Master of Science in Health Informatics and Information Management

The Master of Science in Health Informatics and Information Management (MS/HIM) degree program is offered through the Department of Health Services and Information Management. The MS/HIIM degree provides a cross section of the principles of computer and information science and technology with the fundamentals of health services management and administration. Graduates of the program are prepared with the skills and knowledge to enter careers in informatics and information management, working efficiently with clinicians and health services administrators to develop clear and effective health information strategies for health care organizations. The degree requires 30 credit hours of core coursework and either a 9-credit health information concentration or 15 credits of registered health information administrator concentration. Master of Public Administration / Community Health Administration Certificate

The Master of Public Administration (MPA) with a Community Health Administration Certificate is offered through the College of Allied Health Sciences, Department of Health Services. The Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree is designed to provide students with core management skills needed to enter administrative careers in the public (including legislative, executive, and judicial agencies) and not-for-profit agencies. The mission of the Master of Public Administration Program as stated by the university is to “prepare students to become professionals who can meet the needs and the challenges of public service w the skills to conduct scholarly and applied research in public administration and policy, and engage students and faculty in partnerships with governmental, non-profit, professional, and educational organizations”. Brody School of Medicine

East Carolina University, also known as East Carolina, is a public coed research university located in Greeneville, North Carolina. Founded in 1907 as a teacher training school, it is the third largest university in North Carolina. The university offers more than 100 bachelor’s degree programs, 85 master’s degree programs, 21 doctoral degree program and 62 certificate programs. East Carolina is listed by Forbes magazine as a “Best Buy” and the 2015 edition of US News and World Reports rated East Carolina as the 181st Best National University. The Brody School of Medicine is the medical school of East Carolina University is the fourth oldest medical school in North Carolina. Brody’s mission (as stated by the university) is “to increase the supply of primary care physicians to serve the state, to enhance the access of minority and disadvantaged students in obtaining a medical education, and to improve health status of citizens in eastern North Carolina”.

Master of Public Health

The 45-credit Master of Public Health (MPH) program is offered at the Brody School of Medicine in the Department of Public Health. The (MPH) coursework emphasizes the practical aspects of public health to prepare students future careers in promoting community awareness about injury, violence prevention, communicable diseases and other issues that affect health and safety. The MPH program requires:

  1. Twenty-four credits of core coursework including interdisciplinary rural health diagnosis and planning, fundamentals of environmental health, public health practice, ethics and law in public health, behavioral science and health education
  2. Six credits in applications: Field Placement (includes 240 hours of service) and a professional paper (serves as a capstone, applied learning experience).
  3. Fifteen credits in one of three specific area of concentrations: epidemiology, health administration, or health behavior

Future careers with a MPH include: health officer, occupational health and safety specialist, environmental health specialist, public health investigator, public health analyst, public health policy coordinator, public health educator, public health emergency preparedness and response coordinator, research analyst and epidemiologist

Medical Doctor/Master of Public Health

There is an increasing need for well-trained physicians with a comprehensive understanding and appreciation of public health issues. The Master of Public Health (MPH) degree program trains students who are concurrently enrolled in professional schools and health professionals seeking the opportunity to pursue training in public health. The MPH degree requires 45 credits for completion and can be completed by medical students by taking MPH course work during a leave of absence between the second and third year of medical school (as well as during summer vacations). A leave of absence may be granted to students in the Brody School of Medicine to pursue the MPH degree, who have been accepted into the MPH program, and who are in good standing in the medical school. The MD/MPH program prepares students for careers as physicians in the public health field and allows them the skills needed them to diagnose health problems and risk factors of individuals and communities.

The Godbold School of Business

Gardner Webb University, originally founded in 1905 as a Baptist Institution (Boiling Springs High School), is a regional coed university awarding bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees.
