Master of Science in Health Information Management

The College of St. Scholastica founded the first Health Information Management (HIM) program in the US in 1935 and continues to be widely respected in the health informatics and information management education. Following the Benedictine values of “community, hospitality, respect, stewardship and the love of learning” the Master of Science (MS) in the HIM program enforces the principles of taking care of others and continues to maintain a national reputation educating students in Health Informatics. The primarily online program allows students to advance Health Information Management by emphasizing quality healthcare data as the foundation for organizational information and knowledge of management systems. The program is available in a distance-learning format allowing professionals to continue in their careers while improving their knowledge and skills. The faculty of the Master’s program are active HIM education, industry and business leaders. A capstone project allows students the opportunity to interact with fellow students, professionals, and faculty. Students in this program can choose from two program options:

  • Sixty credit Credential track, a three-year program, for those who do not have their RHIA credential
  • Forty Credit Advanced track, a two-year program, for those that do have their RHIA credential

Master of Science in Health Informatics

The Master of Science (MS) in Health Informatics program prepares students for careers in clinical and medical fields using information technology in helping people manage their health. In the information age, healthcare professionals depend on healthcare informatics to store, retrieve, and process medical data. The program focuses on the resources, devices, and methods needed in the acquisition, storage, retrieval, and use of information in health and biomedicine. Commonly used tools in Health Informatics include computers, clinical guidelines, medical terminologies, and information and communication systems.
