The College of Public Health – Health Sciences Center

The Health Sciences Center at the University of Oklahoma is a comprehensive academic health center with seven professional colleges that include: Allied Health, Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health and Graduate Studies. Master of Public Health

The Master of Public Health (MPH) degree is designed to prepare practicing professionals in the field of public health. The interdisciplinary MPH program requires 42-45 credit hours of study and includes the following: 15 credits of core courses, 15 credits of selective courses, 9 credits of elective courses, a practicum preparation seminar, a Integrated public health practice and a public health practicum. All MPH students are expected to complete the 15-hour core curriculum within the first 21 credit hours of study. Core Competencies for MPH include:

  • Show roles of biostatistics in discipline of public health
  • Ability to interpret and apply results from methodologies according to study design, measurement scale, and available data to answer a specific research question
  • Show direct and indirect human, ecological and safety effect of major environmental and occupational agents

  • Calculation of basic epidemiology measure and draw inference from data

Master of Public Health in Preparedness and Terrorism Response

The Master of Public Health (MPH) in Preparedness and Terrorism Response program trains students using coursework that builds and enhances their competencies in disaster preparation and response while emphasizing public health principles. The 42-credit program requires 15 credits of core coursework, 27 credits of Preparedness and Terrorism Requirements, a Practicum Preparation Seminar and a Public Health Practicum on preparedness topic. Students in the MPH in Preparedness and Terrorism Response program are required to take the CPH examination and complete a Culminating Experience. Competencies for the MPH in Preparedness and Terrorism Response program include the following abilities:

  • Utilize principles of crisis and risk management
  • Report information relevant to identification and control of emergencies through appropriate chain of command

Master of Public Health in Biostatistics

Curriculum for the Master of Public health in Biostatistics focuses on biostatistical methods and their application to public health problems. Graduates of the Master of Public Health in Biostatistics program are prepared to enter careers in public, non-profit and private sectors in the design and analysis of clinical trials and public health survey data and quality assurance – employed as consultants and research-team members by the pharmaceutical industry, medical schools, government agencies, or insurance firms. Course requirements for the Master of Public Health (MPH) in Biostatistics requires completion of a minimum of 45 credits including an integrated Public Health Practice and a Public Health Practicum. Competencies for the program include the following abilities:

  • Use of computer software for data entry and data base management and use of computer programs for summary, analyzing and display of public health or biomedical results
  • Determine appropriate method of statistical analysis reflecting a specific question of interest, the study design implemented and the available data, implementing methodological alternatives to commonly used statistical methods when assumptions are not met
  • Read statistical methods reported in public health and medical literature and comment on appropriateness to study design and research question
  • Compare advantages and disadvantages of using nonparametric and parametric statistical procedure
  • Identify, use and combine sources of data including vital statistics records, disease registries, national surveys and medical records to address question in epidemiology

Master of Public Health in Epidemiology

The Master of Public Health in Epidemiology (MPH) program provides students with a course of study highlighting the distribution and dynamics of disease and health in populations. Coursework investigates the factors and determinants of disease in populations to look for solutions to control and/or prevent disease and improve health. The program prepares students for careers in health agencies and medical institutions, in consulting, in bio statistical and epidemiological research and for academic careers in schools of public health and medicine. The MPH in Epidemiology program requires 45 credits for completion and includes the following: 15 credits of core courses, 13 credits of required BSE courses, 12 credits of Elective BSE courses, an Integrated Public Health Practice and a Public Health Practicum. Competencies for the MPH in Epidemiology include the following ability:

  • Identify, access, and integrate sources of health data (i.e. vital statistics records, disease registries, national surveys, and medical records) in addressing questions in epidemiology
  • Identify pathophysiology, natural history, and relative frequencies of health conditions causing morbidity and mortality
  • Given, compare and contrast strengths of an epidemiological investigation – its limitations, and inference from data collected through the use of epidemiological research designs
  • Assess and identify strategies in summarizing and reporting the impact of effect

Master of Public Health in Health Administration and Policy

The Master of Public Health in Health Administration and Policy prepares students for careers as highly skilled professionals in hospitals, health care systems, and public health organizations. The MPH program prepares students in the development, implementation and evaluation of programmatic activity in health services organizations. This program is available in a full or part-time format. Graduates of the program are prepared to enter careers in fellowships or administrative positions in health organizations and state or county health departments. The 44 credit Master of Public Health in Health Administration and Policy (MPH/HAP) program requires the following: 15 credits of Core Courses, 18 credits of required HAP courses, 6 credits of Elective courses, 3 credits of Integrated Public Health Practice, a Practicum Preparation Seminar and a Public Health Practicum. Competencies for the program include the following:

  • Identify the legal and ethical basis for public health and health services
  • Apply core principles of program planning, development, budgeting, management and evaluation in organizational and community initiatives
  • Apply principles of strategic planning and marketing to public health
  • Apply concepts of quality and performance improvement in addressing organizational performance issues
  • Utilize systems thinking for solving organizational problems

Master of Public Health in Health Promotion Sciences

The Master of Public Health in Health Promotion Sciences educates public health professionals in the social and behavioral aspects of public health and in the prevention of health-related problems and conditions. The MPH program requires 44 credits for completion including an Integrated Public Health Practice and 2 Public Health Practicum courses. Competencies for the program include the following abilities:

  • Apply theories, concepts, and models from a range of social and behavioral disciplines that are used in public health research and practice
  • Analyze individual, organizational, and community concerns, assets, resources and inadequacies to effect social and behavioral science interventions
  • Apply ethical principles in public health program planning, implementation and evaluation
  • Evaluate multiple targets and develop multiple levels of intervention for social and behavioral science programs

Master of Public Health in Occupational and Environmental Health Sciences

Environmental Health Science includes the study of biological, chemical or physical agents in the environment and how they affect human health and the ecology. Graduates of the MPH in Environmental Health Sciences are prepared to pursue careers as analysts, managers, toxicologists, industrial hygienists, auditors, risk assessors, teachers, researchers and health professionals. The Master of Public Health in Environmental Health Sciences requires 44 credits for completion including an Integrated Public Health Practice and a Public Health Practicum Course. The Master of Health Administration

The Master of Health Administration (MHA) program prepares the graduate for careers in health service organizations as senior administrators. The mission of the MHA Program (as stated by the University) is “preparing future healthcare leaders through excellence in education and practice”. The MHA is a 60-credit program that requires all students to complete an internship and a defense of the internship report. Competencies for the MHA program include the following:

  • Synthesis and evaluation of the healthcare system, healthcare management, and issues related to Healthcare organizations, access to care, financing healthcare, human resources, financial management, strategic planning and thinking, quality improvement, and legal and regulatory matters
  • Communications Skills to utilize appropriate communication methods in professional Healthcare settings, establish best practices of communication skills and to identify and respond to audiences needs, interests and beliefs
  • Critical thinking, analytical skills and problem solving ability to include statistical and financial analysis in solving problems, create strategic thinking and planning to make recommendations and apply quality improvement methods to analyze and change outcomes in an organization

Master of Science in Biostatistics

The study of Biostatistics includes design and analysis of experimental studies, including clinical trials, and non-experimental (observational) studies, theory of probability and statistics, and statistical computing. Competencies for the MS in Biostatistics include the following abilities:

  • Statistical Theory – Explain the theoretical background of commonly used statistical procedures
  • Statistical Computing – Use computer software programs includes Excel, Access and Redcap for date entry and database management and use computer programs including SAS and JMP for processing, summarizing, analyzing and displaying complex public health or biomedical data and research results
  • Applied Bio statistical Methods – Apply and interpret results from methodologies according to the type of study design, measurement scale, and available data for answering a particular research question
  • Determine appropriate methods of statistical analysis in a question of interest, the implemented study design and the available data, implementing methodological alternatives to commonly used statistical methods
  • Understand statistical methods in public health reports and medical literature, commenting on their appropriateness to the study design and research questions
  • Critique advantages and disadvantages in using nonparametric or parametric statistical procedures, and in the use of univariate, bivariate and multivariable procedures

Master of Science in Epidemiology

Curriculum for the Master of Science in Epidemiology include a study in the distribution and dynamics of disease and health in populations to understand the factors and determinants of disease in populations in the control and prevention of disease to optimize health. The Department’s programs are designed to prepare students for careers in health agencies and medical institutions; for consultation, especially in the biomedical fields; for independent biostatistical and epidemiological research; and for academic careers in schools of public health and medicine. Competencies for the program include the following:

  • Describe the importance of epidemiology, and aspects of a public health problem including magnitude, person, time and place, for informing scientific, ethical, economic and political discussion of health issues

Master of Science in Health Promotion Sciences

The Master of Science (MS) in Health Promotion Sciences course Requirements include the following:

  • Nine credits of Core Courses
  • Twelve credits of Requires Coursework
  • Three credits of Electives
  • Fourteen credits of electives and research for Master Thesis
  • Oral Thesis Defense
  • Research for Masters Thesis

A minimum of 38 credits is required for the MS in Health Promotion Sciences. Competencies for the MS in Health Promotions include the following abilities:

Master of Science in Industrial Hygiene and Environmental Health Sciences

The Master of Science (MS) in Industrial Hygiene and Environmental Health curriculum provides students with a study in the role that the environment plays in health of human, how they are exposed to hazards in their environment and what the outcomes are due to these exposures. Students learn to design science-based policy to protect the current and the future environmental health of the population. Course Requirements for the 48 credit MS in Industrial Hygiene and Environmental Health includes a quantitative examination, Field Practice (240 contact Hours) Industrial Hygiene Knowledge Survey, Oral Thesis Defense and a Masters Thesis. Competencies for the MS in Industrial Hygiene and Environmental Health include the following abilities:
