Master of Business Administration with Healthcare Administration Concentration

The curriculum for the Master of Business Administration provides students with a core foundation of communication and problem solving, theoretical and applied understanding of basic business systems, concepts and principles. Coursework strengthens student’s individual knowledge of quantitative and qualitative analysis and management practices, organizational growth and development, finance, accounting, economics, marketing, and operations. The MBA program is available on campus or completely online to allow flexibility in meeting needs of working professionals. Competencies for graduates of the MBA program will have the following abilities:

Francis Marion University

The Business School

Founded in1970, Francis Marion University is one of South Carolina’s 13 public, coeducational universities. Francis Marion University offers 5 undergraduate degrees including: Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of General Studies, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Graduate degrees include the Master of Arts in Teaching, Master of Business Administration, Master of Education, Master of Science in Applied Psychology (clinical and school psychology tracks), and Specialist in School Psychology. A physician assistant program will begin at FMU in 2016. Current enrollment is 3,600 students on the 400-acre main campus. In 2016, US News and World Reports ranked Francis Marion University as the 76th best South Regional University. The School of Business offers majors in eight business areas, as well as two minor degrees. More than 600 students are currently enrolled major in accounting, finance, marketing, economics, management, information systems, and other areas of business.

Master of Business Administration with a Concentration in Health Management

The Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Health Management (MBA) program provides students with a foundation to enter careers in health care management and hospital administration. The program is flexible to meet the needs of working professionals with classes on campus only three Saturdays each semester. Courses begin in the fall, spring and summer semesters. The 30 credit MBA program requires 18 credits in core business coursework through the School of Business and 12 credits of health care coursework is through graduate faculty of the FMU Masters of Science in Nursing. Competencies for graduates of the MBA program include:

Medical University of South Carolina

The College of Health Professions

The Medical University of South Carolina (also known as MUSC) opened in Charleston, South Carolina in 1824 as a small private college educating physicians. It is one of the oldest continually operating medical schools in the country and the oldest in the south. The school has expanded into a state university comprised of a medical center and six colleges for the education of health professionals, biomedical scientists and other health care personnel. It also operates as a center for research and has a public hospital. The College of Health Professions opened in 1966 and offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree programs.

Master of Science in Health Informatics

The curriculum for the Master of Science in Health Informatics (MSHI) prepares students with the skills required in selecting, implementing, using, and evaluating health care information systems including electronic health records, data management, and analytic systems. The program prepares working health care professionals desiring a specialization in health care information systems, data management and analytic systems. With a growing demand trained professionals with the ability to secure, analyze and take action on patient- and population-level health information. Students in the program can choose a thesis option in health informatics research. Graduates of the program are prepared to enter careers as Clinical Systems Analysts, Data Analytics, Health IT Project Managers and Chief Medical or Nursing Officers. Students can enroll in two or three Internet-based courses each semester (full time students will take three courses and part time students will take two courses each semester). Students will need to attend one on-campus session per semester that can be a four-day weekend.

Master of Health Administration

The curriculum for the Master of Health Administration (MHA) program prepares students with a core understanding of the current healthcare delivery system and the factors that impact its various components. Coursework allows students with the skills to apply concepts and managerial skills in human resources, strategic planning, decision-making, finance, and marketing. Additionally, the MHA program allows students to choose from two tracks:

  • The Executive MHA program is well suited for more experienced health professionals needing to balance their studies with their careers. Coursework can be completed online, so students can continue in their careers while completing two to three years of coursework. Students are required to attend class on campus one weekend every semester. The Executive MHA program requires completion of 54 credit hours and no internship is required.
  • The Residential MHA program requires little or no previous healthcare experience. Students in the Residential program attend classes as a full time student. Classes are conducted on campus offering students exposure to real-world learning. Students in the Residential MHA program are required completion of a six-credit hour internship between their first and second years. Completion of the program requires 62 credit hours with a required internship and an inter-professional course.

Graduates of the MHA program are prepared to enter careers in hospitals, physician practices, long-term care, and consulting.

The School of Business

Founded in 1899, South University is a private coed university located in Columbia South Carolina. The mission of the university is to “provide an education for the intellectual, social, and professional development of a diverse student population”. Although the main academic focus of the university is business and health professions – the school also offers degrees in arts and criminal justice through the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business, College of Health Professions, College of Nursing and the School of Pharmacy. The Columbia campus offers the flexibility of pursuing many of its courses on campus, online, or a combination of both. Healthcare Administration Master of Business Administration

The curriculum for the Healthcare Administration Master of Business Administration (MBA) prepares students to become with required business competencies and management skills to be successful in management careers in health care delivery. Coursework includes a cure foundation of business analyses and decision-making and the specialization in healthcare administration provides knowledge and skills for problem analysis, team and group leadership and effective problem solving in a variety of business situations. Graduates of the program are prepared to enter careers in a variety of settings including: hospitals, county, state and federal health problems, pharmaceuticals, health care organizations, medical labs, medical billing, health education and training companies. Students in the MBA program can elect to pursue an accelerated MBA program that can be completed in one year by taking weekend classes (24 Saturdays per year with additional internet courses web based meetings).

Founded in 1892 as Strayer Business College, Strayer University is private, coed, for-profit university with 40,000 students throughout online programs and at 76 campuses located across the United States.
