Master’s in Healthcare Management Degrees in Florida – US – UZ

According to The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Handbook, over 60,000 new job opportunities will be available for those educated as Medical and Healthcare Managers in the next ten years. With so much potential growth, more and more of Floridas many colleges and universities are offering Master’s Level Degree options in Healthcare Management, Healthcare Administration and Public Health. Many of these academic institutions are offering these graduate degrees in either a fully online, or hybrid learning environment. This allows students the flexibility of working toward their degree while continuing to work in the field.

University of South Florida

The Department of Heath Policy and Management

Located in Tampa Florida, The University of South Florida (USF) is the fourth largest public university in the state of Florida, with a total enrollment of close to 50,000 students for the 2012–2013 academic year. USF is home to fourteen colleges with over eighty undergraduate majors and more the 130 graduate, specialist and doctoral degree programs. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching ranks USF in the top tier of research universities. US News and World Report for 2012 ranks USF in the top 100 best public schools and also eighth among “up and coming universities”. Concurrent Degree – Master of Health Administration and Master of Public Health

The University of South Florida provides a dual Master’s level degree in both Health Administration and Health Policy. Upon completion of the program, students receive a Master of Health Administration (MHA) and a Master of Public Health (MPH) Degree. The MPH/MHA dual degree program allows an option of earning an MHA degree in addition to a Master of Public Health with concentration in Health Policy & Programs designed for students planning a career in public health with a focus on population health. The purpose of the dual degree program is preparation for student’s success in the healthcare/medical industry providing essential business knowledge, skills and industry-specific knowledge. The program is designed for completion in three years and can be pursued either full time or part time to suit each students educational needs. This degree program can lead to careers in health services administration, health policy, biostatistics, epidemiology, health education/behavioral science, environmental health, international health, public health practice and program management.

Master in Public Health

The Master of Public Health (MPH) is a multi-disciplinary degree for students to pursue employment in areas related to public health in the private and public sector of healthcare. The MPH program emphasizes public health practice. Students develop competency in Communication and Informatics, Diversity and Culture, Leadership, Professionalism, Program Planning and Biology of Public Health. Core Courses include biostatistics, epidemiology, health policy and management, environmental and occupational health, and social and behavioral sciences. In addition students can take one of several concentrations including: biostatistics, epidemiology, health care organizations and management, policy and programs, environmental health, toxicology and risk assessment, safety management, occupational health, global communicable disease, maternal and child health, health education, behavioral health, public health practice, global health or socio-health sciences. The MPH degree requires forty-two semester credit hours and concentrations require additional credit hours.

The Public Health Degree Program offers students an array of career options working along with other health professional’s to address issues from healthcare in the community to policy making effecting entire societies. With emphasis on promoting health and preventing disease the MPH is a foundation for understanding health and healthcare in the United States and globally.

Master of Health Administration

A Master of Health Administration (MHA) prepares students for the healthcare industry by offering coursework that provides the knowledge and competency required for health administration careers, including management of hospitals and other health services organizations. Course emphasis is on population health, healthcare economics, health policy, management of healthcare organizations, healthcare marketing and communications, human resource management, managing and assessing information systems, leadership, statistical and financial analysis and application. Graduates are prepared for senior management positions as health administrator at local, state and federal levels as well as in non-profit sector.

The MHA requires 58 semester credit hours plus experience in the field. Core competencies for the MHA program are:

  • Management Science and Technology
  • Strategy and Leadership
  • Public Policies and Community Orientation
  • Economics and Financial Management

Master of Science in Public Health

A Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) degree focus is on the improvement and protection of the health of populations through research design, data collection, analysis and application of research in public health. Students are prepared for research roles in careers in public health using principles of epidemiological and bio statistical methods. The MSPH s an academic public health degree rather than a professional public health degree, being more research-oriented in its goal. The MSPH involves course work in biostatistics and epidemiology and choice of one additional core course. Students can take a specialized concentration in one of the following areas:

  • Socio-health sciences
  • Health education
  • Maternal and child health
  • Behavioral health
  • Health care organizations and management
  • Health policies and programs,
  • Environmental health, toxicology/risk assessment
  • Global communicable disease
  • Epidemiology
  • Biostatistics.

The MSPH degree requires a minimum of 42 credit hours.

The School of Social Work and The College of Public Health

The University of South Florida, also known as USF, is a member institution of the State University System of Florida and a public research university located in Tampa, Florida. The Master of Social Work – Master of Public Health (MSW/MPH) program is a collaborative effort between the School of Social Work and College of Public Health. Students, who are seeking an MSW/MPH dual-degree, study in both social work and public health for a well-balanced approach at the individual, family, community, and national or global level. The clinical skills in social work with the core knowledge of public health such as biostatistics, epidemiology, and health management and evaluation can help allow students the skills to meet the needs of both individuals and communities they serve. In addition, the University of South Florida dual degree program offers the following concentration areas to further combine the Social Work Program and Public Health Program:
• The Master of Public Health with a Maternal and Child Health (MCH) – This area of concentration seeks to prepare health professionals and others in related fields for leadership in community organizations focusing on major women’s public health problems, children and families, focusing on the culturally diverse and the underserved in the population. Students learn approaches to address health inequalities, and focus on promoting health and preventing disease among those in need within the population. Areas of emphasis include: child health, women’s health, childhood injury, family and community violence and children with special needs. Prime area of focus is women of childbearing years and children from prenatal to 21 and include infant mortality and low birth weight, women’s health, early child intervention programs, handicapping conditions, child abuse and neglect, family violence and unintentional injury and adolescent health.

• The MPH with a Behavioral Health (BH) Concentration educated students so they may have a better understanding of mental and substance disorders in community populations they will serve. Areas of emphasis include children’s mental health services, community-based prevention, evaluation and accountability, evidence-based practice in behavioral health, homelessness, multi-cultural issues in mental health, and epidemiologic issues in mental disorders, including co-occurring disorders.

University of West Florida

The College of Professional Studies

Located in Pensacola Florida, the University of West Florida (UWF) is a mid size public university and member institution of the State University System of Florida. It is the third largest campus in the State University System and is a research university without faculties of medicine or law. UWF has forty-five undergraduate degree programs and master’s degrees in twenty-five different programs with more than 50 academic specializations. With an enrollment of more than 12,000 students for the 2013-2014 calendar year, UWF offers more than 200 fully online courses to suit the educational needs of non-traditional students who could not otherwise pursue degrees.

The faculty in the College of Professional Studies helped to create the “Emerge Initiative”. This program was developed to help faculty design and utilize High Impact Practices (HIPs). By utilizing a combination of techniques and skills that have been proven to widen student learning outcomes and academic engagement, these HIPs raise levels of student performance, overall retention and success for all students. Master of Public Health

The Master of Public Health (MPH) Degree at University of West Florida is offered as an entirely online program to prepare students to become public health professionals. The required and elective courses offer students the opportunity to tailor their degree to best fit their career goals in public health. The MPH is allied with several academic centers/certificate programs that broaden the educational opportunities available to students in the program. The university maintains working relationships with area hospitals, state public health organizations and the military to provide internships for students in the program. The Council on Education for public Health (CEPH) lists the MPH at The College of Professional Studies as an example of best practice for online programs in public health. Master of Science in Administration – Healthcare Administration

The Master of Science in Administration (MSA) Degree prepares students for administrative leadership roles in public, non-profit, and private agencies. The MSA with specialization in Health Care Administration is offered entirely online and designed to prepare students for leadership roles in public, nonprofit and private organizations in health care administration. The program can be completed in as little as four semesters. The MSA program offers working professionals a program to expand their administrative skills in managing within healthcare organizations.
