Master of Science in Biomedical Informatics
The curriculum for the Master of Science in Biomedical Informatics (MS) prepares students for careers as professional leaders with a broad based understanding of the principles and theory of biomedical informatics. Students have the opportunity to participate in mentored scientific research and informatics development and implementation projects working offered in conjunction with the Department of Biomedical Informatics. Students are also required to participate in a summer Internship Program in Biomedical Informatics providing a top quality Biomedical Informatics research experience. Biomedical Informatics is the interdisciplinary science of acquiring, structuring, analyzing and providing access to biomedical data, information and knowledge. The MS degree requires 22-34 credits for completion as well as the completion of a master thesis. Students in the MS degree program can choose an area of concentration including the following:

The Master of Science (MS) in Applied Clinical Informatics is a two-year program designed to in-depth expertise in clinical informatics. The curriculum for the MS program includes the following courses: fundamentals of programming, clinical information systems, workflow and human computer interaction, clinical decision support, information system lifecycle, and organizational leadership. The program is supplemented with individual and team-based practicum experiences as well an extended Capstone Project. Graduates of the program are prepared to assume leadership roles in the application and innovation of clinical informatics nationally. These individuals are trained in a wide range of clinical and nonclinical disciplines with a core understanding of the care process, informatics concepts, and the changing social, organizational, and economic context in which health care is delivered. The program requires 36-credits of curriculum that can be completed in 21 months (coursework intensive first year with the second year participating in a capstone project.
Master of Science in Biostatistics
The Master of Science in Biostatistics (MS) program provides students with a solid theoretical foundation, broad methodological training, and extensive computing experience. It requires a minimum of 45 credits and a mentored thesis project. The program can be completed in as little as 2 years. Coursework for the program includes theory, applications, critical thinking, communication, and computing in areas such as statistical and probability theory, foundations of statistical inference, regression methodology, learning algorithms, advanced computing, consulting, epidemiologic methods, and clinical trials. Effective communication and presentation skills are emphasized throughout the program.
Master of Public Health
The Master of Public Health (MPH) Program is a two-year interdisciplinary program and provides training for future research scientists and public health professionals to enter careers as leaders dedicated to improving public health. Students in the program have the ability to choose from three areas of specialization from the following:
The Epidemiology Concentration is available for those students with a strong clinical background to provide them with additional training for development as public health scientists or professionals. Core public health courses providing students with a core foundation in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Social and Behavioral Science, Environmental Science, Public Health Systems, and Research Ethics. The 240-hour public health practicum specialized to meet the needs and interests of the MPH student. A thesis is required and students in the Epidemiology track complete for completion of translational research resulting in a manuscript suitable for submission to biomedical literature. Graduates of the concentration in Epidemiology are prepared to enter careers in epidemiologic, clinical, or health services research or health administration
The Concentration in Global Health track educates students in the development and management of effective global health initiatives to contribute to sound public health policies and practices and to engage in partnerships with their communities. In addition to core public health coursework (Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Social and Behavioral Science, Environmental Science, and Health Services Administration) coursework includes Foundations of Global Health, Essential Skills in Global Health, Leadership, Policy and Management in Global Health, and Global Health Ethics. As part of the required 400-hour public health practicum, students in the Global Health track may work in an international low-resource setting, or with international populations in the US.
The Health Policy Track analyzes how changes to public health policy and financing have influenced delivery of service, health care spending, quality of care, and access to health care services. Coursework prepares students for health policy leadership positions in the public and private sectors serving in a wide range of roles including analysts, consultants, and policymakers. In addition to the core public health coursework, courses include U.S. Health Policy, Health Economics, Research Ethics, and Decision Analysis. As part of the required 240-hour public health practicum, students in the Health Policy track may work in a number of settings such as hospitals, managed care, consulting firms, advocacy, non-governmental agencies, public health departments, or local, state, and federal agencies. A required Master’s Thesis allows students to utilize and integrate knowledge from their coursework and practicum experiences.
Medical Doctor/Master of Public Health
The Vanderbilt University School of Medicine offer students a five-year MD/MPH dual degree program for those students who want to understand and address health issues on a population level. MD/MPH students have the opportunity to gain the research skills required to participate in academic research. Students must apply separately to the MD and the MPH Programs to be accepted by both programs to pursue the dual degree. The MPH degree requires 42 credits including a practicum experience and thesis research. The required course work can be completed in three academic terms: fall, spring, and summer. Courses dedicated to independent work on the public health practicum and thesis are completed in the summer term. Medical students may apply for admission to the joint degree program at any time during their first three years in the medical school.
