The eighty credit hour Master of Science in Biostatistics (MSB) degree program offers students competency in the basics of statistical theory; bio statistical and bioinformatics methods in planning studies, conducting analyses, and writing reports; the interpretation of numerical data for scientific inference in studies in medicine and public health; and the ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with scientists in related disciplines. To complete the Master’s Program, students must complete fifty credits in courses from the Master’s Degree Program core courses including probability, statistical inference, statistical methods, linear and logistic regression, survival analysis, longitudinal analysis, clinical trials, bioinformatics, statistical genetics, health decision sciences, and related areas. Students will also have the opportunity to choose a specific area of interest in biostatistics or bioinformatics and fulfill requirements for that chosen area. Students also may choose from a variety of elective courses.
Master of Science in Computational Biology and Quantitative Genetics
The Master of Science in Computational Biology and Quantitative Genetics Degree (MSCBQG) prepares students for careers as bioinformatics analysts or bioinformatics engineers in universities and hospitals, research organizations, and the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. Students are engaged in quantitative training and the required skills and knowledge to meet the challenges of large-scale public health data (Big Data) in biomedical research. The eighty credit hour Masters program is offered by both the Departments of Biostatistics and Epidemiology and provides students with:

Master of Science in Environmental Health
The Department of Environmental Health (EH) at Harvard’s School of Public Health believes that the core of public health is prevention of disease and its sole mission is contributing to maintenance and improvement of health for all people by using global leadership in research and training in environmental health. The Environmental Health Program identifies the key elements that represent environmental health sciences and students are required to take courses in human physiology and toxicology, exposure assessment, environmental and occupational epidemiology, and risk assessment. Students also have opportunities for research, concentrated course work, practical experience and exploration in related areas of study. At completion of the program all students are required to have competency in each of the three areas of focus in their research including:
- Exposure Assessment emphasizing the physical, microbial, chemical and engineering areas of occupational and environmental exposure
- Risk Assessment integrating evidence from exposure assessment, toxicology, epidemiology and other areas of study to make informed policy decisions
- Environmental Epidemiology focusing on the identification and measurement the influence of physical, chemical, and biological environmental factors and the effects on human disease in communities to provide scientific evidence for sound environmental and health policies.
Graduates of the program have entered careers in private industry, government as well as in research organizations.
The Master of Science in Epidemiology is an eighty-credit hour Master’s Degree Program generally completed over the course of two academic years. Those entering the program are required to have a Bachelor’s level degree and a Thesis is required for completion of the program. Learning outcomes for the program include the student’s abilities to include:
- Basic skills in the core public health science of epidemiology and biostatistics
- Have a basic comprehension of the role of epidemiology in public health and clinical medicine providing a quantitative approach in addressing public health and clinical problems.
- Interpret epidemiological results to provide hypothesis of risk factors for disease
- Background to evaluate public health and medical literature via knowledge of the basic principles and methods of epidemiology, including outcome of disease measures, study design, bias, confounding, and effect measure modification.
- Use quantitative methods in analyzing and using epidemiological data as related to issues in public health
- Development of quantitative skills necessary in analyzing and synthesizing epidemiologic data
- Applying the knowledge of human disease to epidemiological study
- Gain the skill in interpreting methods for disease screening
- Substantive knowledge of the epidemiology of infectious and chronic disease in addressing public health issues
- Design an epidemiologic investigation (Master’s Thesis) resulting in a publishable manuscript or grant application.
Master of Science in Global Health and Population
The Master of Science in Global Health and Population program allows students the skills and knowledge to improve global health through education, research, and service from a population- based perspective. Current global health is faced with a complex set of demographic patterns, disease burdens, and health policies. In attempting to find solutions to these complex problems, students in this program will attain the medical science base knowledge needed for analyzing, understanding and solving worldwide health issues. Students learn the methods needed to address global disease and finding solutions for preventing global health crisis. Using basic concepts of global medicine, students will address issues such as malaria, tuberculosis, tropical diseases, HIV / AIDS, and mother and child health. Master of Public Health in Epidemiology (Online)
The Master of Public Health in Epidemiology is a two-year part-time Master’s Degree Program that combines online, traditional on campus learning styles. Students are given in-the-field learning that provides future public health and healthcare professionals with the research and epidemiological skills required to further their careers. One-third of the credits are completed on campus at the Harvard School of Public Heath and the remaining two-thirds taken as a combination of online coursework and field-based experiences. The program is structured as follows:
- On campus at Harvard – three week long sessions at the beginning, middle and end of program
- Online courses linking Harvard faculty and students in live classroom discussion, interactive coursework, modular video sessions and cased based study (ten to twelve hours per week for most students)
- Field Work in which Students complete a yearlong practicum with a capstone project and presentation.

The Master of Public Health (MPH) degree is the most widely recognized professional degree for leadership in public health. Master of Science in Health Care Management
The Master of Science in Health Care Management provides the skills to physicians who have leadership positions in Health Care Organizations. With the Healthcare Field becoming competitive with emphasis on financial solubility, Healthcare providers are being forced to become more involved in the management of the Healthcare delivery as well a managing patients. Physicians in management roles will deal with the challenge of balancing the financial and competition issues combined with the traditional patient care within their organizations. These issues will force them to attain managing and organizational skills to meet these demands. This Master’s Degree Program is designed to be flexible to meet a Physicians demanding schedules with a part time two year curriculum with three weeks per summer required and five four day weekends per year. There is also an average fifteen hours per week off campus work including worksite projects. All classes take place on the Longwood Campus at Harvard University in Boston.
