Master of Health Administration

Kaplan University’s fifty credit hour fully online Master’s Degree program in Healthcare Administration (MHA) prepares students for leadership and management positions in governmental, nonprofit, and private organizations in the healthcare system. Coursework includes economics, ethics, professional standards, healthcare administration laws, procedures to develop policies and programs addressing concerns in the healthcare industry concerns. With a focus on health administration at the local, state, and federal level as well as in the nonprofit sector, the program can be completed in as little as eighteen months on a full-time basis. Master of Public Administration

The fifty-five credit hour Master of Public Administration (MPA) provides students coursework for the skills needed to evaluate, implement, and manage policies of public administration and management, ethics and leadership, budgeting and the administration of public funds, strategic planning, and applied research. The program offers flexibility to pursue a general Master of Public Administration or an MPA with a concentration in Healthcare Management, Governmental Management, Fire Science and Emergency Services or Criminal justice. The Master of Public Administration Program emphasizes:

Master of Public Health

Kaplan University’s online, sixty credit hour Master of Public Health (MPH) degree program offers students a curriculum created to develop administrative, ethical, and professional skills to apply public health principles to health education and communication programs. With completion of the program in as little as two years (on a full-time basis) graduates will be able to:

  • Apply an evidence-based approach to public health practice.
  • Apply fundamental concepts of epidemiology to address population health problems.
  • Assess current and relevant health issues and policies.
  • Implement skills in leadership, administrative, and communication through the planning, organization, administration, and evaluation of public health programs.
  • Ability to evaluate concepts and methods of social and behavioral sciences in application to identifying and solving public health problems.

To gain real-world insight, students are required to complete a capstone fieldwork experience.

Master of Business Administration

The Master of Business Administration (MBA) program builds the skills to enable graduates to make sound business and management decisions. The Master’s Degree program provides training in business for students in the working nature of business in a competitive environment. Coursework includes basis and theory from multi-disciplines including accounting, economics, finance, marketing, production operations, and strategic management.  A capstone experience required to complete the MBA degree allows students the experience to use the theories, skills, and tools obtained during the program and apply them to future careers in business. The MBA takes a minimum of fifteen terms to complete online with a total of sixty core credits and sixteen credits available for specialization including:

  • Health Policy emphasis provides perspective on quality operations and management in Healthcare as it applies to organizational behavior and health management research.
  • Healthcare Marketing for analysis of the healthcare policies and their development in the current healthcare system.
  • International Epidemiology and Global Health concentration allows students the ability to analyze and evaluate marketing concepts in their application to Healthcare Organizations.
  • Healthcare Operations and Quality Assessment specialization provides students an introduction into current trends in global health and international health problems to examines economic, population, and socio­political trends on health and living conditions in a global population.

The College of Public Health

Located in Iowa City, the University of Iowa (also known as UI, or simply Iowa) is a public research university founded in 1847. Considered a Public Ivy, UI is the oldest university in the state. The university includes the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, one of the nation’s largest academic medical centers and named one of “America’s Best Hospitals” for the 23rd year in a row. With just over 30,000 students currently enrolled, the University of Iowa is one of the nation’s top public research universities and is known for its commitment to the arts, sciences, and humanities.

Master of Public Health

As the primary professional degree in the field of Public Health, The Master of Public (MPH) degree provides a quality education for training in public health to become professional leaders in their communities. The MPH degree requires forty-two to forty-five credit hours and students must choose one of seven sub-tracks:

  • Community and Behavioral health
  • Epidemiology
  • Ergonomics
  • Health Communication
  • Occupations and Environmental Health
  • Policy
  • Quantitative methods

Requirements for the MPH degree include a core course in public health practice, epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health, health policy and management, and social and behavioral sciences. A practicum is also required. Students in the epidemiology, occupational and environmental health sub-tracks are also required to complete a course in bioscience.

Students may earn the MPH as a single degree, or pursue one of several concurrent degree programs. The College of Public Health offers a joint degree in the following programs:

  • The Master of Public Health/Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (MPH/DVM) combined degree allows students in the DVM program at Iowa State University to work concurrently toward an MPH degree. This program was developed to respond to the critical need nationally for trained veterinary professionals with advanced training related to zoonotic diseases, food safety, emergency preparedness, and public health. The dual degree program is one of the first in the US to enable students to obtain both degrees concurrently.
  • Master of Public Health/Juris Doctor (MPH/JD) Combined Degree prepares students in this combined program upon graduation to serve as public health professionals with preparation and competency dealing with the legal and policy issues or as a lawyer specialized in Healthcare issues in a public health setting.
  • Medical Doctor/Master of Public Health (MD/MPH) dual degree provides students who are already pursuing the MD degree the opportunity to concurrently pursue a degree in public health. The degree is offered with the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine to allow candidates to expand career opportunities to allow professionals the ability to apply the principles of both medicine and public health for bettering the public at large.
  • Master of Public Health/Doctor of Pharmacy (MPH/Pharm.D.) dual degree program is offered by the College of Pharmacy and the College of Public Health. The joint degree requires 42 graduate credit hours in addition to the requirements of the Pharm.D. degree. Students who complete the program are granted both degrees. Students of the program develop expertise in public health pharmacotherapy, health promotion, disease prevention, and medication safety. Career opportunities include pharmacy and public health, community health, and immunology; bioterrorism, terrorism, and preparedness; genetics; insurance; managed care; family and infant health; and protection of special populations.

Master of Health Administration

The sixty-four credit hour Master of Health Administration (MHA) program prepares students for executive positions in healthcare management. The program provides an in-depth understanding of issues within health care delivery organizations with strong business skills. Graduates will be able to enter senior executive roles in healthcare organizations. Required courses include management, economics, law, managerial finance, and financial accounting focus on health care applications. Students of the MHA program are required to have summer internships between the first and second years of study to allow opportunities for practical experience. Internships are full-time positions lasting ten to twelve weeks.

Tippee College of Business

The Tippie College of Business at the University of Iowa was established in 1921 and is one of the top-ranked business schools in the United States. The School of Management prepares students for careers in a global marketplace and offers a traditional MBA in an on-campus format. The College offers several MBA programs and the MBA program consistently ranks near the top of the Forbes Magazine listing of fastest payback on an MBA degree.  It is also among the top twenty programs at a public university by The Economist. Master of Business Administration/Master of Health Administration

The Department of Health Management and Policy offers joint degree programs with the Tippie College of Business for a Master of Business Administration and Master of Health Administration (MBA/MHA) program. Students are provided a foundation in professional management with analytical skills, knowledge, leadership, and applied experiences. The joint MBA/MHA degree program requires a minimum of seventy-five graduate credit hours and combines the strengths of health management and policy with coursework in management. Applicants must be admitted to both programs before they may be admitted to the joint degree program.
