State University of New York at Albany
School of Public Health
Founded in 1844, The University at Albany is a member institution of the State University of New York (SUNY). The university enrolls 17,300 students throughout nine schools and colleges and offers more than 50 undergrad majors and 120 masters programs. In the US News and World Report 2015 edition of Best Colleges, Albany was ranked as the 126th best National University. The School of Public Health offers a Master of Public Health, a Master of Science, a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and a PhD in a partnership between the New York State Department of Health and the University at Albany. A total of 51 credit hours are required for the MPH degree:
- 18 credit hours of Core Courses
- 3 credit hours of First Year Seminar & Capstone
- 21 credit hours of Concentration requirements & Electives
- 9 credit hours of Internships
Master of Public Health
The 45 to 51-credit Master of Public Health (MPH) degree requires 30 credits within the Health Policy and Management or Social Behavior and Community and 9 credits of an internship (depending on the student’s prior experience in public health or related fields). Those students with a bachelor’s degree without prior graduate education or experience in the field will require at least two years of full time study to complete the program. The MPH program prepares graduates to deal with modern public health problems with the skills to use scientific and technical knowledge in the prevention of disease as well as the promotion of wellness through community efforts. The diverse and complex public health issues facing public health professions today require an understanding of the political, ethical, economic, and scientific concerns. Students are required to participate in at least two distinct public health internships. Coursework for the program includes 18 credit hours of core courses, 3 credit hours of first year seminar & capstone, 21 credits of concentration requirements & electives and 9 credit hours of Internships. Biomedical Sciences Concentration
The Biomedical Sciences Concentration offers students an understanding of the biomedical issues of public health including the molecular basis of disease and implications for public health programs. Students gain knowledge in core areas of biomedical sciences and the role biomedical sciences play in public health. Areas of study include detection, treatment and prevention of genetic, infectious, and other human diseases. Students will gain a better understanding of the strengths and limitations of a variety of laboratory methods and the way they apply to solving public health problems.
Biostatistics Concentration
The Biostatistics Concentration provides students the skills and knowledge in the use of statistics in analyzing public health data. Students gain a strong foundation in core areas of statistical science, developing skills required in solving public health problem and determining variables relevant to public health problems. Coursework allows graduates of the program an understanding of the use of data, determining integrity of data sets, and how to use data in improving issues in public health issues.
Epidemiology
The Epidemiology Concentration in the MPH program prepares students for a career in research into the causes and prevention of human diseases. Various methods of research are studied in coursework for the program disease outcomes in AIDS, TB, cancer and varied factors that are critical in the cause of disease. Students will gain the skills to connect the way epidemiology relates to medicine, environmental science, health policy, and social policy. Graduates of the Epidemiology Concentration will understand how to design, apply and interpret epidemiological studies of public health problems in the community. Students will gain core knowledge of epidemiologic practice in surveillance, etiologic investigation, and evaluating preventive interventions.
Environmental Health Sciences
Students pursuing the Environmental Health Sciences Concentration are prepared to properly assess the environmental quality and risks and the application of scientific knowledge in solving environmental health problems. Students in this program gain core knowledge of environmental health including chemistry, toxicology, and occupational health and learn essential skills in collecting and analyzing environmental data, dose-response assessment and risk assessment. Graduates understand the strengths and limitations of laboratory methods so as to make valid use of scientific data and their application to environmental health problems. Graduates of the MPH Environmental Health Sciences concentration enter careers in public health in academia, industries in chemicals or pharmaceuticals, and environmental protection agencies in federal, state and local offices.
Health Policy and Management
The MPH in Health Policy and Management is designed to give students a broad based knowledge to develop and implement health policies. Coursework allows students the skills to communicate and develop participation and motivation in their specific organizations. Competencies include the ability to state options for change and supporting theory to identify barriers to change while developing methods to monitor and evaluate programs for effectiveness and quality. Graduates completing the Health Policy and Management Concentration will enter careers managing public health programs with the ability to communicate alternative models of management and function to resolve problems and recognize the use of organizational research methods in existing organizations.
Social Behavior and Community Health
Students of the Social Behavior and Community Health Program study the methods and concepts of social and behavioral sciences and how they are related to the identification and solutions in current public health problems. Graduates understand the influences of individual, group and cultural factors on the health of populations and how these issues will effect the development and organization of public health programs and delivery of services in communities. Public Health Master / Medical Doctorate Albany Medical College Dual Degree Program
The dual Public Health Master (MPH) and Medical Doctorate (MD) at Albany Medical College dual degree program is awarded in conjunction with the School of Public Health and Albany Medical College to prepare physicians skilled in addressing public health problems and professionals in public health skilled in clinical knowledge and practice. The dual degree program prepares physicians with the skills to become better practitioners and leaders in medicine and public health. The dual degree can be completed in as little as five years. The MPH coursework can be completed in the summer between the first and second years of medical school (core courses), the summer between second and third year of medical school (core courses), and a third year of MPH coursework between second and third years of medical school (core, track, and elective courses with a required internship) and a fifth year internship. Applicants must first be admitted into the medical school in order to be considered for admission into the dual MPH/MD degree program.
Master of Science in Health Administration
The Master of Science in Health Administration (MSHS) is offered through the Department of Health Policy, Management and Behavior and the School of Public Health for students pursuing careers in planning and leadership roles within the public health field. Students gain the skills and knowledge in analyzing, developing, implementing and evaluating health policy and health related programs. The Master of Science is offered in either a Health Policy and Management (Health Administration) or Social Behavior and Community Health (Behavioral Sciences). Graduates of the program enter careers as program planners and evaluators, health policy analysts, health service managers, health promotion specialists in the private sector, government and non-profit organizations and research. Students enrolled in the MS program are required to complete an internship completion of the degree.

The Graduate School
Alfred University is a private university located in Western New York, just south of Buffalo. The university offers more than 60 majors and areas of concentration in agricultural, allied health, business, and engineering technologies, liberal arts and sciences, as well as applied technology at its four colleges and schools. Alfred was founded in 1836 as the Select School by Seventh Day Baptists as a non-sectarian institution and has a current enrollment of over 2,000 undergraduate students and approximately 300 graduate students. Master of Public Health
The Master of Public Administration (MPA) program is designed for students to pursue an interest in management, administration, and the design and implementation of services in the field of public health. Graduates pursue careers in nonprofit agencies community planning and development, programs for the elderly, hospital administration, city and county administration, welfare services, social counseling, and other municipal and social services. Focus for the program include:
- Develop a basic understanding of public and social policy issues
- Gain an appreciation for organizational behavior
- Budget formation and management
- Utilize effective management techniques
To allow flexibility for working professionals, classes for the MPA program are available in a part-time program with classes meeting full days on weekends (each course consisting of five class sessions). Students meet on Saturdays and remain together for the duration of the program. Curriculum includes 21 credits of core courses, 15 credits of elective courses to allow students to choose an area of specialization. Three credits of the program are in a capstone project, which is developed in the first year of the program.
