Meharry Medical College is a graduate coed college located in Nashville, Tennessee and is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The mission (as stated by Meharry) is “to educate healthcare professionals and scientists.” The college was founded in 1876 as the Medical Department of Central Tennessee College and was the first medical school in the South permitting African Americans to enroll, and now includes a dental school, medical school, graduate school and an allied health school. Meharry offers include Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH), Master of Health Science (MHS), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees. The School of Medicine provides students of diverse background, especially African Americans, with a quality, health science education with the programs emphasis on addressing underserved populations.

Master of Science of Public Health

The Master of Science in Public Health curriculum provides students with the scientific knowledge and competencies to enter successful careers as health professionals. Coursework allows graduates to make their public health decisions on “evidence based” data. The MSPH requires completion of 45 credits including 24 credits of core coursework and 21 electives. Additionally students may elect to pursue a specific area of concentration selecting their electives accordingly. Goals for the MSPH program include:

  • Providing students with a quality education in public health with the skills and knowledge to address the public health needs of all communities with specific emphasis addressing the needs of underserved populations
  • Provide a public health education resulting in employment in public health or continuing to further education
  • Providing students with the opportunity to engage in scholarly activity that includes research.

Students must complete a 400-hour externship in a public health agency ( the externship must be at least ten 40-hour work weeks, totaling 400 hours and is generally held during the summer months between the first year and second year of study). Partner organizations in the past have included Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Tennessee Hospital Association, Centers for Disease Control, Department of Veterans Affairs, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Harvard University, and the Minority International Research Training (MIRT) Program in Ethiopia Africa.

Jennings A Jones College of Business

Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) is a public coeducational university located in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Founded in 1911 (as a normal school) the university includes eight undergraduate colleges and a college of graduate studies, offering more than 80 majors/degree programs in more than 35 departments. The College of Behavioral and Health Sciences

Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) is a coeducational public university that was founded in 1911. MTSU is located in Murfreesboro Tennessee (32 miles southeast of Nashville). The university is made up of eight undergraduate colleges including the College of Basic and Applied Sciences, the College of Behavioral and Health Sciences, the Jennings A. Jones College of Business, the College of Education, the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Mass Communication, the University College, the University Honors College and a College of Graduate Studies. The main campus is situated on more than 500 acres and offers a variety of academic programs to students coming from 50 states and 79 foreign countries. Since 1911, MTSU has graduated more than 100,000 students. MTSU is a member of the State University and Community College System of Tennessee. Current enrollment is over 22,000 students. The College of Behavioral and Health Sciences is the newest college at the university and focuses on research-based service providers through its five departments and one school. Master of Science in Nursing

Curriculum for the Master of Science in Nursing provides students with a strong foundation in complex systems, organizational theory, financial management and leadership practice. The MSN program is offered through a consortium of the six Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) universities including Austin Peay State University, East Tennessee State University, Middle Tennessee State University, Tennessee State University, Tennessee Technological University, and the University of Memphis. The program provides courses online through all six universities coordinating clinical study in the student’s home area whenever possible with Classes taught by faculty from all six universities. The MSN program prepares nurses for practice as advanced clinicians, to teach in entry-level nursing programs, or managing in professional practice settings. Graduates are prepared to enter careers in settings including hospitals, nursing homes, long term care, business, private practice, academia and community centers. Students in the MSN program can elect a specific area of specialization including: Advanced Practice: Family Nurse Practitioner, Nursing Administration, Nursing Education, and Nursing Informatics and can also elect to pursue Graduate certificates in Nursing Administration, Nursing Education, Family Nurse Practitioner, and Nursing Informatics. The program requires completion of 36 credits of graduate nursing course including the following:

  • 15 credits of core coursework
  • 15 credits of Concentration Courses in Advanced Practice: Family Nurse Practitioner, Nursing Administration, Nursing Education, and Nursing Informatics)

Milligan College

William B Greene Junior School of Business

Founded in 1866, Milligan College is a private Christian-affiliated coeducational college that is located in northeastern Tennessee. The college offers students the opportunity to choose from over 100 majors with 30 undergraduate and four graduate programs of study. More than 70 percent of students at Milligan live on campus, and every student is permitted to have a car on campus. All students attending the college must participate in the college’s Spiritual Formation Program (accumulating 150 credits by attending chapel, lectures, campus ministry programs, community service programs and other events during their undergraduate studies). The “Buffaloes,” Milligan sports teams compete in the Appalachian Athletic Conference in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. Current undergraduate enrollment is 979 students on the 181-acre main campus. In 2016, US News and World Reports ranked Milligan College as 6th for Best Southern Regional Colleges. The William B Greene Junior School of Business and Technology prepares students for leadership roles ensuring they are prepared with technical skills required for solving complex problems, and with the ability evaluate their roles critically to become a positive influence in the workplace.

Master of Business Administration in Healthcare Management

The Master of Business Administration program provides a curriculum of study to prepare students for roles of leadership in business. Coursework includes the major functional areas within business while re-enforcing commitment to Christian values and ethical conduct to meet the challenges of a highly competitive business environment with integrity and character. The program requires completion of 32 credits and is generally completed in fourteen months (four semesters of study). Classes are held one weekend each month supported by the availability of internet-based contact with other students and faculty between the monthly class sessions. Outcomes for Graduates of the program include the following abilities:

  • Acquire, integrate, and apply the body of knowledge found within the major functional areas, which include: marketing; management; accounting; finance; economics; strategic analysis, planning, and implementation; information management; and quantitative analysis.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing including using the computer technology as a communications tool
  • Demonstrate ethical, socially responsible, and moral principles in business decision-making
  • Integrate faith and leadership, management, and team skills necessary for successful planning, implementation, and control of the business enterprise both domestically and globally

The health care management concentration highlights the US healthcare system and topics include managing staff, government interventions, and comparisons of other healthcare delivery systems in developed countries. Coursework covers health care finance administration and managing regulatory compliance within healthcare organizations. The concentration inn health care administration prepares students to enter administrative careers in the health care industry. Students in the concentration are required completion of a six hour internship on-site, supervised at a hospital, long-term care, or other medical facility.

South College is a for-profit coeducational college located in Knoxville, Tennessee. Founded in 1882 by Jacob T Johnson as Nashville Business College, the college was renamed South College in 2001 due to growth and program diversity. South awards associates, bachelor’s, master’s and a PhD program. Master of Business Administration in Healthcare Administration

The Master of Business Administration program focuses on student learning and development of skills and knowledge to identify, develop, and enhance their understanding to enter successful careers managing in general business and healthcare environments. Students in the MBA in Health care Administration program have the ability to tailor their classes to meet their objectives and interests selecting specific topics in coursework papers and projects. A required capstone course provides participants with an investigation of a business dilemma in the healthcare environment, incorporating principles of accounting, finance, marketing, economics, and management concepts and theories.
