Healthcare Management at Hofstra University

Hofstra University appears in our ranking of the Top 20 Online Healthcare Law Degree Programs.

Hofstra University offers four programs in healthcare management that are at the graduate level with programs delivered on the campus on Long Island or via online study. Programs include a Master of Health Administration, a Master of Science in Health Informatics, a Master of Business Administration in Health Services Management, and a Master of Business Administration in Strategic Healthcare Management.

Students who choose the MHA program will need to complete 48 credit hours in a curriculum designed for current and aspiring professionals who want to learn about the management and organizational theories that impact modern healthcare policymaking. Some of the classes students must complete are U.S. Health System, Health Law and Ethics, Health Services Organizational Behavior and Analysis and Epidemiology for Health Care Managers.

Meanwhile, students who choose the Master of Science in Health Informatics will focus on IT-based classes and topics that will help graduates improve healthcare delivery and management. The MS in Health Informatics requires that students complete 41 credits. Near the end of the program, students will participate in a six-credit practicum that will take place at a local organization that has health systems in place, which will allow students to obtain hands-on training and experience.

The third option in healthcare management at Hofstra University is the MBA in Health Services Management. The program is designed for future managers who want to lead business organizations in healthcare. Students must have a bachelor’s degree to qualify for entry into the program, and students can qualify for a waiver of the GMAT requirement if their undergraduate GPA is at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale. Students can also qualify to transfer credits earned at other institutions into the program.

For applicants who choose the MBA in Strategic Healthcare Management, classes students will take include Strategic Healthcare Management, Health Systems and Finance, and Health Information Systems. Students will also take Marketing of Healthcare Services, Health Services Human Resources, and Health Law and Ethics. The strategic healthcare management program is delivered online, so students can enroll whether they live on Long Island or anywhere else that has an internet connection.

About Hofstra University

Hofstra University was established in 1935 as an extension campus of New York University. The campus was built on land donated by a lumber entrepreneur named William S. Hofstra and his wife, Kate Mason, the latter of which directed that her estate be used for charitable, humanitarian, or scientific purposes. The college would initially cater to commuter students with day and evening classes.

There were around 800 students in attendance during the school’s first year in operation. Eventually, the university would begin featuring four-year degrees, and it would become an independent, private university in the 1960s. The official colors of the school are gold, white, and blue. The campus in Hempstead covers 244 acres, and nearly 11,000 students attend classes at the institution. Campus sports teams are nicknamed The Pride and play in NCAA Division I games.

Hofstra University Accreditation Details

Hofstra University is regionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, which is an accrediting agency recognized by the Department of Education and is responsible for accrediting institutions of higher learning in New York and those along the Atlantic seaboard. In addition to regional accreditation, the university is accredited in more than 25 academic areas by additional organizations and commissions.

Accreditations have been earned from the American Chemical Society, the American Art Therapy Association, the Accreditation Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications, and the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Additional accreditations come from the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, and the National Association of School Psychologists.

Hofstra University Application Requirements

To apply to Hofstra University, students must submit the official application and a $70 application fee. The university describes its admissions process as selective, with around 62 percent of students earning admission. The university reviews the student’s high school GPA, the rigorousness of the curriculum, and his or her standardized test scores. Students can submit letters of recommendation, evidence of extracurricular activities, and an essay if they choose.

Overall, the university receives more than 27,000 applications each year. The average GPA of enrolled students is 3.6 on a 4.0 scale. About 90 percent of students have a GPA of at least 3.0 for their high school average. The average ACT is 27, and the average SAT is 1238. The university suggests that students can take the opportunity during the admissions process to communicate about life experiences that could increase the likelihood of success in college.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Tuition and fees for undergraduate students at Hofstra University come to $45,540 per year. Students who enroll in a part-time class schedule will pay $1,500 per semester hour, and students also pay a student activity fee of $160. Residence hall charges come to $13,100 per year for a place in a suite or $10,880 in one of the high-rise residential halls. A dining plan costs $4,348 per year, but there are additional dining plans available.

Books and supplies are estimated to cost $1,000 per year, and the university recommends that students budget for incidentals and travel costs of $2,358. For graduate students, the cost is $1,430 per credit hour in the Zarb School of Business and $1,398 for all other programs. Some special programs have unique fees. The audiology program is $1,450 per credit hour, the Online Master of Business Administration (MBA) is $1,430 per credit hour, and the Executive MBA is $95,680 for the entire program.

The average student receives gift aid of $23,836 when they attend Hofstra University, and the university publishes that 98 percent of students receive some type of financial aid outside of traditional student loans. Financial aid at Hofstra University is handled by the Student Financial Services and Registrar Suite.
