Concordia University

The School of Management

Concordia University is a private liberal arts university located in Portland Oregon. The school was originally established in 1905 as a university prep school, and since that time is has grown from a small school to an undergraduate enrollment of more than 5,400 students. Concordia is affiliated with the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod and is part of the Concordia University System. The Master of Business Administration in Healthcare (MBA) curriculum provides a core foundation in the knowledge and skills required to manage successfully and lead ethically. Coursework provides students with a framework to meet the challenges of changing technologies, economic conditions, and environmental shifts. To meet each student’s specific career goals, the MBA is available with five areas of concentration: General Management, Finance, Healthcare Administration, Environmental Management, and Global Business Management.Competencies for the MBA in Healthcare Administration include the following abilities:

  • Identification of roles of financial managers in planning for Healthcare organizations
  • Provide students with theory of Healthcare financing and reimbursement mechanisms
  • Demonstrate core knowledge of skills in financing working capital including Collections, receivables management, inventory management, productivity management and short term financing
  • Analyze and evaluate methods of financing capital expenditures

Marylhurst University

The School of Business

Maryhurst University is a private, coed liberal arts college located in Marylhurst Oregon. The school is affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church, and is located nine miles south of Portland. Founded in 1897 as Saint Mary’s College by the Sisters of the Holy Name of Jesus, it is among the oldest colleges in Oregon. The university awards nearly 50 accredited undergraduate and graduate degrees and certificate programs designed specifically for students with multiple responsibilities needing flexibility in their educations program. Master of Business Administration in MBA in Health Care Management

The Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Healthcare Management program is designed to prepare students with the ability to navigate the current changes taking place in today’s healthcare organizations. Coursework for the program includes: organizational leadership, finance, governmental regulations and policies, marketing, law, and other areas pertaining to the healthcare industry. The program is available in a fully online program and requires 32 to 37 credits of core business curriculum, 12 credits in a specific concentration and a four-credit capstone class. The Department of Public Health and Preventative Medicine – School of Public Health

Oregon Health and Science University is a public coed university with its main campus and two hospitals located in Portland Oregon. With its beginning in 1974 as the Health Sciences Center of the University of Oregon, it combined the dentistry, medicine and nursing into one center. It was renamed Oregon Health Sciences University in 1981 as part of a merger with the Oregon Graduate Institute of Science and Technology. The university maintains partnership programs including a joint PharmD program with Oregon State in Corvallis. The Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) includes the following divisions: Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Health Services Research.

Master of Public Health in Epidemiology

The Master of Public Health in Epidemiology track provides students with a population perspective toward health care and disease prevention. Coursework emphasizes the use of quantitative methods in analyzing and addressing health problems in order to support basic and applied research in healthcare and public health. Core curriculum in the Master of Public Health program provides students with an understanding of the statistical, epidemiological, political, behavioral, environmental science, and organizational basis of public health and the healthcare system. The concentration in epidemiology provides epidemiological and statistical reasoning skills and competency in the distribution and dynamics of disease in populations, evaluating healthcare programs, and conducting clinical, behavioral, and health services research. Competencies for the program include the following abilities:

  • Applying population based concepts of epidemiology and risk determination in assessing health problems
  • Use evidence-based skills in health determinants to issues relevant to public health
  • Utilize varied statistical methods used in medical and public health research.

Master of Public Health in Biostatistics

The Master of Public Health (MPH) in Biostatistics offered at OHSU provides students with training in biostatistics methods with an application to population health. Coursework for the program emphasizes advanced applied statistical methods and statistical programming used in public health research and practice. The Biostatistics MPH focuses on developing competencies in population-based study design, analytic methods, data interpretation, and communication. Graduates of the program are amply prepared to pursue careers in healthcare and medical centers, local, state and federal agencies, pharmaceutical companies and in research. Competencies for graduates of the program include the following competencies:

  • Application of appropriate principles in research design and population-based concepts to assess public health problems
  • Use descriptive and inferential statistical methods appropriately to analyze risk determinants of disease and health conditions
  • Utilize statistical methods Appropriate to different study designs in public health research
  • Interpret results and communicate them to audience’s (both lay and professional) in context of proper public health principles
  • Identification of the strengths and weaknesses of alternative designs and analytic methods to review and assess statistical analyses in public health literature
  • Describe core ethical principles relevant in collection, maintenance, use, and dissemination of public health data
  • Basic understanding of relationship within the organization, delivery, and financing of health-related services

Dual Medical Doctor – Master of Public Health

The Medical Doctor / Master of Public Health (MD/MPH) dual degree program is designed specifically for those students with a deep commitment to a career in a population-based clinical practice with a public health degree enhancing their career productivity in research, policy, or programs. Students in the MD/MPH program are admitted to the Epidemiology track providing them critical core concepts and methods required for careers in medicine and public health. Students are provided with ample opportunity to explore and gain expertise in public health research and through elective coursework, a required field experience and the CPH Exam.Students will begin MPH studies in an intensive three-week introductory Epidemiology course before beginning medical school coursework. An MD/MPH seminar is provided in fall of students first year and with ongoing mentoring during the five years of study. Students earn 10-12 credits taking selected MPH courses during their first two years, and they have the opportunity to pursue a summer field experience in public health research or practice between the first and second year of study. This allows students in the program to become engaged with public health issues and perspectives while studying clinical medicine in order to become familiar with the faculty and research in the school. Students spend a year dedicated to graduate studies for the MPH degree after the third year, in which they complete core course requirements and the most of the required field experience coursework. Summer internship projects in the past have included working with the Oregon Health Division, the Northwest Portland Indian Health Board, the CDC, and with independent researchers. Several students have developed, funded, and carried out international health projects in Africa and South America.

Master of Science in Biostatistics

The Master of Science (MS) in Biostatistics program provides students with graduate training in the application and theory of biostatistics. The program is designed for students who want to pursue careers as intermediate level biostatisticians or enter doctoral programs in biostatistics, and is also appropriate for students who have earned a Graduate Certificate in Biostatistics to pursue further training. Future careers include collaborative biostatistics in basic, clinical, translational or population sciences, as well as some clinical and translational researchers.
Competencies for graduates of the program include the following abilities:

  • Applying bio-statistical theory and techniques in the design, planning, and management of data collection to conduct analysis for own research projects or support collaborative research
  • Define broad research goals into specifications and procedures for statistical analysis and interpretation of results in basic, clinical, translational and public health research study
  • Choose appropriate statistical analysis software for assessment, decision-making and information sharing
  • Communicate statistical methods and findings to specialists and non-specialist audiences.
  • Students are required completion of 48 credits to earn the MS degree.

Graduate Certificate in Biostatistics

The Graduate Certificate in Biostatistics program provides students with graduate level training in biostatistics in the health sciences. The program is designed for researchers, students in other programs, and working professionals to become more skilled in applied biostatistics methods and theory. Students who are seeking acceptance into the program should have a strong aptitude for mathematics. The 30 credits Certification in Biostatistics program include 18 credits in core coursework and 12 electives. The program is available on a part-time or full-time basis. including formal classroom sessions and hands-on statistical computing. Additionally, students have opportunities to engage in mentored collaborative health science research experiences involving ongoing projects. Competencies for the program include the following abilities:

  • Perform a broad range of applied statistical procedures in basic, clinical, population and translational sciences
  • Interpret and summarize analysis results in research and to communicate them to individuals with different degrees of statistical background
  • Apply principles of research design in addressing problems in basic, clinical, and population sciences
  • Identification of the strengths and weaknesses of alternative designs and analytic methods
  • Conduct analyses for student’s research projects or provide support to collaborative research teams
