University of Missouri

Department of Health Management and Informatics

The University of Missouri, founded in 1839, is a public institution with more than 34,000 students currently enrolled and with over 271,000 alumni worldwide. The Residential Master of Health Administration

The fifty-four credit hour Residential Master of Health Administration program prepares the student to create the future of Healthcare by developing their skills and knowledge in healthcare organizations using evidence-based solutions and to prepare early and mid-career leaders to effect position changes in their organizations. Coursework for the program provides students with a strong grounding in finance, accounting, economics and statistics combining a curriculum focusing on the management of complex organizations within integrated health systems. Students gain insight and knowledge in organizational strategy and change, process improvement, interdisciplinary team management, integrated information systems, and financial risk management. Graduates pursue careers in leadership within medical group practices, managed-care organizations, integrated health systems, long-term care facilities, and hospitals. During the summer between the first and second years of the program, students are required to complete a twelve-week internship and students can create a concentration area of study by choosing courses as professional electives.

Executive Master of Health Administration

The forty-two credit hour Executive Master of Health Administration Program consists of twelve credits of core courses (3 hours each) and an individual 6-credit research project. The program is designed to provide quality management training to prepare practicing professionals for executive leadership positions in a wide range of healthcare environments. Candidates for the program include physicians, nurses, other clinical professionals, and finance, information, and human resource executives with at least three years of clinical or administrative experience. The program format combines monthly weekend sessions on campus during regular semesters, independent study, and distance learning to allow working professionals to continue full-time employment. Students in the Executive Program enroll in three courses during each of four regular semesters and complete an individual research project over two summers.

Residential Master of Science Health Informatics

The Residential Master of Science in Health Informatics program prepares students to enter careers in a variety of settings within healthcare organizations including hospitals, clinics, pharmaceutical companies, insurance companies, research, government, and private agencies. Curriculum focus is on understanding, design, and development of information technologies in today’s health systems. Coursework includes computer science, health, and biomedical informatics, health management, health information systems, information storage, retrieval and management, and research methods and outcomes analysis. Special areas of concentration include electronic health-care records, information systems for managing health, telemedicine, and bioinformatics. Students of the Master’s Degree program may choose a three-credit summer internship (between the first and second year in the program) and although an internship is strongly recommended it is not required.

Executive Master of Science in Health Informatics

The Executive Master of Science in Health Informatics Program is designed for those self-motivated professionals already working in the healthcare and information technology fields to gain a deeper understanding of the potential and complexity of advanced information technology as it applies to today’s healthcare organizations. Graduates gain the skills and knowledge for designing, developing, implementing and evaluating information technologies to improve operational systems. Candidates for the program include physicians, nurses, other clinical professionals, and information technology managers of health care organizations with at least three years of technical, clinical, or administrative experience. Future careers for graduates of the program can include Chief Information Officer, systems developer, software designer or consultants. Coursework includes computer science, health and biomedical informatics, and health management. The program format includes three on-campus weekends per semester with online course work and independent study to allow working professionals to maintain full-time employment while completing the two-year program.

Robert J. Trulaske Sr. College of Business and Department of Health Management and Informatics

The University of Missouri (also known as Mizzou), founded in 1839 in Columbia Missouri, is the first public university west of the Mississippi River and the first state university in Thomas Jefferson’s Louisiana Purchase territory. In the 2013-14 school year, the University offered 85 online degree options and nearly 1,000 online courses. The University of Missouri College of Business was established in 1914 as a professional school of business and offers a variety of curriculum that prepares students for responsibilities in business, government, and society as a whole. Its business programs were among the first in the nation to be accredited. The Robert J. Trulaske, Sr. College of Business at the University of Missouri’s mission is “to prepare students to succeed in the world of business and advance the body of knowledge about the world of business.”

Dual Master of Business Administration/Master of Health Administration

The joint Master of Business Administration and Master of Health Administration degree (MBA/MHA) program is administered through the Robert J. Trulaske Sr. College of Business and the Health Management and Informatics Department of the School of Medicine. The program is designed for students who wish to earn an MBA degree and an MHA degree simultaneously. Each degree earned separately would take two years for completion. The dual degree program allows students to graduate with both degrees in as little as three years. Curriculum is designed so business essentials are addressed by courses in at least one of the departments, and specialized courses are pursued in the upper levels. Dual program waivers for MBA classes are based upon equivalent offerings in the MHA program (e.g. Business Law is waived and Health Care Law is taken). During one summer students must complete a twelve-week internship in an approved health organization. MBA/MHA graduates assume leadership positions in private health systems, physician group practices, corporate health systems, home health agencies, nursing homes, and public health agencies.

Joint Master of Business Administration/Master of Public Health

Washington University’s Master of Business Administration and Master of Public Health (MBA/MPH) dual degree program is designed to train multidisciplinary managers with expertise and leadership skills to incorporate the worlds of business, public policy, and medicine. The MBA/MPH program combines the foundational courses of Washington University’s Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Public Health (MPH) degrees. Students start in August and attend the first full year in either the MBA or MPH program. Students participate in a summer internship after the first year of MBA courses and a practicum after the first year of MPH coursework. Combining these two graduate programs into a dual degree allows students to complete the required credits in two and a half to three years, as opposed to four years. Applicants are required to be accepted into the existing MBA and MPH programs and must apply for the dual degree before the end of the first year of study in either graduate program.

The 36 credit hours required for the Master of Health Administration (MHA) includes the following courses: Organization and Management in Health Administration, Organizational Planning and Change in Health Administration, Human Resources Management in Health Administration, Financial Management in Health Administration, Financial Analysis in Health Administration, Statistics for Health Administration, Issues in Health Policy, Health Administration Law and Integrated Studies in Health Administration.
