About Clarkson University

Clarkson University was founded in 1896 by the family of a pillar of the Northern New York community named Thomas S. Clarkson. He was dedicated to both education and the well-being of humanity as a whole. Clarkson was killed in an accident at one of his stone quarries, and his family established the school in his honor. During its first years, the school was known as the Thomas S. Clarkson Memorial College of Technology.

The year 1984 was important in that it was the year when Clarkson University was first considered a university by the New York State Board of Regents. Throughout Clarkson University’s life, it has remained true to its inspiration’s vision even as it climbs ever higher in national rankings. U.S. News and World Report ranks the online business program, including the healthcare management focus, in the top 40 in the nation. Clarkson University is also No. 31 among “Best Value Schools.” The university’s ranking overall is No. 102 in the country. Veterans get an above-average fair shake at Clarkson University, too, as the university ranks No. 64 in that category.

Clarkson University Application Requirements

Undergraduate students must submit their official transcripts from all high schools attended. Self-sent transcripts are unacceptable. Each student must also submit two letters of recommendation and a statement of purpose. Students must also take either the SAT or the ACT. Students who take the SAT after the fall of 2017 do not have to complete the essay portion, but if students took the test prior to the fall of 2017 and filled out that portion, the university will take that into account.

Graduate students must have a bachelor’s degree from an American university that has achieved regional accreditation. Students who attend foreign universities must provide documentation that such universities have earned the equivalent of regional accreditation in the applicable countries. Graduate students may have to take the Graduate Management Admissions Test, the Miller Analogies Test, or the Graduate Record Examinations depending on their chosen field of study. Each department also has its own guidelines on academic qualifications for admittance into graduate school. Students should check the website to see what is required of them.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Annual tuition at Clarkson University is $49,858. Housing is $9,535 annually, and meal plans cost between $4,000 and $7,100. Fees come to about another $2,000. All told, the costs come to a bit more than $65,000 per year for undergraduate students.

Graduate tuition varies by program. The Master of Business Administration, for example, costs $1,174 per credit hour. Some graduate programs cost only $988 per credit hour while others cost $1,606 per credit hour.

Students may also purchase what’s known as the “Knight Card,” which is a prepaid, declining balance card that students can use both on campus and at businesses in town. One such business is the legendary Bagelry, which has provided world-class, New York-style water bagels to the town of Potsdam for nearly 40 years.

Financial aid at Clarkson University begins with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, which is also known as the FAFSA. Students fill out this form with all of their income and assets information as well as that of their parents if they are not emancipated from them. Based on the provided information, the school and the government will determine what, if any, financial aid to which the student is entitled. Such aid is need-based, and it comes in three different varieties: scholarships, grants, and loans.

Students also have the option of applying for private financial aid from their local banks or credit unions or from any entity that has money to bestow. Many times, these awards are merit-based instead of need-based. Many forms of financial aid, both private and public, have academic standards attached. Students who fail to meet these standards risk losing their awards. In some cases, students may even have to repay money already awarded and have any remaining awards converted to unsubsidized loans. Unsubsidized loans are those that accrue interest on both the principal and the generated interest while the student is enrolled.

Clarkson University is a nationally recognized powerhouse in engineering and business, and it is always planning for its future development.
