Master of Public Administration

The 60-credit Master of Public Administration (MPA) program at Wagner requires students to complete five “school-wide core courses”. Students are required to fulfill the requirements for a specialization and complete elective courses as dictated by their unique area of specialization. In addition, MPA students are required to complete a capstone course within their MPA concentration. The year-long capstone includes a consulting or research project beginning in the fall semester and continues to the end of spring. The MPA specializations at NYU Wagner are divided into four categories including: Management, Public Policy, Finance and International Policy. After choosing specialization category, students complete 12 core credits in that category and 8 elective credits.

Master of Public Administration in Public and Nonprofit Management and Policy

The curriculum required for the Master of Public Administration in Public and Nonprofit Management and Policy (MPA/PNP) prepares students by offering foundational courses in management, finance, policy and international study to enter careers in public health organizations as financial and policy analysts, as public and nonprofit administrators in local, state, and federal governments. The MPA/PNP program allows students to gain the skills and knowledge for critical thinking and ethical action involving public services and the public/nonprofit organizations providing them. Coursework for the program includes research and leadership skills to design, manage, finance, and understand the valuation of public and nonprofit organizations. Students are required to graduate with field experience relevant to their degree program. The program can be completed in as little as two years full time or 3-4 years part time. The International Policy and Management specialization prepares students for the many challenges they will face when implementing complex public service programs and policies in a variety of settings. Coursework allows students exposure to how key international agencies function and the way public and nonprofit institutional structures and managerial processes vary. Students with an interest in Public Service on a global scale gain the skills for analytical and conceptual thinking and solid management skills.

The Finance specialization provides students with the opportunity to study finance from both an internal management perspective and an external policy perspective. The curriculum allows students to analyze economics, budgeting, accounting, capital financing, investment management, debt management and financial statement analysis. Graduates of the program enter careers in a variety of locations including hospital system administrators, director of finance, budget analysts, consultants, grant managers, program auditors, and rating bonds.

The Public Policy Analysis specialization prepares students for roles in policy analysis to develop essential conceptual, analytical and quantitative skills. Coursework for the program studies the theory and methodology of social science to analyze issues of public importance while developing conceptual, analytical and quantitative skills to improve and assess alternative policy responses to public issues and urban problems.

The Management specialization allows students the foundation to manage and lead in organizations globally. The curriculum exposes students to the principle that the public, nonprofit and private sectors are intricately linked, and how managers and leaders in one sector need to understand the demands, opportunities, and constraints of the other sectors.

Master of Public Administration in Health Policy and Management

The Master of Public Administration in Health Policy and Management (MPA/HPM) program shares Wagner’s mission to “educate professionals for public service careers”. The MPA in Health Policy and Management is ranked as the 8th best in the country by US News and World Report.  Students gain exposure to fundamentals in the delivery of healthcare services and the social, cultural, and economic factors influencing health outcomes. Graduates of this program are prepared for careers in management, finance, and policy in a variety of healthcare settings. All MPA students are required to participate in a year long Capstone Program. Students are prepared to enter careers in hospitals, healthcare maintenance organizations, government, managed care systems, and nonprofit and for-profit health.

The Health Services Management specialization provides a core understanding of the challenges of managing in the constantly changing healthcare environment and to be effective managers. Coursework includes design and control in health organizations, management of service operations, the personnel function and human resources management in health settings, information systems, marketing and strategic planning.

The Health Service Financial Management specialization provides training in the skills required to organize and interpret financial information as the basis of decision-making. Specific topics include financial and managerial accounting, financial statements, business plans, budgeting, capital planning, cost accounting, managerial control, and working capital management and payment systems.

The Health Policy Analysis specialization allows students to develop and evaluate and develop the strategies required to improve the performance of the healthcare delivery system. This often takes place in government agencies responsible for the regulation and financing of health services. Policy analysts find careers in organizations providing health care services, nonprofit organizations and professional associations or foundations. Executive Master of Public Administration

The Wagner Graduate School also offers the advanced Executive Master of Public Administration (EMPA) program for those students seeking careers as public service leaders. Executive MPA students can tailor their program by choosing elective courses from several areas of specialization. All students in the Executive MPA program must meet requirements for the program within five years. Students in the EMPA program are rising leaders or in executive careers in diverse backgrounds in the public, nonprofit, and private sectors. While enrolled in this program, students have the benefit of Wagner’s connections throughout New York City and the globe. Students can choose to pursue their degree on a weekday evening schedule (can be completed in less than one year full time or two years part time) or a Saturday schedule that can be completed in less than one year. In 2015, US News and World Report ranked Wagner 5th for Non Profit Management and 2nd in City Management and Urban Policy. Specializations for the executive MPA include:

  1. The EMPA for Public Service Professionals specialization allows students to acquire the skills required leading organizations in addressing global challenges. Students are trained in rigorous methods of management and leadership to develop skills encouraging positive changes in their field. Courses are offered during weekday evenings and daytime courses are also available.
  2. The EMPA for Global Policy Leaders specialization program is offered in conjunction through a joint-degree program with Wagner and the University College London’s School of Public Policy (UCL). This unique partnership is offered as a one year joint Master of Public Administration, Executive program in Global Public Policy and Management (Global EMPA). The Global EMPA program is a full time program that can be completed in one year. Students spend the first semester at Wagner in New York City and the spring semester at UCL in London. Students spend the summer across the globe working on a Capstone project.
  3. The EMPA for Nurse Leaders specialization is designed for Registered nurses who possess a bachelor’s degree and have a position in management roles and have a desire to further their careers. The program may be completed in two years as a part-time program, allowing students to continue their professional work while pursuing their degree. Students complete 30 credits of core course, five electives and a Capstone end event (3 credits).

Bachelor of Arts / Master of Public Administration/h4>

The Wagner School, partnering with several undergrad divisions, offer a combined degree programs for students to earn the Bachelor of Arts and Master of Public Administration (BA/MPA) in less time than pursuing both degrees individually. Students may complete a maximum 28 of the 60 credits required for the graduate degree while they are still undergraduates. Students are required to enroll in the dual degree program while in their bachelor’s program and to apply to the MPA program during their senior year of study. Students who have less the two years of full time work experience must satisfy professional experience requirements once admitted to Wagner. This dual degree program combines the benefits of an undergraduate liberal arts program with a graduate level education.

Master of Public Administration and Master of Public Health

The Master of Public Administration and Master of Public Health (MPA/MPH) dual-degree program combines public service and public health while maintaining a global focus. The dual degree curriculum prepares students for leadership roles in community healthcare settings, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations in the United States and across the world. Students in the dual full-time program, select courses within the MPA (33 credits) and MPH program (36 credits) concurrently and can complete the dual master’s degree program in just three years. Students can also choose a specialization in the Public and Nonprofit Management and Policy program, or the Health Policy and Management program, and concentrate in Global Health Leadership in the MPH curriculum.

Medical Doctor/Master of Public Health

The Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service and the School of Medicine offer a dual degree program allowing students to complete a Medical Doctor degree and a Master of Public Administration (MPH/MD) degree in less time than pursuing each degree separately. The dual degree program is designed to allow those students interested in health management, policy or finance issues and medicine, to pursue an integrated and comprehensive course of study. Students in the program take courses within the MPA (36 credits) and MD program completing the dual-degree program in five years. Students are required to elect a specialization area from Wagner’s Health and Policy Management program. Graduates of the program are prepared with the core knowledge and analytical skills required for complex and changing roles that their careers might span.

Juris Doctor and Master of Public Administration

The Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service and the School of Law offer a program allowing students to simultaneously pursue a Juris Doctor and Master of Public Administration or Master of Urban Planning dual degree in a full-time program. Students pursue 33 credits in the MPA in Public and Nonprofit Management and Policy program and 71 credits in the JD program to complete the requirements of both degrees in four years. Students must also chose a specialization area within the MPA in Public and Nonprofit Management and Policy program or the International Development specialization within the Master of Urban Planning program. Students attend the first two years at the School of Law, the third year at Wagner, and the fourth year taking courses at both Wagner and the School of Law. This means that students are registered at the School of Law for a total of five semesters and at Wagner for a total of three semesters.

Niagara University

The College of Business Administration

Founded in 1856, Niagara University is a Private Catholic University, located in Lewiston New York. The college is best known as a liberal arts school, but also offers programs in technical and pre-professional disciplines. Some important quick facts about this university include:

Master of Business Administration in Healthcare

The Master of Business Administration in Healthcare (MBA) at Niagara University program curriculum provides students with core skills they will need to:

Accelerated Saturday courses are also available, meeting from 9AM to 5PM and are completed every five weeks. Students may register for 1-3 Saturday classes per semester. The degree plan can be completed in either program format in just 16 months. The optional healthcare specialization allows students a rigorous and in-depth understanding of management and its applications in the healthcare industry.

Master of Healthcare Administration

The Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) program at Niagara allows students to gain the skills and knowledge required to work as administrators in varied settings in healthcare organizations including hospitals, nursing homes and physician practices. Students are prepared for careers within community health organizations, healthcare suppliers and as healthcare consultants. The program is offered through the College of Business Administration, and is a good fit for busy working professionals. Students are required to complete 42 credit hour of graduate-level courses, a practicum experience and 24 hours of service within a community health organization.
