Appalachian State University offers a Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Management that is designed to prepare students for careers in an ever-changing field. The program includes a foundation in business combined with an understanding of today's complicated healthcare world. The program was established in 1972 and has a reputation for producing graduates who are ready for leadership roles in organizations focused on improving the health of a community, region, state, nation or country. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Appalachian State University prepares students for the exciting field of nursing, creating graduates who are prepared to work in a diverse and dynamic field. The program provides students with a generalist understanding of nursing, exposing them to various areas of nursing practice including pediatrics, women's, adult, community and mental health. The degree also includes instruction in arts, humanities, mathematics, and sciences. Students benefit from a comprehensive nursing skills lab that includes simulations where hands-on experiences strengthen their nursing skills. The program is only available on campus. Upon graduation, students are eligible to apply for licensure although those who plan to practice in a state other than North Carolina should check with the licensing board in their state. About Appalachian State University

Appalachian State University began in 1899 as Wautauga Academy when the Doughtery brothers, Blanford and Dauphin, created the school to educate rural North Carolina young people. Local residents assisted the brothers in creating a school designed to educate teachers on land that was owned by their father, Daniel. The school was successful and, in 1903, the brothers traveled to the state capital with a drafted bill that would establish teacher training schools throughout North Carolina. After the bill passed, Wautauga Academy became the Appalachian Training School for Teachers.

As the school continued to succeed, it underwent another name change in 1925 to the Appalachian Normal School and became the Appalachian State Teachers College in 1929 when a four-year degree program was added. The school gained university status in 1967. The school joined the University of North Carolina system in 1971.

Today, there are more than 19,000 students attending Appalachian State University. There are six undergraduate colleges, one music school and one graduate school. Approximately 98 percent of full-time faculty have doctorate, first professional or other terminal degrees and there are more than 150 undergraduate and graduate majors. The freshmen retention rate is 87.2 percent compared to the national average of 68 percent.

Appalachian State University Application Requirements

Students who wish to enter the Health Care Management program at Appalachian State University should complete the Common Application and supplement. They must provide an official high school transcript and official SAT or ACT scores if they are under the age of 23. Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended must also be provided.

Admission to the BSN program at Appalachian State University is highly competitive. Students must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on any courses taken or transferred to the University and must have a "C" or better in the following courses:

Students who wish to enter the RN to BSN program must hold an Associate Degree in Applied Science or Diploma in Nursing from an accredited college or university. All students must have completed 44 credit hours in English, humanities, social and behavioral sciences, mathematics and natural sciences. They must also have successfully completed Human Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology with lab, Developmental Psychology or Human Growth Development as well as college-level Statistics.

Appalachian State University Tuition and Financial Aid

Undergraduate tuition for in-state residents at Appalachian State University is $530.50 per credit hour and $2,381 per credit hour for out-of-state residents. Online program rates for students who are residents of North Carolina is $143 per credit hour and $643.50 per credit hour for those whose residence is out-of-state.

Graduate tuition for North Carolina residents $605 per credit hour $2,284 per credit hour for out-of-state students. Online tuition for graduate courses is $237 per credit hour for in-state and $895.50 for out-of-state residents.

The Appalachian State University Office of Student Financial Aid has a mission to help any student who demonstrates financial need to achieve their higher education goals. In order to qualify for any financial assistance, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the form must be renewed on an annual basis. Financial aid may be offered in the form of grants or scholarships which are considered gift aid and do not need to be repaid. Students who attend on campus may also be offered work-study programs which provide employment to offset the cost of education. Loans may also be included in financial aid packages but it is important to remember they must be repaid upon graduation.
