Master of Public Health

The Master of Public Health (MPH) degree is designed for students aspiring to professional leadership careers in the ever-changing and expanding field of public health. The Master’s Degree Program includes Loyola’s Jesuit tradition for social justice, as students become advocates for positive social change. The MPH degree program provides a program for professionals who want to strengthen their knowledge and skills in public health. The program was developed to enhance a competent public health workforce that is able to advance the well being of the citizens of Illinois. Graduates of the MPH program gain the knowledge and skills to promote core functions of public health, including the prevention of epidemics and spread of disease, protection from hazards in the environmental, injury prevention, promoting of positive health behaviors, disasters response and assistance in communities, and quality and accessibility to quality of health services. The program has twenty-two available tracks for specialization with the MPH. The Loyola MPH Program currently offers three concentrations:

  • Health Policy and Law – The forty-four credit hour Health Policy and Law program is based at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine and provides students with the competency and knowledge to address health policy and law with an emphasis on racial and economic health disparities and bioethics. Graduates will gain skills for analyzing public health setting that include health-care administration, bioethics, nursing, pastoral care, patient advocacy, medical social work, medical research, the insurance. The curriculum focuses on law and public health, healthcare administration, epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health, ethics and social and behavioral health.
  • Public Health Policy and Management – This program focuses on improving health for the population through legislation, advocacy, health services research, and health care management. It is available in an online only format or can be completed in conjunction with campus courses. Coursework includes courses in politics, epidemiology, ethics, economics, law, and management. Students in this program are provided with concepts, methods, and practical experience to address pressing issues in public health policy and management with experience in addressing current issues in public health policy and management. Area of employment for Graduates include: government health and research agencies, healthcare provider systems, non-profit community health agencies, health advocacy groups, international health care agencies and medical professional membership organizations. Employment paths for those graduating with 
a Public Health Policy and Management degree include health service provider systems, government health and research agencies, non-profit community health agencies, health advocacy associations, public policy research institutes, international health care agencies, and professional membership organizations.
  • The Chicago based forty-four credit hour MPH degree in Epidemiology provides students with the skills required entering careers in clinical and public health research. The MPH Program in Epidemiology combines twenty-four credits of evening coursework with up twenty credits of online coursework order to optimize the marketability of our students.

The Loyola MPH Program in Epidemiology work one-on-one with a practicing researcher to obtain practical training in research methods. The MPH Program in Epidemiology is multi-disciplinary with coursework taught from a variety of disciplines within the framework of public health.

Concurrent – Doctor of Medicine / Master of Public Health Dual Degree

The Loyola University Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Master of Public Health (MPH) dual degree program trains physician researchers and physician practitioners to be future leaders for the combination of medicine and public health. These two programs complement each other, as the focus for medicine is caring and healing individual patients, while public health addresses prevention in populations.

 Public Health Policy and Management: Improving population health through legislation, advocacy, health services research, and health care management. Students must complete thirty-eight credit hours for MPH students; six additional hours provide credit for both MD & MPH. Graduates of the program can apply for residency programs that have a health services, clinical research, health disparities, or prevention focus. Graduates are pursuing careers government, advocacy, or public health settings will have the skills and experience to become leaders in these fields. The dual degree program generally takes five years to complete.
