With the increasing demand for quality healthcare executives and managers, several Universities and Colleges in Illinois provide top quality accredited Master’s Level Healthcare Management programs. According to the latest employment report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Employment in the U.S. healthcare sector has steadily continued to rise and Medical and Healthcare service managers held about 315,500 jobs in 2012. The department offers a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree with concentration on Health Education and Masters of Recreation, with the ability to choose from three areas of specific concentration.

Master of Public health

Graduates of the Master of Public Health (MPH) program are prepared to address current issues and problems within the public health field with an evidence based approach evaluating programs that are effective, analyzing public health information, and creating solutions to issues in public health. Students of the MPH program will have the skills and competency to:

  • Identify the causes and origins of disease
  • Prioritize health needs in the public by understanding the patterns of disease within the community
  • Using a systematic approach to design, implement and assess public health policies, programs and services
  • Effective Communication in order to promote health in the community with emphasis on the poor, underserved and at risk
  • Evaluate data for identification purposes and to resolve problems public health
  • Ability to work alone or as a team, demonstrating effective leadership qualities
  • Decision making that exhibits proper respect for the values, beliefs, and practices within diverse communities and cultures
  • Possess effective practice in your selected field of study

With a graduate degree in public health, students may work in a variety of sectors and specialties, including health services administration, nutrition and international health.

Doctor of Philosophy/Master of Public Health

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Social Work and a Master of Public Health (MPH) dual degree prepares social workers for administrative, policy, and academic positions in the public health system. The program allows the student competency in a wide range of health issues within the public health system while maintaining a “public health approach” to maternal and child health issues including:

  • Concentration on populations at risk as opposed to individual approach
  • Using an interdisciplinary approach
  • Focus on preventing social and health problems
  • Proper use of systematic data collection and analyzing administrative decision making

Students will earn the concurrent PhD/MPH in with a concentration in Health Education. It is a highly competitive program and only one or two students will be selected to enter the program. Graduates earn an MPH in Community Health Education and a PhD in Education with a concentration in health education. This dual degree program is offered in a full-time program only for those students who aspire to teach at the university level.

Medical Doctor/Master of Public Health

The Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Master of Public Health (MPH) are both graduate level healthcare degrees, but each has a separate focus. If you become an MD, typically graduates will go on to work as a physician, managing individual patients and their medical needs while an MPH prepares students to work in various public health roles with a focus on the health issues facing specific groups of people or the public. The dual MD/MPH degree allow the combination of medical and public health training. The principles of preventive medicine, public health and health policy are growing in priority in healthcare. Future physicians will need a better understanding of the roles these factors play in individual’s health. The program generally requires five years for completion and to enroll in the M.D./M.P.H. program students are required to first meet the admission requirements established by the School of Medicine and the Graduate School.

University of Illinois at Chicago

School of Public Health

Located on Chicago’s west side, The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) is a public research university and the second campus established in the University of Illinois System. It is the largest university in Chicago and has an enrollment of over 28,000 students through fifteen colleges. Master of Health Administration

The School of Public Health (SPH) in conjunction with the College of Business Administration (CBA) offer a two year Master of Health Administration (MHA) program for those who aspire to shape the direction of healthcare organizations. The MHA degree program allow students who are pursuing careers in Healthcare Management to gain the competency in management with an extensive knowledge of healthcare and issues faced as a executive manager. Core competencies for the Master’s program emphasize economics, informatics, human resources finance, accounting, marketing and general management. Designed for the students choosing a career in managing within healthcare services, graduates are prepared to work in healthcare settings including:

Each student must complete an internship with local hospitals, long term care facilities or ambulatory care centers for experience and job exposure

Master of Science in Health Informatics

Health Informatics is the science of healthcare and its related information, including clinical care, financial, Information Technology and enterprise management. The completion of the Master of Science in Health Informatics (MSHI) will prepare students to enter executive or management positions as health information systems specialists, health data analysts, managers and consultants in health information technology organizations, Healthcare service organizations and public health entities. Coursework will allow the competency to be familiar with emerging technologies while prepared to analyze, design and manage health information systems. By pursuing a Master’s degree online, students are allowed the flexibility to work toward their educational goals while employed in careers. The program requires a minimum of forty-five Semester hours.

Master of Publics Health

The Master of Public Health (MPH) program at School of Public Health at UIC prepares students for broad-based practice in public health with core competencies in the five areas of knowledge basic to public health. The program allows those currently employed in careers as well as those choosing to become full time students preparing for a career in public health. The MPH degree program requires a minimum of 45 credit hours and is offered on both a full-and part-time basis. Students of the program matriculate into one of four divisions at the School of Public Health:

  • Community Health Sciences
  • Epidemiology and Biostatistics
  • Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences
  • Health Policy and Administration.

In addition MPH students can choose a focus through an interdepartmental concentrations, or through a chose of a joint or online program.

Master of Science in Public Health

The University of Illinois at Chicago offers a Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) degree to provide students with a general understanding of public health and expertise in specialized research. Students can choose from five areas of concentration:

The College of Business Administration and the School of Public Health at UIC offer a joint Master of Business Administration and Master of Public Health degree program. The MBA/MPH joint degree are offered by each of the following:

The program is available in a Full-time traditional curriculum as well as part time for those already pursuing career in Public Health.
