Rutgers University

School of Health Related Professions

Established in 1766, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is one of nine colonial chartered colleges established before the American Revolution. Rutgers is an American public research university and the largest institution of higher education in New Jersey with three campuses across the state. The New Brunswick Campus (located in New Brunswick and adjacent Piscataway) is the largest campus of the university and it is split into five mini-campuses known as Douglass, Cook, College Avenue, Busch and Livingston and combined has a total current enrollment of 33,900 students. In 2015, US News and World Report ranked Rutgers – New Brunswick as the 70th best National University. There are more than 400 student clubs and organizations across the mini-campuses and the Rutgers Scarlet Knights compete in the NCAA Division I Big Ten Conference.

The School of Health Related Professions (SHRP) provides quality education to more than 1,500 students (one-third of students are enrolled in online programs). Students can choose from over 40 programs educating current healthcare professionals for career advancement and preparing students for entry-level healthcare careers. The School has four campuses along with many online programs. It is home to several departments and programs such as Rehabilitation and Movement Sciences (Physical Therapy), Health Informatics, Nutritional Sciences, Clinical Lab Sciences, Primary Care, Medical Imaging Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies. Master of Science in Biomedical Informatics

Computing systems and technologies are essential for modern practices in medicine, pharmaceutical and clinical research, efficient and effective management of health care, and health professions education. To fill this increasing demand for well-trained professionals in the growing field of biomedical informatics, the Department of Health Informatics offers the Masters of Science (MS) in Biomedical Informatics Degree. This Degree prepares students for future careers as managers, specialists, scientists, researchers and educators in a wide range of healthcare settings that includes: hospitals and health care facilities, laboratories, pharmaceutical companies, insurance, private and governmental agencies. The program requires 36 credits and usually takes between 18 months and 24 months for completion. It is available in an online format for flexibility for those employed and needing a format to suit their educational needs.

Master of Science in Healthcare Management

The Master of Science in Health Care Management (MSHM) is an online graduate program, preparing students to become highly effective leaders in the healthcare industry. This program is designed for candidates with established careers in the healthcare field seeking to advance their careers by expanding their management and leadership skills. Building on experiences of current healthcare professionals the program emphasizes competencies related to leadership, strategic planning, finance, economics, quality assurance, informatics, legal and ethics, as well as research. The MSHM degree is not intended for those seeking an initial foothold in the health professions. The curriculum is designed for those seeking to attend the MSHM on a part-time basis. The Master of Science in Health Care Management has three tracks including:

  1. Management and Leadership track is designed for those individuals who are currently working in health care seeking to broaden and expand their management and administrative skill-set
  2. Pharmaceutical Management track is intended to develop the skills needed for pharmaceutical professionals to advance their current careers within the management and leadership ranks of pharmaceutical organizations.
  3. Health Care Informatics specialization includes the following courses: Healthcare Information Systems, Introduction to Electronic Health Systems, Healthcare Data Management, Healthcare Information Privacy, Security, and Confidentiality and One Elective.

Rutgers University

The mission of Rutgers School of Public Health is “ improving health and prevent disease in diverse populations in New Jersey and around the world through educating students to become well-qualified and effective public health leaders, researchers and practitioners; conducting research to advance public health science and policies; and providing service programs that promote population and individual health”. The School ranked in top 10 schools of public health for student diversity. The extensive School of Public Health system offers public health degrees at various locations throughout Rutgers various campuses. There are eight schools within RBHS:

  • The New Jersey Medical School is currently located in Newark New Jersey and has a current enrollment of more than 700 students awarding more than 180 Doctor of Medicine (MD) degrees.
  • The School of Dental Medicine, located in Newark has a current enrollment of over 400 pre- doctoral students and nearly 100 post-graduate students and awards more than 100 Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degrees, 20 Master degrees, and 25 post- graduate Certificates each year.
  • The Robert Wood Johnson Medical School is located in Piscataway/New Brunswick and Camden and maintains a current enrollment of more than 620 students. The Medical School awards more than 160 Doctor of Medicine (MD) degrees each year.
  • The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, Newark, Piscataway and Stratford, which enrolls more than 1,290 students, awards more than 300 degrees each year.
  • The School of Health Related Professions with locations in Newark, Scotch Plains, Piscataway and Stratford has a total enrollment of approximately 1,550 students in single degree, joint certifications, and joint degree programs, awarding over 400 degrees each year.
  • The School of Nursing with locations in Newark and Stratford has a total current enrollment of more than 1,625 students in stand-alone and joint degree programs awarding more than 225 Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and 150 Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degrees each year, as well as nearly 50 doctorates in Nursing.
  • The School of Public Health with locations in Piscataway/New Brunswick and Newark was established in 1,998 as the University’s eighth school. The School of public health has current enrollment of more than 400 students awarding more than 100 Master of Public Health (MPH), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Doctor of Public Health (D.Ph.) degrees every year.

Master of Public Health

Public Health has been defined as “the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through the organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, public and private, communities and individuals.” The optimization of health across communities and populations requires the use of a variety of disciplines including biostatistics, environmental and occupational health, epidemiology, health education, and health systems and policy.
Students of the MPH degree must complete 45 credits including 15 credits in core areas of public health including: Health Education and Behavioral Science in Public Health, Health Systems and Policy, Introduction to Biostatistics, Introduction to Environmental Health, and Principles and Methods of Epidemiology. Additionally they must choose 9 – 15 credits of courses required by the specific department:

  • Students enrolled on the Newark Campus may concentrate in Dental Public Health, Quantitative Methods, Epidemiology & Biostatistics, or Urban Health Administration.
  • Students enrolled on the New Brunswick Campus may choose a specialization in one of the following: Biostatistics, Environmental & Occupational Health, Epidemiology, Health Education & behavioral science, or Health Systems & Policy.
  • Students enrolled on the Stratford Campus may concentrate in Health Systems & Policy.

Master of Public Health in Biostatistics

Biostatistics emphasizes concepts fundamental to the scientific method and the applications in biomedical data collection, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of results. Biostatistics study incorporates the design and analysis of experimental studies including those in clinical trials, and observational studies, the theory of probability and statistics, and statistical computing. This field is a fundamental skill for those pursuing careers in public health, clinical practice and research. The Master of Public Health in Biostatistics provides students with the quantitative, analytic and research skills necessary to become effectual biostatisticians, policymakers, program administrators, public health researchers and public health practitioners. Students choosing to concentrate in Biostatistics will gain the skills in quantitative and analytic skills to develop and apply statistical reasoning and methods to address analyzing and solving problems in public health and population-based research. MPH students with biostatistics as a concentration will have a broad view of the applied methods. Competencies for graduates of the MPH curriculum in Biostatistics are the following (as stated by the University):

  • Ability to apply basic probability theory and standard statistical methods to solve problems relevant to biomedical, clinical, and public health research
  • Use statistical computer packages to organize, analyze, and report collected data
  • Review and critique statistical methods and interpretations presented in published research studies, presentations, or reports
  • Integrate relevant scientific background to design experimental and observational studies in biomedical, clinical, and public health research
  • Communicate results of statistical analyses in writing and orally

Master of Public Health in Dental Public Health

The Master of Public Health (MPH) in Dental Public Health allows graduates the skills to become skilled and committed dental health professionals prepared with a broad base knowledge of health problems and health delivery. Graduates of the program are prepared to become professional leaders in community oral health promotion, oral disease prevention and oral health research programs. The curriculum provides opportunities for the student to select an area of concentration, including:

  1. Oral Epidemiology – focus on distribution and determinants of oral diseases
  2. Public Policy and Oral Health Services Administration – Understanding of the implications of public health policy on the structure, process and outcome of the oral health delivery system

Student in the MPH in dental public health must complete 45 credits of academic work including:

  • Fifteen credits of core coursework
  • Six credits of fieldwork
  • Fifteen credits of required courses
  • Nine credits of Elective Courses

Master of Public Health in Environmental and Occupational Health

The Master of Public Health (MPH) in Environmental and Occupational Health allows students to become qualified professionals with expertise in environmental and occupational health. Coursework provides identification of hazards, the recognition of at-risk populations and the prevention of exposure and the strategies used for controlling exposure and preventing disease. Students of the Master of Public Health (MPH) in environmental and occupational health degree must complete 45 credits of academic work including:

  • Fifteen credits of core coursework
  • Six credits of fieldwork
  • Fifteen credits of required courses
  • Nine credits of Elective Courses

Competencies for the program upon graduation include the following:

  • Describe the major environmental/occupational health problems to the general public as well as specific communities within that population
  • Explain the basic mechanism of toxicology and dose-response regarding environmental/occupational toxicants
  • Describe the federal and state regulatory programs that relate to environmental and worker protection
  • Develop a testable model of environmental/occupational exposures and adverse health outcomes
  • Specify current quantitative risk assessment approaches and methods for a particular hazard or risk in a community

Master of Public Health in Epidemiology

Epidemiologists are Public Health Professionals who identify root causes of disease; advance new epidemiologic methods; identify effective public health interventions and provide data required for setting priorities in the field of public health. Students in the Master of Public Health (MPH) in Epidemiology degree must complete 45 credits of academic work including:

  1. Fifteen credits of core coursework
  2. Six credits of fieldwork
  3. Fifteen credits of required courses
  4. Nine credits of Elective Courses

Competencies for the program upon graduation include the following:

  • Analyze epidemiologic literature to assess its strengths and weaknesses in order to determine if conclusions are supported
  • Use epidemiologic techniques in quantitative assessment of patterns and changes in disease occurrence
  • Formulation of a specific hypothesis to determine an appropriate study design and analysis plan
  • Design, implement, and assess ordinary data collection systems for public health research
  • Design and implement quality control methods during data entry and analysis
  • Analyze and interpret appropriate epidemiologic data, including large national and state level datasets
  • Communicate and present findings of study to professional audiences

Master of Public Health in Health Education and Behavioral Science

The curriculum for the Master of Public Health (MPH) in Health Education and Behavioral Science prepares MPH Students with the skills and knowledge needed to:

  • Formulate policy
  • Assess and define health and educational needs of target populations via diagnostic and consulting skills
  • Develop and implement health programs that are theory based
  • Design and conduct program evaluations
  • Design and conduct research

Students are prepared with skills to plan, implement and evaluate health promotion and intervention programs in settings that range from hospitals to industries, schools and communities. Students in the Master of Public Health (MPH) in Health Education and Behavioral Science degree must complete 45 credits of academic work. Upon completion of the program students will be have the following competencies (as stated by the University):

  • Understand the importance and use of public health policy in health behavior change and health promotion
  • Use of various techniques required in conducting needs assessments of diverse populations
  • Utilization of health behavior theories and models for understanding health behaviors
  • Ability to design, implement, conduct, and evaluate health education/promotion programs in diverse settings
  • Develop and assess health education materials, methods, and programs
  • Application of management techniques in health education and health promotion setting
  • Comprehend public health research pertaining to the principles of research in behavioral science

Master of Public Health in Health Systems and Policy

Students in the Master of Public Health (MPH) in Health Systems and Policy degree must complete 45 credits of academic work. Graduating students will have the following competencies (as stated by the University):

  • Employ economic theories, concepts, and methodology in analyzing and evaluating current health care issues and problems
  • Assess community health needs, disparities, and the health care delivery system within the context of social, cultural, political, legal, and economic forces
  • Ability to apply quantitative and qualitative research methods to analyze issues in health service and policy
  • Evaluate and define public health policies and practices and the legal and ethical implications for individuals and populations
  • Identify management theories in the delivery of health services and evaluation of health system performances.
