Master of Public Health
The Master of Public Health (MPH) degree is a joint program through the University of Toledo and Bowling Green State University offered in conjunction with the Northwest Ohio Consortium for Public Health. Graduates of the Master of Public Health degree are prepared for careers in government agencies, nonprofit organizations, hospitals, manufacturing companies, and schools. There are five majors offered through the Master in Public Health (MPH) degree to allow students the ability to specify their degree to meet their career goals including:
Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety Science: The focus of the Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety Science concentration is a study of the technical, scientific and regulatory. Characteristics of public health and their relationship in assessing and controlling of hazards including physical, chemical and biological agents in non-occupational and occupational environments. Other areas of coursework include Emergency and disaster planning, preparation, and response.
Health Promotion and Education: The Health Promotion and Education concentration provides students with the knowledge in implementing, administering and evaluating health promotion and education programs to assess individual and community needs. Students in the program are prepared for careers in planning, health promotion, health education, disease prevention, and social action. Graduates enter careers in business, non-profit and governmental agencies at the local, county, state and federal levels.
Public Health Administration: The Public Health Administration concentration prepares graduates to pursue administrative careers in healthcare agencies, government, community organizations, and private industry.
Public Health Epidemiology: The Public Health Epidemiology concentration prepares graduates to enter careers in the study and distribution of disease in diverse groups via population-based study. Quantitative skills (including biostatistics and computer applications) are key to the program. Public Health Epidemiologists work with other professionals including physicians, environmental health personnel, behavior scientists, demographers, biostatisticians and administrators of health agencies in local, state and federal governments, healthcare organizations, private industry, and academia.
Medical Doctor/Master of Public Health
The Medical Doctor and Master of Public Health (MD/MPH) are offered as a dual degree program in conjunction with the University of Toledo Department of Public Health and the residency program at Preventative Medicine designed for Emergency Medicine Resident. Coursework specific to Emergency Physicians include: Disaster Medicine, Theory and Practice, Practicum in Disaster Management, Topics in Global Health, Overview of Infectious Diseases of Developing Countries, Pandemic 101, and Medical Consequences of Terrorism. The MD/MPH program accommodates the specific needs of the resident allowing them to graduate from the residency program with the MPH degree.
Juris Doctor/Master of Public Health
This degree combination combines a law degree with a Master of Public Health. Graduates have a JD and an MPH. The College of Law at the University of Toledo will work closely with students to accommodate interdisciplinary studies.
