Health Care Management Degree Programs at Emory University

Emory University appears in our ranking of the Top 35 Schools for a Graduate Degree in Public Health.

Emory University is home to the Rollins School of Public Health, which ranks as one of the top public health schools in the United States. One option is a Master of Public Health (MPH) in Public Policy. This program helps students understand the American health care system and the finances of that system. It includes 42 credits of courses such as Introduction to the US Health Care System, Financial and Managerial Accounting and Grant Writing in Public Health. Students will do a practicum in public health and submit a final capstone paper too.

The university’s MPH in Health Care Management is a more specialized degree program that looks closely at the operations of health care facilities and organizations. It includes some of the same classes as the public policy program and also requires that students take 42 credits of courses in total. Those courses include Health Policy and Resource Allocation, Financial Management for Health Care Organizations, Economic Evaluation of Health Care Programs, Health Care Marketing and Physician Performance. Emory requires that these students take a final capstone course and that they do a practicum. Students can also enroll in an accelerated version of this program. Though it only takes one year to finish, the program is more intensive than the traditional program and not suitable for all types of students.

Also available is a joint program in business and public health. Students can complete both an MPH and a Master of Business Administration (MBA). This program requires that students apply to both the Rollins School of Public Health and the Goizueta Business School and that they get acceptance letters from both. Students will usually spend one year working on an MBA and one year on an MPH. They must take 50 credits of business classes and 30 credits of public health courses. The university also offers a Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) in Health Policy and Health Services Research. Most of its health care management and administration programs use a cohort system. Students will work in the same small groups in most of their classes.

About Emory University

Emory University is a private university affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Established in 1836, it is one of the oldest colleges in Georgia. Though the university admitted some women to a few of its programs during its early years, it became a fully coeducational campus in the early 1950s. It was also one of the first schools in the south to admit African American students. Emory now ranks as one of the top 100 colleges in America, according to U.S. News and World Report, Washington Monthly, Forbes and Wall Street Journal, which ranks it within the top 20 of American colleges. Emory also offers some of the nation’s best graduate programs and ranks as one of the world’s best schools of higher learning. It now has an enrollment of more than 15,000 students.

Emory University Accreditation Details

The Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) accredited all the public health programs offered by Emory University. This accreditation applies to all the courses that students take and any of the fieldwork experiences they have outside of the university. It also has regional accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Emory maintains its regional accreditation because it developed a committee of professionals who are responsible for ensuring that the university exceeds the minimum standards for that accreditation.

Emory University Application Requirements

More than 400 students applying to each of the university’s MPH programs every year, but the university only accepts fewer than 50 students into each one. Students will use the SOPHAS website when applying. The site asks them to answer some questions about where they earned their undergrad degrees and what they studied as well as for their contact information. All other required information comes from documents that students can either submit through the mail or online. Those requirements include transcripts from any college an applicant attended where he or she earned credits.

The university also asks for a personal statement in lieu of an essay. This statement gives students the chance to talk about any poor grades on their transcripts and other problems they had. They can also write about why they want to study at Emory and how a degree in health management or administration will help them. Students should also provide two letters of recommendation from either academic references or employers/supervisors. Emory suggests that students submit their resumes and requires an official GRE score. Incoming graduate students have an average GPA of 3.32 and an average GRE score of 4.05 on the analytical writing section and 155 on both the verbal and quantitative sections.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Students in most of the Emory University health care management programs will pay a flat rate each semester. This allows them to take a full course load on the university’s main campus. The cost for full-time students in an MPH program is $16,900 a semester. It takes four semesters to finish one of these programs. Those enrolled in an accelerated program will pay $22,700 a semester and spend three semesters working on their degrees. The dual program, which includes MPH and MBA courses, charges $26,100 per semester for the two semesters that students spend in the Rollins School of Public Health. They pay a different rate when taking MBA courses. Part-time students enrolled in any of these programs will pay $2,100 per credit hour.

Graduate students today face both education and personal expenses. Their education expenses include tuition costs and miscellaneous fees, while their personal expenses include transportation to the university and housing costs. Emory University recommends that prospective students look for fellowships and scholarships from external sources before they apply for any loans. They can get federal direct and PLUS loans and take out alternative private loans. The federal government has a program that will forgive their loans if students work in public service positions and make regular loan payments over the course of 10 years. With the Rollins Earn and Learn program, students can make money while enrolled in graduate programs as they work for public health agencies and organizations. Emory University allows students to apply for all types of funding before they enroll in any of its public health degree programs.
