Graduate Student Scholarship

The Foundation of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) established this scholarship in honor of Albert W. Dent, the first African-American Fellow of ACHE. The goal of this scholarship is to provide financial aid to minority students pursuing a career in healthcare management at the graduate level. The scholarship is designated for minority students enrolled in their final year of a healthcare management graduate program. In order to be considered for this scholarship a student must fulfill the following:

#2 The Bachrach Family Scholarship for Excellence in Health Care Administration

In order to apply for this scholarship, students must be enrolled in a graduate program in Healthcare Administration and have a current academic standing of a 3.0 GPA or better. #3 Bill and Mary Russell Scholarship

The Bill and Mary Russell Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance for those pursuing educational opportunities toward a career in nursing or a health care field (clinical or patient care). At least fifty percent of the awarded funds will support nursing scholarships. Remaining funds will be awarded to those pursuing educational opportunities in other clinical or patient care programs. #4 Campus Safety, Health, and Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA) Scholarship Award

The Campus Safety, Health, and Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA) offers an annual scholarship in the amount of $2,000 to encourage the study of environmental and occupational health, safety, and related disciplines. The program is open to all college undergraduate and graduate students in all majors/disciplines enrolled in 12 credit hours per semester. #5 Corris Boyd Scholars Program

The Corris Boyd Scholars Program was established in honor of a healthcare leader who dedicated his life to diversity and excellence in leadership – especially among people of color. Recipients of this award will receive a $40,000 scholarship towards tuition and other expenses at an AUPHA accredited graduate school program of choice. The award will be paid in four installments (August, December, August and December). At the time of award, applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:
• Have applied and been accepted into an AUPHA Full Member Master’s Degree Program for start in the Fall semester (not before August 1)

#6 David A. Winston Health Policy Scholarship

The goal of the David A. Winston Health Policy Scholarship is to help promote high quality individuals trained in healthcare policy at the state and federal level. By awarding health policy students with financial support to further their education, this scholarship program can help create more healthcare professionals in the field. The scholarship recognizes student performance and achievement based upon the student’s academic record, recommendations from faculty and colleagues, as well as a strong interest in and commitment to health policy. Ten scholarships will be awarded to students who demonstrate strong potential to succeed in in the field of healthcare upon graduation from their Master’s of Health Administration (MHA) or Health Policy Degree Program.

Eligibility Criteria:
• This scholarship is open to current first year graduate students in their second full-time equivalent semester or third full-time equivalent quarter studying at any AUPHA member graduate program or affiliated health policy program.
• Applicants must be scheduled to complete the didactic portion of their degree not later than December.
• U.S. citizenship is required.
• Scholars are selected based on expressed and demonstrated commitment to health policy, leadership, academic achievement, community involvement and long term career interest in health policy.

#7 The Elliott C. Roberts Scholarship

The Elliott C. #8 Foster G. McGaw Graduate Student Scholarship

The Foundation of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) founded the Foster G. McGaw Scholarship to honor the founder of the American Hospital Supply Corporation. This scholarship offers recipients financial aid assistance in a healthcare management graduate program, in order to offset tuition costs, student loans and expenses. In order to be considered for this scholarship a student must fulfill the following:

• You are a minority student enrolled in your final year (fall/spring) of full-time study in a healthcare management graduate program—MHA, MPH, MBA in Healthcare Administration or similar.

#9 The Gates Millennium Scholars Program

The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) Program selects 1,000 talented students each year to receive a “good-through-graduation” scholarship to use at any college or university of their choice. The GMS Program is fully funded through a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The goal of this program is to provide outstanding African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American and Hispanic American students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education in any discipline area of interest. Continuing Gates Millennium Scholars may request funding for a graduate degree program in one of the following discipline areas: computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health or science.

#10 Harry J. Harwick Scholarship

The Harry J. Harwick Scholarship was created for students in a graduate program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME) or an undergraduate program that is a member of the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA). Each applicant must submit a letter outlining their career goals and objectives, a resume including employment history with a narrative describing employment responsibilities in the health care field, and three letters of recommendation. #11 Healthcare Information Management Systems Scholarship

Healthcare Information Management Systems (HIMSS) is a global, cause-based, not-for-profit organization with a goal on providing more efficient health through more effective information technology. The HIMSS Scholarship is awarded to one currently enrolled undergraduate student, one master’s level student and one doctoral level student. Recipients will be awarded $5,000 and an all-expense paid trip to the Awards Banquet at the Annual HIMSS Conference. One of the most widely known scholarships for students in the field of medical practice management is the regional scholarship awarded by the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA). #18 National Association of Health Services Executives Scholarships

The National Association of Health Services Executives (NAHSE) sponsors a set of three annual scholarships. The awards go to African American graduate students in the field of health services. The goal of these scholarships is to help diversifying the profession of health services. Each scholarship is worth $2,500, and recipients are invited to attend the group’s annual conference without cost. The three scholarships included are:

• The Haynes Rice Award is bestowed by NAHSE to outstanding graduate students who are striving to become future leaders in healthcare management and NAHSE.
• The Florence Gaynor Award was established to recognize outstanding achievements among female graduate students who are striving to become future leaders in healthcare management and NAHSE.
• The Ellis Bonner Award is a special category to recognize the distinguished leadership and academic achievement among non-traditional graduate students who are striving to become future leaders in healthcare management and NAHSE.

In order to be eligible for these scholarships, students must fulfill the following criteria:

• Applicant must be either enrolled or accepted in an accredited college or university program, pursuing a Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, or Doctorate Degree, majoring in healthcare administration or a related field.

#21 New England HIMSS Dvora Brodie Scholarship

The New England Chapter of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) offers this scholarship to a deserving student in the field of healthcare informatics. Established in 2005, this scholarship was created in honor of Dvora Brodie, a dedicated HIMSS member who died of ovarian cancer in 2003. Applicants for The New England HIMSS Dvora Brodie Scholarship must fulfill these minimum requirements:

About the Author

After earning a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Rutgers University and then a Master of Science in Clinical and Forensic Psychology from Drexel University, Kristen Fescoe began a career as a therapist at two prisons in Philadelphia. At the same time she volunteered as a rape crisis counselor, also in Philadelphia. After a few years in the field she accepted a teaching position at a local college where she currently teaches online psychology courses. Kristen began writing in college and still enjoys her work as a writer, editor, professor and mother.
