About Old Dominion University
Old Dominion University is a public research university in Virginia that emphasizes the importance of research. Established in 1930, the university opened as a small regional branch of the College of William and Mary. Called the Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary, it served as a two-year college. More than 200 students signed up for classes that first year and met in an old former school. This new college offered opportunities for students who could not afford a traditional college and charged them just $50 a year. It would later become Old Dominion College and begin offering four-year degree programs. This led to the college eventually becoming Old Dominion University and adding graduate and post-graduate programs to its curriculum.
Now called Old Dominion and ODU, it offers more than 70 degree programs for undergrads and more than 90 programs for graduate students and doctoral candidates. Old Dominion University Accreditation Details
ODU earned regional accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) in 1966 and successfully renewed that accreditation multiple times over the years. It most recently earned an accreditation renewal in 2012 and will not come up for renewal again until 2022. Though its health services program does not have accreditation, some of its other programs do, including those in teaching and business. That accreditation comes from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
Old Dominion University Application Requirements
ODU has an acceptance rate of more than 80% but only accepts those who meet its minimum admissions requirements. The university’s early decision deadline is November 1. Students applying by this deadline must sign a binding document that promises they will attend ODU if accepted. The university has this deadline in place for students applying for merit scholarships too. There is no set deadline for other applications because the university has rolling admissions. As long as there is space left in the next semester, the university will accept new students. Those who apply by the early action deadline will receive a scholarship letter that details their awards by the middle of January.
The main requirements for incoming freshmen include the ODU application and its $50 fee. It also asks for an official test score and a transcript from the student’s high school. Students can submit either an ACT or SAT score or both. The university will only consider the highest score received. Nontraditional students who graduated from high school at least two years before applying and those who have a GED do not need to submit a test score. ODU offers an online application status check for students. They can go online, enter their accounts and view the decision made by the university. This account lets them check on the status of their financial aid too.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Students pay a resident or a nonresident rate based on whether they live in Virginia. The university only offers the resident rate to those who are full-time Virginia residents who lived there for one full year before applying. It may ask for proof that a student is a resident before giving him or her this rate. Residents pay $352 per credit hour when taking classes on the ODU campus or any extension center. The rate for nonresidents is $982 per credit hour. Students taking online classes will pay $389 per credit hour as a Virginia resident and $568 per credit hour as a nonresident. There is a discount available for those in the military, which reduces their rate to $250 per credit hour.
ODU has a priority deadline of January 1 for students who need financial aid. It must receive their applications for admissions and financial aid by this deadline. Students who apply by this date have a better chance of getting both institutional and government aid than those who wait later do. Incoming students can get merit-based scholarships from the university. Those who maintain a GPA of 3.4 or higher and apply for financial aid each year can renew their scholarships. ODU financial aid packages also include work programs on its campus, grants and student loans. Financial aid is available for any student enrolling in the health science degree program at Old Dominion University.
