where a former college once operated. It also has two campuses in Hamden that it calls its York Hill and Mount Caramel campuses. The New Haven campus grew substantially after the university acquired buildings previously used by a health insurance company. The main campus has an active Greek life with nearly 20 organizations that students can join. Those students can also use resources available from the Lender School of Business Center and other buildings on that campus. Quinnipiac University added some online programs that students can complete on their own schedules, which helped its overall enrollment grow to include more than 9,000 students.
Quinnipiac University Accreditation Details
Though the health care management track offered by Quinnipiac University does not have accreditation, most of its health programs have accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). As that track is part of the university’s MBA program, it also has accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). Quinnipiac itself has regional accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). This is the type of accreditation that lets the university accept government funds, award financial aid and accept transfer credits.
Quinnipiac University Application Requirements
Students applying to the university’s MBA program must pick the application that best fits that program. Quinnipiac offers several applications for those applying to the 4 + 1 program and those applying to the online program. The application includes various sections that let students write down the names of the some of the courses they took in their undergrad years and to include notes on the professional work they did and the experience they have.
Graduate students will also submit transcripts from any of the colleges they attended, even if they only earned credits that they transferred to a degree program. Those transcripts show the university all the classes the student took and the grades he or she received. Quinnipiac also asks for a resume to see how much professional healthcare management experience the student has and three letters of recommendation. While two of those letters can come from teachers and other academic references, at least one letter must come from a professional reference. Students will also submit a GRE score and a letter of intent. The university will accept a GMAT score in lieu of a GRE score. It does not require scores from students who have professional licenses or a minimum of five years of experience beyond the bachelor’s level.
Tuition and Financial Aid
All the MBA tracks offered by the university charge the same tuition rates. Those students pay $1,035 per credit hour. This rate remains the same for students who earn a certificate while pursuing a graduate degree or after earning a degree. Those who do not have health insurance must buy coverage from the university for a fee of $50 per semester. They also pay miscellaneous fees of up to $350 each semester. Full-time students can buy a meal plan from the university that provides them with meals in campus cafeterias for $200 a semester too.
Many graduate students attending Quinnipiac University use their veteran benefits to pay for schooling or use a payment plan. The payment plans charge a small start-up fee but allow students to make small payments at the beginning of each month instead of paying all their costs at the beginning of the year. A university fund awards MBA students with scholarships and allows them to renew their scholarships if they maintain a minimum 3.25-GPA. Grants and loans can help students with a high amount of need pay for the MBA program too. Some assistantships are available also and allow students to work in the learning center, library, and other departments on the campus. Quinnipiac University recommends that students applying to the MBA and health care management program also apply for financial aid.
