The following concentrations are available with the MPH degree for specialization:

The Health Systems Management Concentration

The Health Systems Management Concentration prepares those students seeking careers as managers by providing them with the knowledge required to make improvements of the healthcare delivery services in diverse settings. Students are introduced to the fundamental areas of management within health services and include a professional practicum experience preparing them for entry-level roles as managers in healthcare settings. Coursework emphasizes management in planning, financing, implementing, evaluating, and maintaining complex systems. The concentration in Health Systems Management prepares graduates for careers in managing within the public or private sector.

Health Policy Concentration

The Health Policy Concentration provides students with a basic foundation in processes in health policy, analytical skills to help develop and evaluate health policies and concepts and issues of health policies. The Health Policy concentration offers graduates career opportunities domestically and internationally in health policy in government, research institutes, international health organizations, consulting firms, and organizations that affect health policy. Students will be introduced to a basic understanding of how globalization affects determinants of health, the health status of populations, health policy and dealing with health and disease.

International Health Programs

The International Health Programs Concentration provides coursework to prepare students for work in a particular disease or health area including:

  • Population health and development
  • Management and treatment of Malaria
  • Management and treatment of HIV
  • Reproductive health

This concentration prepares graduate students to apply a variety of quantitative and qualitative approaches in providing technical assistance or in improving the health of populations in diverse cultures.

For completion of IHP concentration, students are required to take eighteen credit hours of core courses (eighteen credits), five IHP courses (eleven credit hours), and two required topical area courses (four credits, selected from eight possible courses). Students will select an additional twelve hours of elective credit hours in focus area specific to their area of specialty including: M&E, reproductive health, population dynamics, development, program management, malaria and HIV. Students are also required to complete a practicum in the area of international health as part of this concentration. Graduates of this concentration enter careers as entry level project or program managers in community, state and federal departments of health, private volunteer organizations (PVO), religious organizations, federal organizations in domestic and international areas including Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) or the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Medical Organizations and Systems Concentration

The Medical Organizations and Systems (MOS) Concentration allows students with clinical aspirations to assume roles of leadership in global delivery of health services improving the health of individuals and globally. Students will gain skills in application of population based and public health findings and principles to assess individuals and groups at risk for disease and injury. Students will turn public health principles into action and make recommendations for improving health within clinical practice environment through identification of the theory and applied bases of economics in health care in the delivery of healthcare to populations. Students will also learn to provide better access to care of populations aid in the organizing of medical service delivery organizations.

Juris Doctor /Master of Health Administration Dual Degree

The Juris Doctor (JD) /Master of Health Administration (MHA) Dual Degree Program enables graduates to approach health and legal issues in an interdisciplinary method. This dual degree option allows provides career opportunities including practicing of health law within large, private firms or executive level positions in healthcare organizations. Members of law firms who specialize in healthcare delivery issues, internal legal counsel, and attorneys dealing with the complicated regulatory environment within the healthcare system in the public and private sectors understand the importance of the knowledge of Healthcare management to maintain efficiency. Benefits of this program include the ability to obtain both degrees more quickly (four years) than if obtained separately (five years). Students also are required an administrative internship between their 4th and 5th semesters to complete the program requirements. Students complete a total of 127 credit hours (including an internship) to complete the MHA/JD dual degree.

Master of Business Administration/Master of Health Administration

With Healthcare as the largest industry in the U.S. and continuing to expand in both size and scope, The Master of Business Administration/Master of Health Administration dual degree provides a strong foundation in business management combined with a specialized knowledge of healthcare. Students with the knowledge, skills, and applied experience of the dual-degree have a distinct edge and great flexibility in shaping a dynamic and meaningful career. In addition to management positions in a wide range of healthcare organizations, graduates enter positions in the pharmaceutical industry, health insurance, management consulting, state and federal policy agencies and financial institutions.

Medical Doctor/Master of Public Health

The Master of Public Health (MPH) is a degree providing its graduates for opportunities in the field of Public Health. With an increasing need for well-trained physicians with a comprehensive understanding and appreciation of public health issues, Physicians who are awarded an MPH will have the ability to work in international and governmental agencies, clinics, health departments and research centers, as well as teach at schools of public health. The dual MD/MPH Program can be completed within five-years and students have the option of specializing in one of three concentrations:

  • Community and Population Health
  • Epidemiology
  • Global Health

The MD/MPH program provides healthcare training for individuals and populations while providing a core foundation to patient care. The program is designed to encompasses diverse and challenged populations domestically and internationally; in-depth training in population and public health knowledge, behaviors, and skills; and allow students to achieve their specific population interest with a degree concentration in the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. MD/MPH students are required to complete five core courses (15 total credit hours) including biostatistics, environmental health, epidemiology, management, and behavioral science. The majority of required Core courses are available online but not every core course is offered online every semester.

Located in New Orleans, on the banks of Lake Pontchartrain (about 20 minutes from the French Quarter), The University of New Orleans (UNO) is a public institution founded in 1956. Master of Science in Healthcare Management

The thirty-three credit Master of Science in Healthcare Management (MSHCM) program at the University of New Orleans is available in an executive and traditional format. The executive track program offers classes in a weekend format while the traditional program offers classes on weekday evenings on a part-time or full-time basis. The objective of the program is to “survey the general business principles and practical implications then connect those principles and practical implications to health care settings”. The MSHCM program allows those choosing careers as healthcare professionals to advance in their current careers, network with other health care professionals, and increase basic understanding of business fundamentals in application to the healthcare industry. Coursework allows students the exposure to essential skills needed to bridge the world of healthcare with the world of finance, marketing, accounting, and management to manage at an executive level within the public and private healthcare sector.

Master of Business Administration with a Concentration in Healthcare Management

The Master of Business Administration Degree Program prepares students for top-level administrative positions in the private and public sectors of business. Graduates are prepared in skills needed in business administration and can also choose a concentration in a specific area of study. The program emphasizes developing critical analytical abilities and students will learn about the finances, organization, and infrastructure of today’s healthcare system. Students learn the skills to become proficient in leadership skills, making critical decisions and apply solid business principles to medical organizations. Coursework includes analyzing policies, regulations and compliance issues within the healthcare industry. Students will also explore the many legal and ethical issues facing the healthcare industry to propose solutions to real-life situations. The MBA Program consists of fifty-seven credit hours (twenty four credit hours of Foundation Courses and thirty three credit hours of Advanced Core Courses). The program includes a capstone project, “Seminar in Business Policies,” integrating functions of all fields of business administration and emphasizing strategy development and implementation giving students the viewpoint of the operation of a business enterprise.
