The Master of Science in Information Architecture and Knowledge Management in Health Informatics

The Master of Science in Information Architecture and Knowledge Management in Health Informatics provides skills and knowledge required to evaluate, implement, and utilize technology to manage information that relates to patient care delivery processes, including clinical, financial, technological and enterprise-wide skills and methods. There are three components comprising the health informatics discipline including:

  1. The Information Systems component has a focus on information systems analysis, design, implementation, management, and leadership
  2. The Informatics component includes a study of structure, function and transfer of information, socio-technical aspects of health computing, and human/computer interaction.
  3. The Information Technology component emphasizes computer networks, database and systems administration, security, and programming – drawing from computer science, the clinical sciences, social and organizational influences, and business practices.

Health informatics professionals are prepared to enter careers in managerial, analytical, consultative and executive roles. Coursework for the Master of Science program is offered online to allow flexibility in learning format. Students can focus on one course at a time but still take two standard (but compressed) courses per semester. The MS program requires 36 credits (12 courses) and can be completed in as little as two years.

Kent State University

The College of Public Health

Kent State University is a public research university. The College of Public Health at Kent State was established in 2009 with a mission to “educate and train students to meet the current and projected shortage of public health professionals in Ohio and the nation”. The college is just one of only two schools of public health in the state of Ohio, and it was the first to offer a Bachelor of Science in Public Health. Academic programs combine theory with practice allowing graduates to gain the knowledge and skills in addressing the health challenges of our current society’s health issues. Partnerships with local health departments, community organizations, health care institutions, and businesses allows students to experience real-world experiences within the field of public health.

Master of Public Health in Biostatistics

The Master of Public Health (MPH) in Biostatistics teaches students using a curriculum grounded in health data collection, storage, retrieval, analysis, and interpretation. Graduates of this innovative program will possess the skills and knowledge to use statistical methods in the design and surveys that are health-related and experiments to improve health. Research interests for faculty at the program include applying bio-statistical analysis to understand critical health problems including adolescent substance abuse, HIV/AIDS, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. Graduates of the MPH in Biostatistics program are prepared for careers in hospital systems, pharmaceutical companies, state and local health departments, federal health agencies and biotechnology companies to analyze the effectiveness of new drugs and interventions, identify risk factors for disease and develop effective prevention strategies. Curriculum for the MPH program includes a minimum of 46 credits including: 19 credits of Core MPH coursework, 15 credits of Concentration, 6 credits of electives and a Practicum and Capstone experience (6 credits).

Master of Public Health in Environmental Health Sciences

The Master of Public Health in Environmental Health Sciences program uses a curriculum that helps students to understand the ways that environmental factors (including biological, physical and chemical factors) can have an effect on the health of a population. Students also gain skills and knowledge needed in developing practical strategies for alleviating the effects of harmful environmental hazards. Coursework prepares students with the following competencies:

  • Conduct laboratory analysis of environmental contaminants
  • Develop plans preparing communities to respond to man-made /natural disasters
  • Incorporate health promoting principles into urban design
  • Develop safety plans for companies.

Students enrolled in this program benefit from ongoing faculty research in bio-preparedness, microbiology, and occupational health and safety. Graduates are prepared to enter environmental health sciences careers in research and clinical laboratories, environmental protection agencies, manufacturing companies, emergency management agencies, and state and local health departments. The program requires 46 credits for completion including 19 credits of MPH core, 15 credits of concentration, 6 credits of electives, a Practicum and Capstone experience (6 credits).

Master of Public Health in Epidemiology

The Master of Public Health in Epidemiology curriculum arms students with the skills to analyze the distribution and determinants of disease, disabilities, and death in populations. Graduates will have the following skills:

  • Apply quantitative and qualitative methods to investigate disease outbreaks
  • Determine the fundamental relationships between environmental and biological factors
  • Conduct studies projecting health trends in populations

Students in the Epidemiology Concentration reap the benefit of faculty’s research in bio-preparedness, public health surveillance systems, chronic disease, cancer and infectious disease epidemiology. Graduates are prepared for careers in research positions in universities, medical schools and pharmaceutical companies, as disease prevention specialists in hospital systems and as surveillance managers in state and local health departments.

Master of Public Health in Health Policy and Management

The Master of Public Health in Health Policy and Management trains students to address public health risks and develop effective health services delivery models. It is an interdisciplinary program that incorporates health services research, health policy analysis, and health care planning and management. Given the active research of the college’s faculty in identifying service gaps and in developing evidence-based practices and policy analysis, students emerge with strong skills in health services management, alternative models of service financing and strategies for improving services. Career opportunities for graduates include administrative and management positions in hospitals, clinics, state and local health departments, nursing homes and mental health facilities; policy analyst positions in health planning organizations and governmental agencies; and planning and management positions in health maintenance organizations and health insurance companies. This concentration is offered fully online in addition to onsite on the Kent Campus. A blended/hybrid option is also available focusing on leadership and organizational change.

Master of Public Health in Social and Behavioral Sciences

The Master of Public Health in Social and Behavioral Sciences program provides students with a core understanding of the theoretical basis of health behavior in populations across the life course to apply theoretical principles in designing effective strategies for health behavior management. Coursework highlights the behavioral, social, and environmental factors that relate to individual and population health and health disparities over the life span. Students gain the skills and knowledge to design and evaluate public health interventions needed to improve health for families, workplaces, communities, and law enforcement/criminal justice settings. The research of faculty at the MPH School in the areas of childhood obesity, violence and injury prevention, substance abuse prevention, and chronic disease prevention, allows students to work on large-scale externally funded prevention research. Graduates are prepared to enter careers in health education and promotion; program design and evaluation; and prevention program developments for state and local health departments, workplace health promotion programs, hospitals, international health agencies, mental health centers, and non-profit organizations.

Master of Public Health in Prevention Science

The Master of Public Health in Prevention Science provides a curriculum in both traditional and innovative areas of prevention science including etiology, intervention design and evaluation, data collection and analysis, community-based participatory research, and implementation science. The interdisciplinary coursework provides a study of the methods that helps promote healthy behaviors in populations across the life course. Graduates will have knowledge in theoretical and substantive perspectives in order to conduct research within systems of the family, health and education, workplace, community, and law enforcement/criminal justice settings. The faculty’s research in the College of Public Health provides students an opportunity to work on community-based prevention research.

The Jetter School of Business

Founded in 1968 by the Church of the Nazarene, Mount Vernon Nazarene University (MVNU) is a private Christian Liberal Arts College located in Mount Vernon Ohio with satellite campuses located in the surrounding area. Mount Vernon awards bachelor’s and master’s degrees in traditional and non-traditional formats to allow flexibility in educational needs. The current enrollment is 1,773 students.
