Located in Oxford, Mississippi, the University of Mississippi (known as Ole Miss) is a public coeducational research institution founded in 1844. University of Mississippi

The UM Medical Center

Located in Jackson Mississippi, The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) is the only academic health science center in Mississippi. The Medical center includes six health science schools: medicine, nursing, dentistry, health related professions, graduate studies and pharmacy. Current enrollment is more than 2,800 students. Master of Health Informatics and Information Management

The Online Master of Health Informatics and Information Management (MHIIM) program prepares students to learn the skills to develop information systems for quality patient care, medical research, facility reimbursement, health planning, and health care evaluation to enter careers in the current health care environment. Graduates of the MHIIM program have in depth knowledge in administration of healthcare data resources, health care data security oversight, strategic and operational information planning, analysis of clinical data, clinical classification systems, medical vocabularies, master patient index systems, clinical decision support systems, development and implementing of information systems including electronic health records. With two tracks available to pursue in MHIIM program students have to choice to emphasize either health informatics or health information management depending on specific career goals. The Health Information Management (HIM) track is specific to management and administration of healthcare data and information systems. Students may also elect to pursue eligibility for the RHIA certification exam of the American Health Information Management Association through electives taken in the HIM track. The MHIIM is offered on a three-semester-per-year basis and is designed for part-time, non-traditional students and is typically completed in two years.

University of Southern Mississippi

Located in Hattiesburg Mississippi, The University of Southern Mississippi (known as Southern Miss) is a public research institution founded in 1910. Master of Public Health

The School of Public Health is the first accredited Master of Public Health (MPH) program in the state of Mississippi. The mission for the Master of Public Health program “is to advance the public’s health through education, research, and service with a focus on preparing students to become competent public health practitioners and/or administrators”. Student can choose from three public health concentrations to meet their professional goals and include:

  • Epidemiology and Biostatistics

  • Health Policy and Administration

The Master of Public Health (MPH) program consists of forty-five credit hours including a nine-hour internship. Curriculum includes core courses to allow students an understanding of factors affecting community health, organizing, financing, delivery, and administration of health services and the methods for monitoring, analyzing, and assessing community health needs. Graduates enter top level careers in health administration, research, or education in settings that can include hospitals, long term care, managed care organizations, state and local heath departments, and industry and government agencies.

Master of Public Health with Concentration in Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Students in the Master of Public Health (MPH) with Concentration in Epidemiology and Biostatistics program are prepared with the knowledge and skills of epidemiology and biostatistics, skills that are critical for careers in public health research including disease prevention and control, healthcare delivery, and health management. The concentration prepares students with an understanding of the epidemiology of the distribution and determinants of disease and other health-related situations in human populations, and developing methods and analytical skills for study design and analysis of data. Graduates are qualified for careers in health service or research positions in local health departments, hospitals, nursing care facilities, academia, private industry, and government agencies that include Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Courses include: Chronic Disease Epidemiology Research Methods, Infectious Disease Epidemiology, Biostatistics II, Data Management and Analysis in Public Health, Statistical Analysis System (SAS) and Advanced Biostatistics Methods for Public Health.

Master of Public Health with Concentration in Health Education

Health education focuses on preventing disease and promoting health for individuals, groups, and the community. The Master of Public Health (MPH) with Concentration in Health Education prepares practitioners in Public Health with the skills for planning, implementation, evaluation, and sustaining efforts in improving population health and eliminating disparities in health. Graduates of the program will become more efficient in promoting healthy behaviors and lifestyles through education in order to empower people for healthier living. Courses for the concentration include: Health Education Methods, Health Disparities in the United States, Health Education among Rural Populations, Community Health Education Planning, Public Health and Marketing, Community Organization for Health Education, and Qualitative Research Methods in Public Health.

Master of Public Health with Concentration in Health Policy and Administration

Health Administrators are responsible for a wide range of activities essential for the effective and efficient delivery of health services and programs Students of the Master of Public Health (MPH) with Concentration in Health Policy and Administration gain the skills to assess population health needs, design policies and interventions, and assure the effectiveness of community programs and services. The program allows students a basic understanding of public health program planning, evaluation and health policy with concepts in epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health and health behavior. Public health administrators plan, implement, participate, evaluate, collaborate policy development and public and professional communication. Careers for graduates of the MPH with Concentration in Health Policy and Administration program include: All levels of government, hospital systems, Healthcare organizations, health maintenance organizations and industrial medical care offices, Nonprofits, Public health advocacy and other community-based organizations. Executive Master of Public Health

The Executive Master of Public Health (MPH) is designed for those healthcare professionals with at least three years of work experience who need the skills and knowledge to manage staff members, organizations and health systems. Students in the Executive MPH include those working in public health, hospital administrators, physicians, pharmacists, dentists, nurses, therapists, social workers, nursing facility administrators, and consultants. The forty-two credit (fourteen course) Executive MPH format requires attending class one weekend per month (Friday & Saturday) with all other coursework available in an online format.
