Master’s in Healthcare Management Degrees in Idaho

Idaho, located in the northwestern region of the United States, is home to many accredited Master’s Degree programs in Healthcare Management. Residents referred to as “Idahoans” will be required to complete at least a Bachelor’s level Degree to work in the field of Healthcare Administration and Management in Idaho. Those seeking more advanced management positions will also be required to pass a licensing exam. Although a Master’s Degree in Healthcare is not always required, it can help to secure a better job. Boise State University

College of Health Sciences

Located in downtown Boise, Boise State University (BSU) is a public research institution with nearly 23,000 students enrolled. Founded in 1932 by the Episcopal Church, Boise State has the largest enrollment amongst all higher education institutions in the state of Idaho. BSU offers 201 degrees with more than 100 graduate programs available. The College of Health Sciences offers Graduate programs including a Master of Health Science in Health Promotion, Health Policy, Environmental Health, Health Services Leadership and Health Research as well as graduate certificates in health services leadership, addiction studies, and gerontological studies. Students participate in a curriculum that combines classroom sessions (traditional, hybrid, and web-based), with an internship and practicum to allow them to experience critical thinking, clinical skill development, and adaptation to the ever-changing healthcare environment. Students are allowed a close relationship with some of the healthcare partners including hospitals, local, state and regionals agencies and non-profits in the community.

Master’s of Health Sciences

The Master’s of Health Science (MHS) program is a Master’s Degree Program that’s allows the proficiency needed to make significant contributions in the overall public health of the community. The Master’s program offers preparation for those with Bachelor’s degrees to further their education before entering the workforce. For those who are already working in the public health field, a Master’s degree allows them to achieve further success in their careers in public health agencies, healthcare organizations and in private practices. Curriculum includes core studies on current trends in public health issues and the ability to concentrate in one of five areas of concentration:

  • The MHS with an Environmental Health Emphasis is a three credit hour program that outlines the interaction of humans and the effect of biological, chemical, and physical factors in our environment and the affect on the health of the community. Public health professionals in environmental health evaluate work places, homes, and other environments for the potential risk factors for hazardous materials. They study to assess the role that the environment plays in potential of diseases including asthma, lung disease, and cancer. Information studied in this emphasis including air and water quality, climate change, food safety, and natural disasters.
  • The MHS with an Evaluation and Research emphasis is critical to public health programs both locally and also globally to assess, plan, implement and evaluate health education, promotion, and disease prevention programs.
  • The MHS with a Health Policy emphasis provides students with the skills and knowledge necessary to formulate and implement solutions to complex problems within the healthcare system. Coursework identifies links between health policy and effective management, including concepts and skills from management, policy analysis, and finance. This concentration allows professionals to move forward into careers as managers in healthcare organizations or as analysts for public or private organizations related to the financing, delivery, or evaluation of healthcare services.
  • The MHS with a Health Promotion emphasis is a three credit hour concentration including the opportunity to learn to promote public health in a variety of settings in the population. Focuses of the curriculum include preventing disease and disabilities in healthy populations and promoting healthy lifestyles. Possible areas of employment include schools, fitness and wellness organizations, nursing care and public and non-profit agencies. Other issues discussed are nutrition, exercise, tobacco, alcohol, and substance use, as well as health care utilization.
  • Finally, the MHS with a Health Services Leadership emphasis is designed for both health professionals pursuing careers in state and local health agencies, health care institutions and in private practice, but also for the more traditional students wanting to prepare for professional leadership roles. Students gain competency in the knowledge and skills management positions in health related organizations. The curriculum exposes students to the issues in relation to interpersonal dynamics in the workplace and the economics related to the healthcare delivery system.

The diverse nature of this Master’s program provides students with a broad based curriculum and also research opportunity in a diversity of areas in public health.

Idaho State University

The College of Business

With its main campus located in Pocatello Idaho, in the southeast corner of the state, Idaho State University (ISU) a doctoral research high and teaching institution founded in 1901. With current enrollment of almost 14,300 students, ISU is the state’s designated lead institution in health professions and medical education. Idaho State University uses a semester-based academic calendar and its ranking in the 2014 edition of Best Colleges is National Universities, Tier 2. The College of Business focuses on the education of students in the basic concepts of business disciplines and to define issues affecting the economic development of the region and state. The College of Business also offers programs in day or evening forum and also is available at several off-campus satellite locations.

Master of Business Administration: Health Care Administration Emphasis

Idaho State University’s Master of Business Administration (MBA) with an emphasis in Healthcare Administrations Management program prepares students to compete for advanced management or senior administration jobs within the healthcare system. Coursework in the Master’s program allows students to become competent in the legal and ethical issues facing professionals in todays ever-changing healthcare. Students learn practicality in financial and analytical skills combined with decision-making processes to assess cost, service and economic variables to influence positive outcomes. The Master’s program covers a wide range of business principles for leadership with strategic management in a global marketplace. Students are encouraged to use critical thinking and decision-making within a healthcare organization to lead and manage effectively and ethically.

Students who select an emphasis in Health Care Administration must take nine credits from the following three credit hour Healthcare Administration courses:

Students in the Kasiska School of Health Professionals enjoy a challenging curriculum under the direction of skilled and nationally recognized faculty. Master of Public Health

The goal of public health is the protection and improvement of health within the community via education, promoting more healthy lifestyle, and research for preventing injury and disease. The Master of Public Health (MPH) program at Idaho State University is meeting the needs of the public health professional to improve the health of populations through the planning, implementing, and evaluating health promotion and disease-prevention programs. The Community Health Emphasis courses include competency of core public health knowledge and skills in epidemiology, biostatistics, health care ethics, health organization and policy, health program planning and evaluation, health marketing, health education promotion, research methodology and environmental health. To meet the needs of those already working in career classes are available in an evening format and online. Master’s of Public Health classes are offered in Pocatello and Boise through distance learning. Graduates of the MPH program go forward into careers in the public sector in local, state, or federal health departments.

As Idaho works to meet the growing demand for qualified health care professionals, the job prospects in Healthcare Management and Administration services should continue to improve. With the job market in Healthcare Management expanding faster than other industries in the United States, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Handbook 2012 report predicts faster than average growth nationally in this field through 2018. Additionally the mean annual wage for medical and health services professionals in Idaho is $101,440. This is well above the national averages and those with a Master’s Degree from an accredited Healthcare Management Program can potentially earn significantly more.
