Master’s in Healthcare Management Degrees in Florida – UF-UN

Florida, with a population of over 19,552,860 in 2013, was ranked the seventh fastest growing state in the United States. This growth was seen throughout many areas of the states economy, including Healthcare. This significant growth has led to an increase in Florida Universities and Colleges offering opportunities to earn accredited Healthcare Administration and Management Degrees. While all Healthcare Managers and Administrators must hold at least a Bachelor’s degree, those with more advanced degrees will be in highest demand.

University of Florida

The College of Public Health and Health Professions

Located on a 2,000 acres campus in Gainesville Florida, the University of Florida (UF) is a public land grant, sea-grant and space grant research university and member of the State University Systems of Florida. With sixteen academic colleges The University of Florida offers 123 masters programs and seventy-six doctoral programs. It is the third largest Florida University and eighth largest single campus university in the country with 49,913 students enrolled.

The University of Florida College of Public Health and Health Professions places a focus on problem solving within the public health system as well as emphasis on individual patient care. The mission Statement of the College is “to preserve, promote and improve the health and well-being of populations, communities and individuals by fostering collaborations among public health and the health professions in education, research and service”.

Master of Business Administration/Master of Health Administration

The University of Florida offers student an option to earn a concurrent Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Health Administration (MHA) degree. This dual degree allows students to combine educational aspects of healthcare finance and economics with patient quality, safety and health policy while training in business courses in accounting, capital structure/risk and accounting. One of the highlights of this concurrent degree is the ability for graduates to seek management opportunities in a health related field such as a medical device company or pharmaceutical corporation. The Healthcare industry is one of the largest growing segments of the job market and this dual degree will allow an option for healthcare professionals a basic understanding of the business environment while developing deep based knowledge in the principals of healthcare administration.

The dual M.B.A./M.H.A. is generally completed in three years (eight semesters) in a traditional on-campus format. The dual degree program also offers the benefit of fifteen shared credits. There is an internship required during the second semester of the MHA program to provide exposure within the job market and may lead to future employment.

Master of Health Administration

The University of Florida offers a Master of Health Administration, which is a Master’s Level professional degree in Health Administration for student aspiring to pursue studies for careers in this field. The MHA degree provides students with the required skills for top-level positions in health services so they may become better and more competent managers. The program curriculum includes coursework in population health, healthcare economics, organizational behavior, and management within a healthcare organization, health policy, healthcare marketing and human resource management. This degree program is designed to give graduates greater understanding of management issues and to prepare them to enter the marketplace as senior managers with focuses on health administration at the local, state, and federal level as well as in the nonprofit sector. The Master of Health Administration (MHA) is an on-campus program designed to prepare individuals 
for management positions in the health care field.

Master of Public Health

The Master’s of Public Health (MPH) degree is a professional degree for students who are seeking a broad general academic experience in public health. Students will learn to be competent in fundamental public health disciplines, including:

  • Research design and implementation
  • Data analysis and policy analysis
  • Communications
  • Program planning and administration
  • Public health systems and the organization of health
  • Identify and analyze ethical issues in public health We recognize the importance of practical knowledge and skills for those entering the field of public health.

The University of Florida offers a two-year, forty-eight credit Master of Public Health Program. This professional degree is for students who are looking for a broad based academic background outlining the fundamentals of public health. Coursework includes research design, data and policy analysis, communications, program administration and planning and organization of heath services within the public health system. The Masters program is available either in a traditional classroom format or online only format for those students who are currently employed and are unable to take time away from their active career.

Master of Public Health – Online Program

The College of Public Health and Health Professions offers an online only program designed to earn a Master’s level degree in Public Health completely online (requiring no campus visits). Many working professionals employed in public health and related agencies and organizations as physicians, nurses, social workers, and other health professionals have schedules that will not allow them the flexibility for traditional in class programs. The curriculum focus is providing competency in core issues of public health service.

MPH students are admitted into one of six concentration areas, from which the number and type of advanced specialty course credits are determined. These include:

* Biostatistics – Nearly all of Study of Public Health require use of biostatics for analysis of data to investigate the cause of disease and injuries and to identify health trends in the community. Students entering into a biostatistics program become competent in Master of Public Health Core curriculum and also their area of emphasis.
* Epidemiology – Epidemiology involves the understanding of causes and distribution of health in our community and in the general populations. As the basic foundation of public health research, epidemiology seeks reduction of risk factors to improve health by contributing to public health policy and research in fields such as medicine and pharmacy. Graduates with an MPH with a concentration in epidemiology are ready for employment as epidemiologists in federal, state and local public health agencies, private, government and academic research, healthcare organizations and in legal environments.
* Environmental Health – Nearly half of those employed as public health personnel and the public health fields are Environment Health Professionals. They study how environment and its risk factors impact our world and how the environment is related to issues such as disease, asthma, cancer and food poisoning. Often these students are already working in engineering, nursing, in biological or physical science areas, or as physicians or veterinarians. The MPH with concentration in Environmental health is a part of the Environmental and Global Health Department at the University of Florida and graduates of this program find careers in industry, research companies, academic institutions as well as county, federal and state division of health and environmental protection. Required coursework includes:

  • General toxicology
  • Human health risk assessment
  • Risk communication
  • Exposure assessment

* Public Health Management and Policy – Student are provided with a solid foundation in public health with a specialization in Health Management of Policy. This program prepares students for public health policy careers within the healthcare system including private, government or education areas. The program emphasizes the ability to apply the methods of program planning in public health environment. Upon graduation student will apply problem solving methods and crisis management and evaluate public health programs for effectiveness and quality.

* Public Health Practice – The Master of Public Health and Public health Practice concentration is often chosen by working professionals including physicians, nurses, social workers, and nutritionists who require a strong foundation to assume positions of leadership within public health. Students gain skills related to the administration and fiscal management need for programs addressing the health beliefs in a variety of cultures. Students are required to complete a five to eight credit internship for graduation of the program. The MPH with Public Health concentration is offered in both a forty-eight credit hour format as well as in an accelerated forty-two credit hour program.

* Social and Behavioral Sciences– The Master of Public Health and Social and Behavioral Sciences concentration is an overview of the social, cultural and behavioral issues as they relate to public health by analyzing public health problems and the influences of socio- cultural issues as they relate to health behavior. Upon completion of the program student will have a solid background of skills and knowledge to enhance the ability to work in field of public health to assist in developing culturally sound health promotion. The program deals with behavioral, social and cultural factors as they relate to individual and population health.

University of Miami

The School of Business Administration

Located in Coral Gables, The University of Miami (also known as U Miami) is a private nonsectarian university with a current enrollment of 15,613 students in 12 separate colleges, including a medical school, law schools, and school of oceanography and atmospheric science. The University of Miami Executive Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Health Sector Management and Policy Program requires the student to attend classes on three weekend days each month for twenty-three months and qualifies them to receive twenty-five American Medical Association PRA Category 1 credits. Students are prepared to pursue leadership positions in health care and health-related organizations. The focus of the program is the needs of professionals already employed in the health care industry, and those entering new careers in the field. The concentration of the Health Sector Management MBA program is on skills to expand student’s management and administration knowledge to the health care industry while also emphasizing the development of business, technical, administrative, and leadership concepts as they apply to the health care industry. Business Week ranks the University of Miami School of Business Administration Master’s Program in the top third tier. In 2007 the School of Business was ranked sixteenth best business school in the nation by The Wall Street Journal.

University of Miami

The Miller School of Medicine

Located in Coral Gables Florida, University of Miami (UM) is a private, non-sectarian university with a current enrollment of 15,613 students throughout twelve colleges. Located in the Miami Civic Center, the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine (UMMSM) is the graduate medical school of the University of Miami. The Medical Center includes three university owned hospitals that make up the University of Miami Health System. Jackson Memorial Hospital is one of the major teaching facilities and is also one of the largest hospitals in the United States with more than 1550 beds.

Master of Public Health

The Master of Public Health (MPH) is a graduate degree for those students whose career aspirations requires a general background in public health. The program focus is to attain competency in the public health fundamentals including research design and policy, communications, planning and administrative responsibilities in public health disciplines and ethical issues within public health. The Master of Public Health curriculum provides knowledge base for public health: biostatistics, epidemiology, environmental health science, health service administration and economics, and social sciences. The program prepares students to become leading public health professionals capable of addressing current global health problems through multidisciplinary approaches that apply the latest scientific knowledge.

To complete the program, each student will complete forty-five credits of coursework consisting of eighteen credits of core coursework, twenty-one elective credits and six credits for capstone experience. The length of completion is typically between one and two years.

Master of Science in Public Health

The Master of Science in Public Health a The Miller School of Medicine is an academic research degree program designed for students seeking future study in a doctoral degree program. The curriculum prepares graduates for research positions in the government, public industry, academic positions or private institutions. The curriculum is similar to the Master of Public Health Degree but includes emphasizes skills for research methods and quantitative analysis. To complete this program students will complete forty-five credits with twenty-seven credits of core curriculum, twelve in electives and six for capstone experience. Skills will include strength in conducting public health research in academic, government and private sectors of public health. On average the program takes two years for completion.

Located in Jacksonville Florida, The University of North Florida (UNF) is a member of the State University System of Florida. The Master of Health Administration (MHA) at Brooks College of Health prepares students for senior managerial and planning positions within the health services system. Goals for the program include developing graduates who are:

The fifty-four credit hour program allows an individual graduating with a Master of Health Administration Degree the ability to serve the Southeastern United States as effective administrators, managers and leaders in Healthcare. The program is offered in a full time or part time program to accommodate the educational needs of those already started in their career or are unable to attend full time. The students have exposure to some of the largest healthcare organizations including the Mayo Clinic, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida, Baptist Health, HCA Memorial and Saint Vincent’s Hospital with internships within these programs.

Master’s of Public Health with specialization in Health Promotion and Health Education Concentration

A Master’s of Public Health (MPH) is the most recognized degree for those who aspire to become leaders as Administrators in the Public Health System. This program prepares students with an understanding of how to manager, develop, plan and evaluate health promotion and disease prevention.
The curriculum for the Master’s of Public Health includes study in five areas of public health including:
• Health Behavior
• Biostatistics/Research

• Health Services Organization
• Environmental Health and the Health Promotion/Education specialization
