Master of Public Administration with Concentration in Healthcare Management

The 39-credit Master of Public Administration (MPA) program prepares students for a career of management and leadership in governmental, nonprofit, and other public service organizations. College of Health Related Professions

Located in central Brooklyn New York, SUNY Downstate Medical Center is the academic medical center with a current enrollment of 1,738 students with more than 8,000 faculty and staff. Master of Science in Health Informatics

Medical Informatics involves the use of technology in the organization, analysis, management and use of health information, clinical data, images, and knowledge for the improvement of patient care, health education, administration and research. The Master of Science in Medical Informatics program is a 39-credit full-time or part-time course of study. Coursework for the program includes database systems, network architecture, medical imaging systems, internet integration, medical decision support systems, and evaluation of healthcare information systems. Students are also required to conduct an independent research study in medical informatics. The mission of the Medical Informatics Program (as stated by the school) is to provide the following:

School of Public Health

The School of Public Health at SUNY Downstate Medical Center offers Masters of Public Health (MPH) degrees in 5 areas of concentration and Doctor of Public Health degrees in 3 areas of specialization. The mission of the SUNY Downstate School of Public Health is “advancing public health knowledge, promoting health and well-being, and preventing disease and disability within communities, particularly in urban and immigrant ones”. This is accomplished through the training of public health professionals, scientific investigation of public health issues, and service to communities to implement positive change for risk reduction and health promotion.

Master of Public Health

The Master of Public Health (MPH) program prepares students to enter careers as public health professionals with the skills and knowledge to address current global health problems via multidisciplinary approaches applying current scientific knowledge. MPH students are required complete 15 credits of MPH core requirements, 12 credits of the track specialty requirements, 12 credits of electives, 1 credit of the Field Experience, and 2 credits of the Culminating Experience. The master’s degree program can be completed as a full-time program in two years or up to four years as a part-time program. Concentrations for the program include:

Biostatistics
The MPH in Biostatistics provides students with a strong foundation in Public Health with a focus on quantitative methods. Students electing this concentration should possess an aptitude for quantitative reasoning and methods with a focus on public health.

Community Health Sciences
This concentration provides students with the skills and knowledge in identifying major behavioral, social, and cultural factors impacting the health of residents and immigrants, their families, and their communities in urban settings. Coursework allows students to work together to develop goals and strategy for adapting those factors, and to design assessments in determining direct effects of these efforts.
Students in this concentration gain understanding of the impact of urban and immigrant populations and how to address their health issues. Goals of the coursework and fieldwork are targeting theory and methods to design, implement, and evaluate programs with a goal to reduce major health problems.

Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences
The goal of the MPH Environmental Health Concentration is to provide MPH students with the basic tools and competencies in identifying, assessing, and managing environmental health problems.

Epidemiology
The MPH specialization in Epidemiology will allow students to gain the skills and knowledge required to carry out epidemiologic investigations of major public health issues that affect urban and immigrant populations. Curriculum and fieldwork emphasizes the skills needed to plan and implement epidemiologic study designs, collection and analysis of data, and methods to interpret and present findings and discussion of public health implications.

Health Policy and Management
The concentration in Health Policy and Management prepares students to become leaders in health policy and management skilled in the ability to develop and implement policy changes. This concentration provides coursework in the core knowledge of public health to assume leadership in healthcare organizations and institutions, which plan and evaluate management and policy strategy for health organizations and institutions.

Medical Doctor/Master of Public Health

The Medical Doctor/Master of Public Health dual degree allows medical students a deeper understanding of patients and society. Combining the MD with an MPH prepares students for leadership positions, educates students to improve the health entire communities, compete for the residency of choice and enhances earning power. The MD/MPH program prepares graduates to work in the public health arena in advocating change in health care policies, controlling today’s epidemic diseases, pursuing careers at agencies including the New York State Health Department, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or the National Institutes of Health and work in global health organizations. Medical students at Downstate earn their MPH degree at the same time they earn their MD degree. Students can choose to complete the 42 credit MPH by taking summer courses starting before the first year of medical school or take off between the third and fourth year of medical school to complete the MPH. The MD/MPH program focuses on the health of immigrant and urban populations and students receive priority for selection for the Medical Schools 4th year elective – School Health Care in Developing Countries. The student may choose to complete the MPH with a concentration in one of five core areas including:
