April 2018

There’s a shortage of nurses in the workforce, including those with faculty positions at colleges and universities. The Online Journal of Issues in Nursing anticipates the shortage will last until 2025. Nurses seeking advanced positions as nursing educators will find earning their degree online is both affordable and accessible. According to the Bureau of Labor Statics, nursing educators can expect to earn between $72,210 and $83,640 per year depending on where they teach.

Nursing educators have leadership positions in colleges and universities, hospitals, private health care facilities, medical centers, and surgical hospitals. As more people become interested in pursuing this avenue, more high-quality graduate degree programs are becoming available. Both the American Association of Colleges and Nursing (CCNE) and The Accreditation Commission For Education in Nursing (ACEN) accredit online nursing programs. We encourage students to look for a program that is not only affordable, but has earned accreditation through one of these entities.

This ranking gathers the highest quality online programs offering nursing education master’s degrees. The ranking system is based upon the average graduate tuition rate published by College Navigator, a tool offered by the National Center for Education Statistics. There are well over 100 online master’s programs for nurse educators, so we narrowed our list to only those programs with tuition rates less than $11,700. Specializations, awards and achievements earned by the school or department have also been noted.
