Healthcare Management Programs Available at the Medical University of South Carolina

The Medical University of South Carolina appears in our ranking of the Top 20 Master’s in Healthcare Management Online / Online MBA Healthcare Administration.

Though the Medical University of South Carolina is a traditional medical school, it now offers several programs for students with an interest in healthcare management. These programs are all available online and allow students to study wherever they want.

A major in healthcare studies is available for undergrads. This is one of the only bachelor’s programs offered by the university and includes five semesters of classes. Students must also agree to visit the campus at least once each semester for a residency session. The university offers this as a completion program for students who already have at least 60 college credits.

Two of the healthcare programs offered by the university are open to graduate students. One is a Master of Health Administration (MHA), which gives students the chance to attend healthcare conferences and to participate and present at some of those events. The MHA program features 67 credits of courses, including Health Behavior and Epidemiology, Health Policy, Human Resources Management, Strategic Management in Healthcare Services and Health Care Management and Operations. A separate version of the program allows healthcare executives with more experience to take only 54 credits. Executives can enroll in the program as full-time or part-time students.

The other program available for advanced students is the university’s Doctor of Health Administration (DHA). It asks students to pick between the health administrator and the health professional tracks. All DHA students will take 38 credits of classes and do 18 credits of dissertation work. The classes in the program include Organizational Behavior, Health Politics and Advocacy, Change Management and Negotiation, National Health Policy and Current Issues in Healthcare. Students will also take electives that address the future of healthcare.

About the Medical University of South Carolina

The Medical University of South Carolina is one of the only medical schools in South Carolina. Established in 1824, it was one of the nation’s first schools to offer dedicated training for doctors and nurses. It helped establish a standard of health care that professionals still follow today. Called the Medical College of South Carolina for a number of years, it offered departments that allowed students to focus on specialized forms of medicine, including surgery and pediatrics. The college would slowly establish other schools such as the College of Pharmacy and the College of Graduate Studies, which opened in 1949. That college now offers both graduate and doctoral programs.

Known as MUSC to many, the university has a foundation that allows alumni and others to make donations that it uses to launch new programs and award scholarships to worthy students. It also operates a teaching hospital that allows students to work in the medical field. MUSC now ranks as one of the best teaching hospitals and one of the top medical schools in the country.

Medical University of South Carolina Accreditation Details

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, also called the SACSCC, granted full accreditation to MUSC. This accreditation means that all its programs have accreditation and that students can transfer credits and/or apply for financial aid. It covers both the online and the traditional programs offered by the university too.

Medical University of South Carolina Application Requirements

MUSC requires that undergrads applying to the healthcare studies program have an associate degree in a health field and gives priority to those with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Prospective undergrads need to submit transcripts that show they took at least one statistics class and a full resume that shows all the professional experience they have. They will also need to supply contact information for two references of their choosing and an essay.

The admissions requirements for graduate students are similar and include a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Those applying for a traditional program need to submit a GRE or GMAT score, but the university does not require a test score for executives. Students will also need to submit three letters of recommendation or contact information for three references and transcripts that show they took statistics classes. There is a small application fee and an essay that students will need to complete when they submit the application.

To enroll in the university’s DHA program, students must complete each section of the application. Those sections ask for information on the student’s educational history and professional experience. They’ll need to list contact information for three separate references, their personal contact information, a goals statement of 1,000 words and a resume. MUSC asks for official transcripts, a description of the student’s current job, a chart that shows where that position is within a healthcare organization and copies of any licenses the applicant has. It typically makes admissions decisions within four weeks of receiving a completed application.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Healthcare studies majors pay MUSC $7,736 per semester as a South Carolina resident or $11,823 as a nonresident. Students who only take classes part-time pay $645 to $986 per credit as a resident or nonresident. Both traditional and executives in the MHA program pay $8,525 per term as a resident. The cost for nonresidents is $9,400 per term for executives and $12,454 per term in the traditional program. Part-time students who are residents pay $865 per credit in the executive program and $970 per credit in the residential program. This price increases per credit to $954 in the executive program and $1,645 in the residential program for nonresidents.

MUSC highly encourages students to use the FAFSA and apply for financial aid at the same time that they apply to the university. The deadline for students to get financial aid for the fall semester is May first. In addition to the loans and grants offered by the government, students can pay their costs in other ways. MUSC has a Future Scholars program that allows students to put back money for their children’s future educational costs. A similar program offered by the state lets students and their parents prepay for college. Five general scholarships, as well as some for each college, are available from the university too. The Graduate Incentive Scholarship awards graduate students up to $5,000 and doctoral students up to $10,000. Students continuing in any of the healthcare management and administration programs offered by Medical University of South Carolina can apply for scholarships each year too.
